Assistive Technology
Assistive technologies provide additional accessibility to individuals who have
physical or cognitive difficulties, impairments and disabilities.
Assistive Technology
International Standard ISO 9999 classification Aids for therapy and training Orthoses and prostheses Aids for personal care and protection Aids for personal mobility Aids for housekeeping Furnishings and adaptations to homes and other
premises Aids for handling products and goods Aids and equipment for environmental improvement,

Activity Monitoring
Gamze Uslu, Özgür Altun, H.Ibrahim Dursunoglu, Şebnem Baydere, Department of Computer Engineering
The monitoring system can detect
Simple actions (Lie, sit and stand)
Composite actions (Walk, stand-after-sit and sit-after-lie)
Emergency Monitoring Tool Using Mobile Phones
Ferda Özgür Uğur, Esin Onbaşıoğlu, Department of Computer Engineering
The tool can detect the following Actions Sends a message to the caregiver when the user is resting or
doing normal activities When the user shakes his phone, it sends a signal to the
caregiver to call him back If the user falls, it dials the number automatically to call the
caregiver

RehabRoby Robotic System for Rehabilitation
In this project, a robotic support system for the rehabilitation of upper-limb (RehabRoby) has been designed.
It has been analyzed, produced and tested.

Biomechanical Analysis of Sit-to-stand Motion Towards the Design of a
Mobility Assist Device
A motion-capture system was utilized for collecting the kinematic data, followed by image processing to obtain the coordinates of the markers.
These coordinates are then processed to obtain the kinematic variables that describe joint angular movements.
Static force and required power analyses are performed.
Results of this study indicate the feasibility of the assist device and form a basis for its design specifications.

An Interactive Virtual Environment for Rehabilitation of Children
A 3D monitor or projection system is used to create a virtual room where balls are thrown at the child
Speed, size and direction of the balls can be changed depending on the selected exercise type
A depth sensor detects if the child could catch the balls Performance of the child can be monitored

Wireless Sensor Network Based Smart Home for Disabled People
Intelligent Door Control System When the disabled person, who
cannot use his hands, comes home, the intelligent door control system notices and recognizes him, and then opens the door automatically.
Gas Detection System An alarming system when there is a
gas leakage
Warning Hearing Impaired People When somebody pushes the doorbell,
a small vibration motor enables human subject to be aware of the situation.
Haktan Işılak, Şebnem Baydere, Department of Computer Engineering
Helping Visually Disabled People at Public Transport Systems
At the bus stop, user speaks the
destination to his mobile phone.
Voice is recognized by the server.
When the bus arrives, the user is
notified.
When the bus reaches at the
destination, the user is notifed
again.Ismail Yavuz, Şebnem Baydere, Department of Computer Engineering
Computer-aided Nourishment System
Head-controlled robot arm for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients
3rd Prize winner at the 2011 EMO Project Contest
Tansel Bozkurt, Tacha Serif, Department of Computer Engineering
Turkish Sign Language Interpreter
Translates a text written in Turkish into Turkish Sign Language
Recognizes the signs with the help of a data glove and translates them into text.

Finger-based Mouse Navigation
A computer and a web camera is needed Green finger is the mouse cursor Click and double click operations are
activated according to the relative positions of the fingers and the distance between them

Gyroscope Enhanced Glove Mouse
A prototype Air Mouse system
Uses a gyroscope and MSP430 microcontroller
Barışcan Kayaoğlu, Sezer Gören Uğurdağ, Department of Computer Engineering
Keyboard and Mouse Control by Head Movements
A head-mounted and wireless accelerometer is used
Mouse cursor movement is controlled by user simply tilting his/her head in the desired direction.
Keyboard control is achieved by a customized on screen keyboard.
