Position: Assistive Technology Specialist

Salary: $53,000+ based on experience + Benefits

Location: Anchorage, Alaska

AGENCY DESCRIPTIONAssistive Technology of Alaska (ATLA) is a not-for-profit organization that provides assistive technology solutions for Alaskans. ATLA is the designated entity and primary contractor for Alaska’s Federal Assistive Technology Act (Tech Act).

ATLA is located in Anchorage and is Alaska’s only assistive technology resource center providing demonstrations, assessments, training, and reselling of assistive technology. Staff conducts outreach activities, and provides grant and non-grant services and support throughout the state for people of all ages. ATLA staff are innovative and always creating new outreach opportunities and activities in order to expand Alaskan’s awareness and knowledge of assistive technology and enhance the quality of life for individuals with differing abilities.

POSITION OVERVIEWThe Assistive Technology Specialist, in conjunction with ATLA staff provides assistive technology services to clients and interested individuals through demonstrations, training, assessment, acquisition/sales and implementation of a variety of assistive technologies. This individual will assist with the planning and implementation of Alaska’s Tech Act grant and will provide both direct and indirect services and support via multiple modes of telecommunication.

DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES Serve as assistive technology specialist along with three (3) other specialists in

several of the following areas: computer access, cognitive supports, communication, deaf/hard-of-hearing, electronic aids to daily living (EADL/ECU), low-vision, and other areas.

Conduct quality demonstrations, workshops and trainings

Provide assessments, research, and recommendations for appropriate assistive technology

Work collaboratively with and maintaining effective relationships with ATLA staff

Provide collaborative leadership within the agency and with other Alaska organizations

Provide distance training and support using digital and multi-media / Web 2.0

Ongoing development and update of agency resources and website(s)

Active involvement with planning the Midnight Sun Assistive Technology

Conference

Participate in the sales of assistive technology

Maintain timely data collection

Assist with the development, implementation, and review of the Tech Act Grant

Travel both locally and statewide is required.

Perform other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Human Services, Education, Rehabilitation or related fields or within 6 months of finishing a degree.

RESNA ATP credential preferred but not required

Two (2) years of current experience working with individuals who have varying degrees of disabilities

Two (2) years of hands-on experience working with individuals who use assistive technology

Working knowledge of assistive technology principles and practices required

Advanced experience and knowledge in assessment and implementation of assistive technology

Experience working with current assistive technology software and devices in the areas of computer access, cognitive supports, communication, low-vision, deaf/hard of hearing, and environmental controls (electronic aids to daily living)

Experience with digital media, Web 2.0, etc.

Experience conducting high quality workshops and trainings for small and large

groups

Good oral and written communication skills

Ability and willingness to travel independently, including air travel to urban, rural and remote areas in Alaska

Effective verbal and written communication skills

Ability to work with minimal supervision

Good working knowledge of multiple computer systems, technologies and operating systems (Macintosh and Windows)

Good working knowledge of common software suites, e.g. Excel, Word, Power Point, as well as email and internet experience

Self directed - successfully complete projects and jobs with minimal supervision

MINIMAL ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Functional vision or demonstrated ability to perform job functions including: independently and safely locating and walking to destinations in remote villages where transportation services may not be available

Functional vision and hearing or demonstrated abilities to access the computer and other devices for assistive technology assessment, training and trouble shooting in all of the assistive technology areas.

Independent communication skills or demonstrated abilities to perform job functions

Physically able to do the following: lift and carry up to 50 pounds; grasp, pull, and reach; manual dexterity; and walking or independent mobility

Ability to travel independently, including automobile and air travel to urban, rural and remote areas in Alaska.
