Jesus said to Nicodemus: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” John 3:14 The passage above is the first line from today's gospel reading (except at the 9:00 am Mass which has special readings for the RCIA). It will help us understand Jesus' words if we review what happened in the desert with Moses and the Israelites. [T]he people complained against God and Moses, “Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness, where there is no food or water? We are disgusted with this wretched food!” So the LORD sent among the people seraph serpents, which bit the people so that many of the Israelites died. Then the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned in complaining against the LORD and you. Pray to the LORD to take the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people, and the LORD said to Moses: Make a seraph and mount it on a pole, and everyone who has been bitten will look at it and re-cover. Accordingly Moses made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever the serpent bit someone, the person looked at the bronze serpent and recovered. Numbers 21:4-9 I'd like to make a couple of points. First, did you notice how the serpents only came upon the Israelites when they sinned by complaining against God and his servant? Second, did you also notice that looking upon the serpent, the consequence of their sins, they were saved? Third, did you notice that God did not immediately take the serpents away even after the Israelites repented? This is exactly analogous to what comes to pass in our spiritual lives when we sin. You see, when we sin we tell God we want nothing to do with him and this opens us up to all manner of negative conse-quences. One of which is a decreased appetite for spiritually holy things; this among the other, natural consequences of sin. For example, if one drinks too much alcohol, one gets a hangover. If one eats too much he or she doesn't sleep well and if habitual begins to adversely affect one's health. If one is un-faithful in marriage one can destroy his or her entire family. I think you get the point. These conse-quences of sin, and all sin has consequences, are the serpents that we invite into our lives. It is only through faith in Christ Jesus that we can find healing and pardon. Jesus Christ crucified is THE result of our sins. We put him on the cross by our wrong doing. But looking upon him with faith we are saved. Thankfully, after time living in the grace of God, even the consequences of sin can be taken away. The Israelites eventually got to a place where there were no more serpents. We can too by remaining faith-ful to the God who is love. The wrath of God is not in Him; it is in us. It is our possible experience of God if we are not ready to encounter Him. For example, if we are used to moral darkness, the glorious brightness of God’s holiness will seem harsh and unbearable to us. We might call this the “horror of God,” but the horror is in us not in Him. Similarly, if we are used to the coldness of this world of sin, the fiery warmth of God’s love will seem to us as a blazing, wrathful inferno. This is wrath: the com-plete incompatibility of two things. It is this way between sin and God’s utter holiness. We must be purified before we can enter the presence of God otherwise we could never tolerate His glory. We would wail and grind our teeth and turn away in horror. The wrath is the conflict between our sin and God’s holiness. God cannot and will not change so we must be changed, otherwise we experience wrath. Notice that the experience is primarily within us, not God. God does not change; He is holy and serene; He is love. If we experience His wrath it is on account of us, not Him. - Monsignor Charles Pope
