Back-UPS350/500Users Manual990-20852/01Installation2Connect EquipmentTherearpaneloftheBack-UPSconsistsofthefollowing elements:BatteryBackUpOutlets(qty.of3).Theseoutletsprovidebatteryback-up,surgeprotection,and Electro-magnetic Interference (EMI) filtering.Incaseofpoweroutage,batterypowerisautomaticallyprovidedtotheseoutlets.Power(utilityorbattery)isnotsuppliedtotheseoutletswhentheBack-UPSisswitchedOff.Connectacomputer, monitor, and external disk or CD-ROMdrive to these outlets.SurgeOnlyOutlet.ThisoutletisalwaysOn(whenutilitypowerisavailable)andisnotcontrolled by the On/Off switch. This outlet doesnot provide power during a power outage. Connecta printer, fax machine or scanner to this outlet.Note: Allow the Back-UPS to charge for a full eighthours prior to use.Press the push-button on the front panel of the Back-UPS.Observethatthefollowingeventsoccurafterpressing and releasing the push-button: The green On-Line indicator flashes. TheyellowOnBatteryindicatorlightswhilethe Self-Test is being performed. WhenSelf-Testhassuccessfullycompleted,only the green On Line indicator will be lit. If the internal battery is not connected, (see Step1above)thegreenOnLineindicatorandredReplace Battery indicator will light. Connect the USB cableend(USBsymbolfacingdown)totherearpanelUSB port of the Back-UPS. Connect the other endof the USB cable to the USB port (usually locatedon the rear panel of the computer).Windows 98 and Windows Me UsersTheAPCPowerManagementExtensionssoftwarehasbeendesignedspecificallytoworkwithWindows98buildnumber4.10.1998,Windows98SE(SecondEdition)4.10.2222A,and Windows Me (Millennium Edition).Toascertainthebuildnumber,gototheControlPanel,opentheSystemdialogandviewtheSysteminformationundertheGeneraltabofthedialog.Toinstallthesoftware,performthefollowing steps:1. Pleaseskiptostep4ifrunningWindowsMe.ForWindows98,afterconnectingtheUSBcable, the Add New Hardware Wizard dialogbox is displayed. Insert a Windows 98 operatingsystemCDintothecomputerCD-ROMdrivebefore proceeding.2. Followtheinstallationinstructionsonthecomputer screen.Duringinstallation,Windowswillneedtosearchfornewdrivers.Whenprompted,makesure the CD-ROM drive box is checked.There are four status indicators (lights) on the frontpaneloftheBack-UPS(OnLine,OnBattery,Overload, and Replace Battery).On Line (green) - is lit whenever utilitypowerispoweringtheBatteryBackupoutlets.ON LINEON BATTERYOVERLOADREPLACE BATTERYOnBattery(yellow)-islitwheneverthebatteryoftheBack-UPSispoweringequipmentconnectedtotheBatteryBackup Outlets.Four Beeps Every 30 Seconds - thisalarm is sounded whenever the Back-UPS is running OnBattery.Considersaving work in progress.ContinuousBeeping-thisalarmissoundedwheneveralowbatteryconditionisreached. Battery run-timeisverylow.Promptlysaveanyworkinprogressandexitallopenapplications.Shutdowntheoperatingsystem, computer and the Back-UPS.Overload(red)-islitwheneverpower demand has exceeded the capac-ity of the Back-UPS.ContinuousTone-thisalarmissounded whenever the Battery Backupoutlets are overloaded.CircuitBreaker-thecircuitbreaker button located on the rearpaneloftheBack-UPSwillstickout if an overload condition forcesthe Back-UPS to disconnect itselffromutilitypower.Ifthebuttonsticksout,disconnectnon-essentialequipment.Resetthecircuitbreakerbypushingthebutton inward.Status Indicators and Alarms1Placement / Power3Connect the PhoneLine to Surge ProtectionAvoid placing the Back-UPS in: Direct sunlight Excessive heat Excessivehumidityorincontactwithfluidsof any typePlug the Back-UPS into a wall outlet, as shown. TheBack-UPSchargestheinternalbatteryany time it is connected to a wall outlet.Your computers power cord.Thetelephoneportsprovidelightningsurgeprotection for any deviceconnected tothetelephoneline(computer,modem,faxortelephone).Thetelephone ports are compatible with Home PhonelineNetworkingAlliance(HPNA)andDigitalSuscriberLine(DSL)standards,aswellasallmodemdatarates. Connect as shown.Wall OutletModem/Phone/FaxMac OS 9 (9.0.4 or higher) UsersAPC Shutdown Manager software has been designedspecifically to work with Mac OS 9 (9.0.4 or higher,except OS X). There are builds of the Mac OS prior toMacOS9.0.4withpowerdriversthathaveknownproblems. Ensure thatthe most up to date version ofMac OS 9 (9.0.4 or higher) is installed on the system.InserttheAPCInstallationCD-ROMwiththeAPCShutdown Manager software into the CD-ROM drive.AniconcalledAPCShutdownManagerv1.0willappear on the computer desktop. Open the folder anddouble-clicktheReadMefile.Ensurethatthecomputers hardware matches the requirements statedin the ReadMe file. Double-click on APC ShutdownManagerv1.0tobegintheinstallationofthesoftware.Atthefirstdialog,clickonContinue.ReadthedisplayedlicenseagreementandclickAccepttoagreetotheterms.ClickonInstalltobegin. After installation, click on the Restart dialogbutton to restart the computer.All Other UsersThesoftwareisdesignedfortheWindowsandMacintoshoperatingsystemsmentionedinthissection.Ifoneoftheseoperatingsystemsisnotinstalledonthecomputer,theBack-UPSwillstillprovide these primary features: Batterybackup,surgeprotection,andtelephoneline protectiontoprotect theentiredesktop fromlightning and power surges. Runtimeneededtoworkthroughbriefpowerdisturbances.Thisallowstimetomanuallysavedata and shut down safely. ThedisabledfeaturesincludeUnattendedAutomaticOperatingSystemShutdownandApplicationDataSaving.ReplaceBattery(red)-islitwhen-ever the battery is near the end of its use-ful life, or if the battery is not connected(seeabove).Abatterythatisneartheend of its useful life has insufficient run-time and should be replaced.Chirps for 1 Minute Every 5 Hours -thisalarmissoundedwheneverthebatteryhasfailedtheautomaticdiagnostic test.3. Afterinstallationofthedriversiscomplete,aWindows98CD-ROMdialogboxmayappear.If this happens, just close the box.4. InserttheAPCInstallationCD-ROMintothecomputersdrive.Thesoftwareuserdocumentationisafileonthemainfolderofthe CD. The filename is Users Guide.pdf.5. Followtheinstallationinstructionsonthecomputer screen.Ifthesoftwaredoesnotautomaticallyinstall,theWindowsautorunfeaturemayhavebeendisabled.Inthiscase:ChooseStartinthetaskbarandthentheRunoption.Typethefollowing: :\setup.exe.Click OK.6. After the installation is complete, the APC plugicon will appear in the taskbar (near the clock).To view the Power Management user interface,double-clickontheAPCplugtaskbariconor,alternatively,choose:Start>Settings>Control Panel > Power Management.Note: Windows 98 and Windows Me categorize aUPSasanHID(HumanInterfaceDevice).TheBack-UPS is listed in: Control Panel > System >DeviceManager>HIDcategory>HIDCompliant Device.Windows 2000 UsersTheCD-ROMincludedwiththispackagecontainsawizardthatoptimizesacomputersystemspowersettingsforoperationwiththeBack-UPS.ItdoesthisbychangingvarioussettingsinPowerOptionsPropertiesintheControlPanel.APCstronglyadvisesthatthecomputersystembereconfiguredby running thiswizard.1. InserttheAPCPowerManagementCD-ROMinto the computers drive.2. ChooseStartandthentheRunoption.Type::\setup.exe.CSto the Back-UPS4Switch on theBack-UPSReplace the Internal BatteryTo replace the internal battery, proceed as follows: Note:Replacingthebatteryisasafeprocedure.However,smallsparksmayoccurduring the process. This is normal.Slide the new battery into the battery compartment.2Pull the battery out, exposing the battery terminalsand wires. Disconnect the wires from the terminals.Place the unit on its side. Slide the batterycompartment cover upward and off of the UPS.13 4Align the battery compartment cover with the groovesConnect the battery wires to the terminals as follows: in the UPS. Typically, eight hours of charging time areneededtofullychargethebatteryfromtotaldischarge.Back-UPSrun-time is reduced until the battery is fully charged.Replace battery (see Order Replacement Battery). Batteries typicallylast3-6years,shorterifsubjectedtofrequentpoweroutagesorele-vated temperatures.A red indicator is litBattery is not connected properly.TheOverloadindicatorislitifequipment connected to the BatteryBackupoutletsisdrawingmorepowerthan the Back-UPScanpro-vide.Battery requires replacement.Checkthebatteryconnections.Consult"ConnecttheBattery"under"Installation"onthefrontpageofthisdocument.Itshowshowtoaccess the battery and connect the wires.Move one or more equipment power plugs to the Surge Only outlets.Thebatteryshouldbereplacedwithintwoweeks(see"OrderReplacementBattery").Failuretoreplacethebatterywillresultinreduced run-time during a power outage.ConnecttheBack-UPStoanotherwalloutletorhaveaqualifiedelectrician check the building wiring.Red indicators are flashingBack-UPS failure. Call APC for service. Service1. Consult the Troubleshooting section to eliminate common problems.2. Determine if the circuit breaker is tripped. If the circuit breaker is tripped, reset the breaker and determine if the problem still exists.3. If the problem persists, consult the APC Worldwide Web site (www.apcc.com) or call customer service. Recordthe model number of the UPS, the serial number, and the date purchased. Be preparedto troubleshoot the problem over the telephone with a technician.If this is not successful, the technician will issue a Return Merchandise Authorization Number (RMA#) and a shipping address. If the UPS is under warranty, repairs are free. If not, there is a repair charge.4. Pack the UPS in its original packaging. If the original packing is not available, ask customer ser-vice about obtaining a new set. Pack the UPS properly to avoid damage in transit.5. Write the RMA# on the outside of the package.6. Return the UPS by insured, prepaid carrier to the address provided by customer service.Note: If the UPS requires service, do not return it to the dealer. Damage sustained in transit is not covered under warranty (insuring the package for full value is recommended).WarrantyThe standard warranty is two (2) years from the date of purchase. APCs standard procedure is to replacethe original unit with a factory reconditioned unit. To adjust the transfer voltage, proceed as follows:1. PlugtheBack-UPSintotheutilitypowersource.TheBack-UPSwillbeinaStandbyMode(noindicators lit).2.
