COMPLETE HEAT AND CONTROL SOLUTIONS

SensorThe device that measures the temperature of theheated medium and sends the temperature signalto the temperature controller. It is usually indirect contact with the heated medium and mustbe specified to handle the temperature and condi-tions of the application. Thermocouple sensorsmade of two dissimilar metal wires are the mostwidely used in commercial foodservice equipment. The RTD (resistance temperature detector), whoseresistance changes with changes in temperature,is more accurate and performs better at ambienttemperatures than the thermocouple. IT (infrared)sensors are contact sensors that use infraredenergy to measure temperature. IR sensors areexcellent for applications where it is difficult toprovide direct contact with the heated medium.Other sensors used in commercial foodserviceequipment include calcium deposit sensors, level sensors, and overtemperature sensors.

Temperature ControllerTakes the temperature from the sensor, compares it to a setpoint, and adjusts theoutput to the power controller to maintainthe desired temperature. Temperature con-trols are the intelligent decision-makingelement of the controlloop, and decide how much heat is needed to maintain the correct temperature using on/off, proportional,or PID control methods.

HeaterThe device that applies heat to the process or product. For commercial foodservice equipment these can be immersion heaters, component heaters, flexible and thick film heaters,or defrost heaters. The amount of heat is switched on and off by the power controller.

FLEXIBLE AND THICK FILM HEATERS

These low-profile heaters

are ideal for use in

applications where space is

at a premium. They can be

configured and applied

to virtually any flat,

two-dimensional geometric

shape and conform to any

curved surface, concave

or convex. They can be

designed to fit around

obstacles such as notches,

posts, and mounting holes

and brackets. And because

they apply heat by direct

surface contact, Chromalox

flexible and thick film

heaters provide

optimum heat transfer.

FLEXIBLE AND THICK FILM HEATERS

Silicone Laminate Flexible HeatersChromalox silicone laminate flexible heaters are suited for low- to medium-temperature applications. They are ruggedly constructed bylaminating wire or etched-foil heating circuits between plies of silicone rubber insulating material for flexibility and strength.Terminal connections are made internally at any point on the surface of the heater or projected from any edge withinternal or mounted strain reliefs used to help ensure durability.A wide range of mounted or free-standing thermostats, thermo-couples, RTS, thermal fuses, and thermistors is available for control. These heaters can be mounted using adhesives, vulcanized bonding; eyelets, mounting bars, hooks, springs or spring clasps, and pre-formed clasps.• Maximum temperature: 390ºF

• Voltage: up to 600 V

Thick Film HeatersChromalox thick film heaters can be used for applications where desired temperatures are higher than can be achieved with flexible silicone laminate heaters. They are designed to provide relentless, dependable, and round-the-clock service week-in and week-out for years. Thick film heaters are constructed of a substrate, a base dielectric material, and a resistor. A variety of substrate materials may be used. Termination points are fused directly to the resistor circuit for strong,trouble-free connections. Thick film heaters are corrosion-resistant, contributing to their long service life.

Thermal profiles can be maintained to within ±1ºF and are distinguished by fast thermal response for excellent operating efficiency. By varying the density of the heater circuit, thick film heaters can be designed to vary heat output across the surface.

• Operating temperatures up to 932ºF

• Watt Densities: up to 500 W/in.

Self-Regulating, Low-Temperature Heating CableChromalox self-regulating, low-temperature heating cable is ideal for defrost applications because it is energy efficient and safe. It is energy efficient because it uses less energy when less heat is required. It issafe because overtemperature conditions are minimized and its polymer sheathing is moisture- and wear-resistant. Twin 16 AWG copper buss wires embedded in a semiconductive polymer core matrix provide reliable electrical current. The semiconductive polymer core matrix is the “self-regulating” componentof the cable. Its electrical resistance varies with temperature. At low temperatures, the core’s heat output increases; as the application’s temperature rises, the heat output decreases.

• Maximum temperature: 150ºF

• Maximum circuit length: 660 ft.

• Output: 3, 5, 8, and 10 W/ft.

• Voltages: 120 and 208-277 V

• Approximate size: 3/8 in. W x 1/8 in. H

• Minimum bend radius: 11/4 in.
