Associate Headteacher’s welcome

Reminder

Students return to school:

Tuesday 30th October

It has been an excellent first half-term of this new year, and new chapter, of the Ealing Fields story.

For most schools building a whole new teaching block would be enough, but not for Ealing Fields!

Armed with our desire to ‘lead with courage and compassion’ the students have made a superb tran-

sition into their new year groups, including 120 brand new Year 7s. They have also taken the refresh

of the school uniform fully in their stride and look like the smartest school in Ealing (I think anyway).

We have welcomed a large new staff team who have added a lot of value to the school’s work, and

we held our biggest ever Open Day, and first one for two years on the school’s own site. We wel-

comed over 1,050 people, many of whom contacted me personally afterwards to praise the quality

of the students and staff for their welcome, energy and intelligence. I agree wholeheartedly.

It is with great delight that we can announce the approval of Planning Application for Place House

and this gives us a tremendous spring in our step (more on this on the second page). I would like to

formally thank all the parents for their support this half-term, but also for supporting the Ealing

Fields ‘project’ since its inception and I hope the news of the Place House approval brings you as

much joy as it has to the students and staff.

As ever, the half-term has been action-packed, from student councils to cross-country, from trips to

the Globe to the TV cameras visiting for our European Day of Languages, there hasn’t been a dull mo-

ment. I would like to congratulate and thank the students and staff for making such a positive start

to this year and for some strong outcomes in their Q1 exams. Read on to hear about all the other

highlights of the term and I look forward to welcoming you into school soon and at our Christmas

Concert later in the term.

With best wishes for a restful half-term break,

Mr Bedford

Place House approval

Last night the Planning Committee of Ealing Council, who exercise the council's functions as a local

planning authority, met to determine the planning application for the permanent site for Ealing

Fields High School.

We are delighted to announce that members voted unanimously to approve the planning applica-

tion for the new building and renovation of Place House and we look forward to receiving the for-

mal notification from the council very soon.

Three students representing Ealing Fields (Sheida Shaker, Samira Dalla and Zain Adam) welcomed

councillors and members of the public to the meeting at Ealing Town Hall with one staying in the

public gallery to the very end in order to see the vote.

Our planning consultant summed up his presentation to the committee with this heartfelt plea

from a Year 9 student. “We are really proud to be at Ealing Fields and have made the very best we

can of the temporary site where we have lived for the past three years – but we are longing to

have a real school building which will enable us to really excel.”

We are all thrilled this major milestone has been reached and the future is secure for our current

students, as well as those who are applying to join us next September.

We anticipate that work will be able to start on the new site after Christmas and thank all mem-

bers of the Ealing Fields community for their support during the planning application process.

We will, of course, keep you up-to-date with progress on the Place House building project as soon

as there are updates to share and look forward to this next exciting part of the journey with stu-

dents and parents.

Uniform

We are incredibly grateful for the effort made over the Summer by parents/carers getting students up

to speed with our uniform expectations however, It has been noted recently that a few students have

come into school wearing a small amount of coloured lip gloss / mascara / foundation. Just to be clear

on the school rules there is no make up allowed in school.

Any student found wearing makeup of any kind will receive negative conduct points and will also have their bags / lockers searched. Any makeup discovered will be confiscated for the remainder of the term and parents will be notified.

Below is a reminder of the current school uniform expectations.

Lead Students and Student Representatives

We are very excited to have elected our first

Lead Students at Ealing Fields this year. Along-

side the many student representative positions

in each form, all students in years 7-9 were giv-

en the opportunity to apply to be a Lead Stu-

dent for their year group.

The role will involve making speeches at key

school events, leading on the school’s Student

Council and being a role model for all students

at the school.

The standard of applications were very high and

we had a difficult job shortlisting six students in

each year to then write and perform a speech

to their whole year group in assembly. The stu-

dents outlined the qualities they thought were

important to being a Lead Student, reasons why

they want to become a Lead Student and the

ideas they have to make a positive impact on

Ealing Fields High School this year. All staff were

incredibly humbled by these students’ courage

and passion in delivering these speeches so

confidently in front of their peers and teachers.

All students were given a voting slip and were

allowed to vote for one girl and one boy candi-

date anonymously. The votes were counted

and we have now elected the following stu-

dents to be this year’s

Lead Students:

Year 7: Otto Strouts 7Y and Elicia Sterling

7B

Year 8: Danial Shabani 8B and Amelie Can-

niff 8P

Year 9: Nancy Kolawole 9B and Arti

Bachtiarov 9Y

Congratulations to all students who ap-

plied and took part in this process.

Brentford MFL Enrichment

At Ealing Fields; we were delighted that Brentford’s Yoann Barbet and Ser-

gi Canos were able to visit us as part of our European Day of Languages

celebrations. The event was on the 6.30pm BBC London News. It is exciting

for our Spanish and French students to see how language learning can re-

ally play an integral part in their futures. This is a delightful opportunity for

our students to embrace the big picture of how focus in MFL lessons is es-

sential for future progression. We wish Yoann and Sergi all the very best

for the future. As a school, we would like to collectively thank Helen

McCartan and everyone at the Brentford Community Trust for their hard

work in organising the event.

Ealing Fields Sport

Ealing fields has gotten off to a great start with sport this year. So far over half of the school

have competed in extra-curricular activities. These include football, netball, rugby, table ten-

nis and basketball where students of all abilities have enjoyed playing and competing in vari-

ous sports. As a PE department, we have been really impressed with the commitment and

determination of our students during after school activities.

As well as the after school sports, we have been delivering an interform competition of cross

county running where students compete in a 2KM run around the park to earn points for

their form. Over 80 different students have took part on one or more weeks and with two

weeks remaining we will share the results in the next newsletter. We are so proud of every-

one who has taken the ownership to represent their form.

Tennis

2018-19 is going to be an exciting year for tennis at Ealing Fields High School. EFHS is

a school of tennis school, where with the support of British tennis we can provide a

range of tennis opportunities to all students.

This year, EFHS have appointed 30 tennis ambassadors that will help promote and

facilitate a school and community wide tennis program. Students will have the oppor-

tunity to play tennis all year round, with tennis part of our already extensive extra-

curricular after school sport program.

An after school tennis club will commence next half term, every Monday from 4:10-

5:10pm. Once again, our very popular EFHS Wimbledon Tennis Championship will re-

turn, along with other inter-form and inter-school tennis competitions. If any stu-

dents would like to get involved in tennis at EFS, please talk to Mr Tootell.
