Dur ing the last twenty year6, the nainachievements of San Lazzaro include: a ) the f i rst volume of theArmenian Miniature Paint ings, 1966; b) Armeniaca. Mélangesd'Etudes Arménienneg , 1969 ; c ) the foundat ion ln 197 1 of twoser ies: Bibl iothèque d'Arménologie "Bazmavep" and Textua etStudia; d) an intensive summer course of Armenian language andcul ture s ince 1985.

Almost s imultaneouely two groupg of l ta l ian scholars havedeveloped a strong interest in Armenian archi tecture. One group9ra6 led by Prof . A . Alpago-Novel lo and the Polytechnics ofMi lan; the other wa6 in i t ia l ly led by Prof . Géza de FrancovLchof the Universi ty of Rome.

In June of 1968 the f i rst exhibi t ion of l {edieval ArmenLanArchi tecture took place in Rome at Palazzo Venezia. A largecatalogue eraa publ ished on this oceasion. Subsequent ly the Romegroup publ ished a number of monographs on ear ly ArmenLanarchi tecture.

The group of Mi lan also has two publ ieat ions ser ies: a)Documents of Armenian Archi tecture in three languageg ( I ta l ian,Engl ieh, Armenian) ( 15 volunes ) ; b) Ricerca di Archi tet turaArmena (24 volumes ) .

In June of 1975, the f i rst fnternat ional SympoeLum onArmenian Art took place at the " fBt i tuto Universi tarLo" ofBergamo ( proceedings edi ted by G . IENI and B. L . ZEKIYAN, Venice,1978 ) .

In February of the fol lowing year, the foundat ion of the"Centro di Studi e Document,azione del la Cultura Arnena diFi i lano" wa6 off lc ia l ly announced, under the leaderehip of Prof .A. Alpago-Novel lo and the part ie ipat ion of Fr. B.L. Zekiyan, Dr.G . feni and Prof . G. Uluhogian. This center organized the thi rdSymposiumm on Armenl-an Art, T{hich took place in the autumn of1981 in Mi lan and Vicenza (proceedings edi ted by G. IENI and G.I ILUHOGIAN, Venice, 1981) .

At the present Armenian language and l iterature are taughtof f ic ia l ly in two I ta l ian Universi t ies: Bologna ( s ince t97 4Prof, G. Uluhogian ) and Venezia ( s ince 1976 Prof . B. L.Zekiyan ) . Special interest in Armenian is cul t lvated by twochairs of Indo-European l inguiet ics, that of Prof . G. Bolognesi( Universi ta Cattol ica de1 Sacro Cuore of Mi lan ) and Prof . R.Ajel l1o (Unlversi ty of Piea). A lectureship in Armenian languageattached to the chaLr of Slavist ic Studies at the StateUniversi ty of Mi lan was establ ished in 1981 (Dr. B. Sivazl iyan ) .

A conference on the toplc "Armenia between Eaet and We6t"was organi aed in Mai 1978 on the in i t iat ive of the Armenl,anchair of Venice. The Inst i tute of f ranian and Caucasian Studlesof Venice organL zed in 1979 a conference on the Cultures of theTranscaucaËian area whlch took place in Mi lan and Venice.

The chair of Arnenl-an studies and of Hlstory of theRel ig ions of the l l iddle East, in eol laborat ion wi th the ArmenianCenter of Mi lan and the Acadeny of San Lazzaro, organized in
