Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, "Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace." John 2: 13-16 Wow, those are some very powerful words and actions from Jesus in today's gospel (unless you are at the Mass for RCIA in which case you are hearing the story of the Women at the Well). Jesus was rightly angered when he saw how the money changers were bilking temple goers and worshipers (you had to exchange Roman money to pay for animals to sacrifice to God and to pay the temple tax since it had Caesar's image on it, which was considered a form of idolatry). He also was angered when he saw those who were selling animals because they weren't just asking for fair compensation, but were haggling over price. In fact, he was so angry he made a whip out of cords and drove them out! This incident helps us call to mind the need to clean out our temples too. I am speaking of the temple of the Holy Spirit which is us: body, mind, and soul. When Jesus tells us to pray what does he say? "Go to your inner room and pray to your Father in secret. And the Father who sees in secret will repay you." How cluttered is your inner room? Do you pray? When you pray is your mind filled with a million thoughts? What kind of thoughts? Needless to say, we all need spring cleaning so that our prayers are efficacious and fruit-ful. I hope these words from St. John Chrysostom will help you see the value of prayer above all else and inspire you to make the choices necessary to keep a clean and quiet temple. "Prayer is an all-efficient panoply [i.e. 'a full suit of armor' or 'splendid array'], a treasure undiminished, a mine never exhausted, a sky unobstructed by clouds, a haven unruffled by storm. It is the root, the fountain, and the mother of a thousand blessings. It exceeds a monarch's power... I speak not of the prayer which is cold and feeble and devoid of zeal. I speak of that which proceeds from a mind outstretched, the child of a contrite spirit, the offspring of a soul converted - this is the prayer which mounts to heaven... The power of prayer has subdued the strength of fire, bridled the rage of lions, silenced anarchy, extin-guished wars, appeased the elements, expelled demons, burst the chains of death, enlarged the gates of heaven, relieved diseases, averted frauds, rescued cities from de-struction, stayed the sun in its course, and arrested the progress of the thunderbolt. In sum prayer has power to destroy whatever is at enmity with the good." Is this your kind of prayer?
