Question: Does ASTM A123 apply to bolts and fasteners as a galvanizing specification?

Answer: ASTM A123 does not  cover threaded bolts and fasteners. ASTM A153 and 232! are the ASTM

specifications that cover the re"#ire$ents for hot%dip zinc coating of fasteners.

ASTM A123

This specification covers the re"#ire$ents for hot%dip galvanizing on iron and steel prod#cts $ade fro$ rolled

pressed and forged shapes& castings& plates& bars& and strips. 't does not  cover threaded fasteners that are

centrif#ged or other(ise handled to re$ove e)cess zinc.

ASTM A13

This ASTM specification covers zinc coatings applied by the hot%dip process on iron and steel hard(are. This

specification is intended to be applied to hard(are ite$s that are centrif#ged or other(ise handled to re$ove

e)cess zinc. A153 is applicable to steel hard(are ite$s of *lasses A& +& *& and D.

The standard specification that covers the re"#ire$ents for hot%dip zinc coating applied to carbon steel and alloy

steel bolts& scre(s& (ashers& n#ts& and special threaded fasteners applied by the hot%dip coating process. ails

and rivets are not  incl#ded in 232!. 't is intended to be applicable to fasteners that are centrif#ged or other(ise

handled to re$ove e)cess zinc.

ASTM #232 vs. ASTM A13
