These funds stay on the Horseshoe Bend peninsula. For information regarding this issue, please feel free to contact the Horseshoe Bend Special Road District at 573-365-2832 or by visiting their website at www.hbsrd.orgThe other issue pertains to continuing an existing vehicle sales tax within the Village of Four Seasons. Weekend Information for Pet OwnersWith the weather getting warmer, more people are walking their dogs or letting their dogs run in the yard. Here are a few things for pet owners to remember:
1. There is no animal control on Horseshoe Bend or Porto Cima.
2. We need to be respectful to neighbors and limit long periods of barking.
3. Please make sure your dog has a collar on with an ID tag.
4. Dog needs to be on a leash or in your yard.
Accidents do happen and dogs can easily get away from their owners. If the dog has an ID tag with a current phone number, our weekend Owners’ Services representative will be happy to call the owner if the dog is seen wandering unattended. If we all work together, we can keep our furry friends safe and happy!!
Volunteers NeededAD-HOC GARDENING COMMITTEEThe mission of this Ad-Hoc Committee will be to develop a plan for creating a community garden(s), utilizing existing POA common area land and soliciting resident involvement. The Committee will work to gather information about the interest for such a garden in the community; how much land might be necessary for such a garden; guidelines; rules and restrictions might be necessary for the usage of such a garden and a procedure for regulating the use by property owners.Volunteers interested in this Committee may also be interested in researching/gathering information to develop nature trails and or yard waste plans. Please contact Della Miller at [email protected] or at 573-552-8334 if you are interested in serving on this committee.

Springtime Driving ConcernsSubmitted by Cpl. Shawn KobelSpring has sprung here at the Lake of the Ozarks and that means that there will be more people driving our roads. Many think that with winter behind us, road conditions will be safer. This is true to an extent as most of the snow and ice is done for the year, but there are still hazards to be aware of. Winter time is harsh on asphalt roadways. Cold temperatures cause asphalt to constrict and this causes cracks. While asphalt is actually designed to constrict, it can only take so much especially as it ages. Moisture will enter these cracks and cause the cracks to widen and weaken the support structure of the asphalt. De-icing chemicals and even something as innocent as sand spread for traction can enter these cracks and further damage the asphalt. Heavy vehicles, along with snow plow trucks, can and do break sections of the weakened asphalt to create dangerous and damaging potholes. Although we have had a fairly mild winter here at the lake, damaged sections of the roadway and potholes are something to watch out for when you are driving. Spring rains are also a concern for driving as the roads become slippery, not to mention the possibility of flooding. According to the Federal Highway Administration, rain was responsible for 46 percent of all weather-related crashes from 2005-2014. Wet pavement was responsible for 73 percent of these crashes. Rain and wet pavement reduce your vehicle’s handling abilities and wet conditions require increased stopping distance. Many people reduce their speed in snow and ice, but fail to realize that hydroplaning as a result of standing water is just as dangerous as a layer of ice on the road. If you encounter a flooded area of road while driving, it is recommended to find an alternate route to your destination if possible. It is extremely difficult for a driver to gauge how deep the water is and if the water has a strong current that might push your vehicle. Gravel roads are even more dangerous as it is impossible to tell how much of the roadway has been washed out under the flooded area. Other hazards to be aware of while driving this spring are increased animal and human traffic. Wildlife is extremely active in the spring since it is mating season for many types of animals. Many will be trying to cross the roadways that you are using as their biological urges may overpower their natural shyness of busy roadways. Humans also become more active as walkers, joggers, and cyclists become rejuvenated by the warm temperatures and hit the roads. They may not dart out into the roadway like wildlife will (well, most of the time), but they will be running the shoulders, crosswalks, and sidewalks of the roads you are traveling on.As long as motorists use common sense and drive in a defensive manner this spring, everyone should be much safer on our roadways. The Camden County Sheriff ’s Office hopes that you will keep these suggestions in mind while you are driving throughout our beautiful community so that you will be prepared to handle any springtime hazards that you might face.
Spring Rains and Your Wastewater SystemSpring is finally upon us and while we all welcome the warmer temperatures, we must also be aware of the rainy weather that usually accompanies and the effect it can have on your wastewater treatment system. It is with this in mind that we would like to stress the importance of keeping the lids to your wastewater treatment system exposed and accessible. If the lid or lids to your system (depending on the type you have) are not exposed, then the run-off caused by heavy rains can enter the system. What this means for homes with grinder pump systems is that the pump may have to run more frequently as the run-off enters the tank, possibly shortening the life of the motor. For homes with on-site treatment systems this means the drain field may become saturated more quickly as run-off enters the tank, increasing the load on the system and possibly causing the drain field to fail. Both of these situations can result in costly repair bills. To avoid these problems, we recommend that lids be exposed at least 6 inches from the top of the lid on grinder pump systems and at least 6 inches from the bottom edge of the concrete lids for on-site systems. If you have any questions about this subject or about your wastewater treatment system in general, please call the Wastewater Department at (573) 552-8334.
