The DBS was developed as the ultimateexpression o Aston Martins engineering andtechnical ability. The need or high-perormancestability, handling ability and low kerb weightdefned the cars orm and construction. TheDBS is the frst production Aston Martin tomake extensive use o ultra-light carbon-fbrebody panels. Its high levels o perormanceand control are delivered by the combinationo inherent light weight, near-perect weightdistribution, a supremely powerul and exibleV12 engine, and a perormance-honed six-speed transmission, together with new carbonceramic brakes and an adaptive damper-controlled suspension system.

The 6.0-litre V12 engine is the heart o the DBS.The DBR9 and DBRS9 race cars are poweredby an enhanced version o this same V12,tuned to produce in excess o 600 bhp. Theshared powerplant continues the strong linkbetween Aston Martins road and race cars, just as the six-cylinder powerplant used in theDBR1 also powered the DB4, DB5 and DB6

    in the 1950s and 60s.

Like all current Aston Martin powerplants, theengine is hand-assembled at Aston Martinsdedicated engine acility in Cologne, Germany. The classic 6.0-litre V12 eatures a number opower-increasing enhancements. These includea by-pass engine air intake port that opensabove 5500 rpm to allow more air into theengine, and re-profled air inlet ports that urtherimprove airow into the combustion chamber.Combined with a compression ratio o 10.9:1,the result o these enhancements is prodigiouspower and torque: the DBS delivers 380 kW(510 bhp/517 PS) at 6500 rpm.

The short fnal-drive ratio ensures that theadditional power is usable, enhancing in-gearacceleration in particular.

A true sports car has to be light and wellbalanced. A lightweight, rigid structure is thedesign engineers ultimate goal, and achievithe right balance between strength and mascrucial. Like the DB9 and its sibling DBR9 aDBRS9 race cars, the DBS uses Aston Martclass-leading all-alloy VH (Vertical Horizontaarchitecture, a lightweight bonded aluminiumstructure that provides outstanding strengthand rigidity. Aston Martins engineers have aemployed advanced materials and processeto urther reduce weight and increase theDBSs perormance and dynamics.

A key eature is the extensive use o carbonfbre body panels, as in the DBR race cars.In the case o the DBS, carbon-fbre panelsare used or the boot enclosure, boot lid, doopening surrounds, ront wings and bonnetgiving a saving o some 30 kg over moreconventional materials without any reductionin strength. There are no restrictions on oror shape in using carbon-fbre, says MarekReichman, Aston Martins Design Director,

and the material allowed us to wrap bodywaround the 20 wheels and maintain theprecise relationship between the wheel andthe bodywork. Each panel has been careusculpted to direct the airow around the carinto the engine and to help cool the brakingsystem; the DBS bodywork is a harmoniouscomposition o owing, muscular orms. Thecarbon-fbre elements are produced usingadvanced manuacturing techniques develorom the aerospace and motorsport industr

The new panel-making procedure also delivan industry-best surace fnish, thanks to apatented Surace Veil process. The applicao a 200-micron layer o epoxy and glass tothe panel delivers a class-A surace that is inline with Aston Martins tradition o high-quafnishes. Inside the car, the weave patternson the exposed carbon-fbre elements havebeen careully selected to present the mostharmonious suraces.

Light weight, and the distribution o thatweight, is essential to the dynamics o anysports car, aecting almost every aspect oits perormance. As with the DB9 and DBRrace cars, the Aston Martin DBS benefts romthe inherent characteristics o the VH platormarchitecture. The VH underrame consistso pressed, extruded and cast aluminiumcomponents, bonded together to createan immensely strong underlying structure, while the DBSs external body panels aremanuactured rom lightweight carbon-fbre,composite and aluminium.

This structure means that weight is kept to aminimum, with the ront mid-mounted engineand rear mid-mounted transaxle ensuring anear-perect weight distribution: 85 per cento the cars weight is positioned within itswheelbase. The DBSs polar moment o inertiais thereore very low, producing a car withnatural agility, a strong, stable platorm or theV12s high power output and an exhilaratingdriving experience.

In order to take ull advantage o its extremelyprecise and rigid platorm, the DBS employsa new and sophisticated Adaptive DampingSystem (ADS) which uses two separate valvesto set the dampers to fve dierent positions, allowing instant adjustment o the cars ride andhandling characteristics. The Adaptive DampingSystem automatically alters the suspensionsettings to ensure the driver has high levels ocontrol at all times, with the ability to respondinstantly to dierent driving conditions. Thedampers can be soter, with a correspondingimprovement in ride quality, or frm, providingimproved body control or more spirited driving.

The damper settings are determined by anelectronic control unit which takes sensorreadings rom the cars systems, includingthrottle position, brake position, steeringwheel rotation and vehicle speed. This dataestablishes the prevailing driving conditions andthe demands the driver is making on the car.

The DBSs Adaptive Damping System perecaptures the cars sporting character, ensurthat stier dampers are available or betterhandling and control when the car is beingdriven enthusiastically, without compromisinride comort during normal driving conditioA designated Track mode automatically setsall dampers to their frmest positions, makinit ideal or circuit driving. The DBS is ftted wPirelli P-Zero tyres that have been developedespecially or the car, along with new 20lightweight alloy wheels.

The DBS has a revised Dynamic StabilityControl (DSC) system, designed to helpmaintain maximum traction in challengingdriving conditions. In deault operation, theDSC is automatically on. Select and pressthe button or two seconds and DSC Trackmode is engaged, raising the threshold atwhich the system intervenes to allow theexperienced driver to explore the cars limitsHold the button or our seconds and DSCis disengaged entirely.

The cars braking system eatures anotherinnovation, the frst time Carbon Ceramic M(CCM) brakes have been used on a road-goAston Martin. The DBSs carbon ceramic brsystem consists o 398 mm diameter ventiladiscs with six-piston alloy monobloc calipersat the ront and 360 mm diameter ventilateddiscs with our-piston alloy monobloc calipeat the rear. The end result is shorter stoppindistances with excellent resistance to ade ieven the most demanding driving conditionsCCM brakes are also some 12.5 kg lighterthan a conventional system, reducing theweight o the car overall and, in particular, thunsprung weight and rotational masses, urenhancing the perormance o the suspensi

The DBS is manuactured using the fnestmaterials, with a combination o hand-fnishingand pioneering high-technology processes. From the exceptional quality o the design andfnish to the advanced production techniquesemployed to save weight and create strength, the DBS is both a technological masterpieceand a powerul visual and tactile experience, inside and out.

The DBS is the culmination o the DB bloodline,a synthesis o race-bred technology androad-going practicality that can be traced backto the iconic DB2, DB3S a nd DB4GT, and iscontinued today with the DBR9 and DBRS9race cars. The DBSs powerul, owing ormuses the visual language o the DBR9 GT1race car with the innate elegance o the DBseries. Lower and tauter than other Aston Martinproduction models, the DBS has subtly aredwheel arches accommodating standard20 diameter wheels and tyres. These provideexcellent stability and grip, while giving the cara muscular and athletic stance that evokes

the DBR9 and DBRS9. The design processinvolved continuous revision and honing o theDBSs suraces, ensuring that the shapes andorms represent perectly the cars inherentpower, while never diluting the undamentalproportions that are the essence o everyAston Martin.

The external detailing reects the power anddynamic abilities o the DBS, with revised inletsand enlarged grilles that deliver more air intothe engine and increase its cooling capacity.Subtle design details include a new fve-bardesign or the polished alloy main grille, aswell as two additional vents in the enlargedpower bulge on the carbon-fbre bonnet. These vents are entirely unctional, improvingengine perormance and efciency, yet alsocommunicating the increased power outputo the uprated V12 engine.

The DBSs aerodynamic enhancements areshaped by Aston Martins racing experienceA carbon-fbre splitter and a new ront bumpdesign help channel airow around the carswider bodywork. The aerodynamics teamworked hand in hand with the modelling teato ensure that the orms and suraces o theDBS were sculpted or inherent stability athigh speeds.

The widened ront and rear track improvehandling and give the car a more muscularcharacter. To accommodate this additionalwidth, the suraces o the wings have beensculpted and re-shaped with harder lines, which also serve to emphasise the carsstrength and power. The lowered ride heighis accentuated by the enhanced side sills, careully profled to improve aerodynamicperormance and reduce drag along the anThe iconic Aston Martin side strake, a desigeature o every DB car since the DB4, hasbeen redesigned or the DBS, incorporatinga side repeater ormed by a bank o LEDs.
