I will be teaching Holiday traditions to 4th graders. There are 20 students 11 girls, and 9
boys. There are 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish and 2 African Americans. The children will be able to
present the four main holidays that I will describe to them with 90% accuracy. I will show and
describe the 4 main holidays that go along with the three main religions of the world and also
other beliefs and religions that go along with the 4th holiday.
To show the children I will get different aspects and symbols of each holidays. Each
aspect or symbol will either be the actual object or a handmade object that I created. For
example, I will show the children for Christmas; a small Christmas tree, a toy manger, and
wrapped presents. For Hanukkah I will show the children a Menorah, presents and the star of
David. For Ramadan, I will show the children a sign that symbolizes fasting (and explain what
fasting means), the star and moon symbol that is also prevalent during this holiday. For Kwanza I
will show and explain to the students a Kinara (candle holder), corn and presents. Foe every
holiday I will include a small video showing how the holiday is celebrated for the children to be
able to see and hear what goes on during the holiday.
After I have shown and described all of the holidays to the children I will then have them
tell me what holidays they celebrate and how they celebrate it. Then I will put them in groups
according to their holidays that they celebrate, then have them teach the class about a new
holiday that they do not celebrate and present the holiday it to the class. The children can make
their own symbols of the holiday with picture or craft the actual object. The explanations of the
holidays and videos will take 4 days. The class discussion about their own holidays will take one
whole class period and finally their projects and presentations should take 3 days to make and
present. So in total this lesson will take a week and a half to complete.
