ASSOCIATE PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

oday the Church celebrates the Baptism of the Lord. As the gospels relate, Jesus was bap-tized by John the Baptist in the Jordan river. Christ’s baptism was the beginning of His public ministry and took place when “he was about thirty years of age” (Lk 3:23).

The Baptism of the Lord is often seen in relation to the Sacrament of Baptism. Pope Fran-cis spoke about this in a homily given on the occasion of the Baptism of the Lord in 2014:

“Jesus did not need to be baptized, but the first theologians say that, with his body, with his divinity, in baptism he blessed all the waters, so that the waters would have the power to confer baptism. And then, before ascending to Heaven, Jesus told us to go into all the world to baptize. And from that day forward up until today, this has been an uninterrupted chain: they baptized

their children, and their children their own, and those children... And also today this chain continues.”

In his homily on the Feast of Baptism of the Lord in 2009, Pope Benedict XVI pointed that baptism unites us to Jesus:

“[B]y immersion in the waters of the Jordan, Jesus united himself with us. Baptism is, so to speak, the bridge he built between himself and us, the road on which he makes himself accessible to us. It is the divine rainbow over our lives, the promise of God's great ‘yes’, the door of hope and, at the same time, the sign that indicates to us the path to take actively and joyfully in order to encounter him and feel loved by him.”

Although the Sacrament of Baptism is seen in relation to Christ’s baptism, the two are quite different. St. John Paul II, referring to the Sacrament of Baptism, says:

“This Baptism frees man from original sin and forgives his sins, saves him from slavery to evil and is a sign of his rebirth in the Holy Spirit; it imparts to him a new life, which is participation in the life of God the Father, given to us by his Only-Begotten Son who became man, died and rose again.” (Homily of Sunday, 12 January 1997)

The rite of the Sacrament of Baptism incorporates many symbolic elements that convey how God works in the soul of a person being baptized. St. John Paul II explained them saying:

“They will be anointed with the oil of catechumens, the sign of Christ's gentle strength, given to them to fight against evil. Blessed water will be poured over them, an effective sign of interior purification through the gift of the Holy Spirit. They will then be anointed with chrism to show that they are thus consecrated in the image of Jesus, the Father's Anointed One. The candle lighted from the paschal candle is a symbol of the light of faith which their parents and godparents must continually safeguard and nourish with the life-giving grace of the Spirit.” (Homily of Sunday, 7 January 2001)

Cha". Đó là lời Chúa.

Mankato Serra Club THE LOVING ENVIRONMENT OF A FAMILY draws forth an indi-vidual ’s greatest talents and gifts. We ’ve come to real-ize that creating an atmosphere in which children can hear the Lord ’s call is one of the most significant re-sponsibilities resting on our shoulders as parents. Our own lives must reflect the presence of God, His Word, and the love He offers His people. Parents, do you en-courage your children to develop their talents and gifts? Do you encourage your children to think of Church ministry as a possible life choice? The Mankato Serra Club works to affirm and promote reli-gious vocations and meets on the 1st and 3rd Tues-day of every month for more information call 507.696.8119.

The Prepared

Environment/The Atrium

The atrium is one of the elements that helps the relationship between God and the child to flourish. After a theme has been presented, the child is

free to choose an activity that will make possible the in-ner dialogue with the “Interior Teacher.”

The atrium is a place of work which becomes a con-versation with God.

The atrium was the place in the early church where the catechumens were prepared. For the child, too, the atrium is a place of preparation for involvement in the larger worshiping community.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: 1 Sm 1:1-8; Sal 116 (115):12-19; Mc 1:1420 Martes: 1 Sm 1:9-20; 1 Sm 2:1, 4-8abcd; Mc 1:2128 Miércoles: 1 Sm 3:1-10, 19-20; Sal 40 (39):2, 5, 7-10; Mc 1:2939 Jueves: 1 Sm 4:1-11; Sal 44 (43):10-11, 14-15, 24-25; Mc 1:4045 Viernes: 1 Sm 8:4-7, 10-22a; Sal 89 (88):16-19; Mc 2:112 Sábado: 1 Sm 9:1-4, 17-19; 10:1a; Sal 21 (20):2-7; Mc 2:1317 Domingo: Is 62:1-5; Sal 96 (95):1-3, 7-10; 1 Cor 12:4-11; Jn 2:1-11
