The majority of assessments within your BTEC qualification are coursework based and completed internally, however, each course does include some external examinations. The Applied Science course has the following structure which equal the equivalent to 1 A level:

Assessed by external exam (90 marks, split into 3 40 minute sections – biology, chemistry and physics).

Worth 25% of total grade.

Students will be examined on the following:

Unit 2: PRACTICAL SCIENTIFIC PROCEDURES and TECHNIQUES

Internally assessed (4 assignments).

Worth 25% of total grade.

Students will complete the following assignments:

1. Undertake titration and colorimetry to determine the concentration of solutions.

2. Undertake calorimetry to study cooling curves.

3. Undertake chromatographic techniques to identify components in mixtures.

4. Review personal development of scientific skills for laboratory work.

Unit 3: SCIENCE INVESTIGATION SKILLS

Externally assessed (Supervised practical followed by a 60 mark written task based on the practical completed).

Worth 33% of total grade.

*Diffusion of molecules *Plants and their environment

Unit 12: DISEASES and INFECTIONS

Internally assessed (4 assignments).

Worth 17% of total grade.

Students will complete the following assignments:

1. Investigate different types of diseases and infections that can affect humans.

2. Examine the transmission of infectious diseases and how this can be prevented.

3. Understand how infectious diseases can be treated and managed.

4. Understand how the human body responds to diseases and infections.

BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science:

Due to the wide variety of units, the course is delivered in numerous ways to best suit the needs of the students and to get the best results from the qualification, for example:

» Teacher led theory lessons.

» Independent research tasks.

» Practical tasks – Planning, observation, collection of data, analysis and evaluation of practical and results.

The style of delivery will depend on the nature of the unit.

Bridging work:

These activities will be used to assess your ability to complete work independently, read and follow instructions, use of research skills and your own initiative in order to complete the tasks in full and in appropriate detail.

This bridging work is an adaptation of a BTEC level 2 assignment that we will use to help transition between GCSEs and your level 3 BTEC study. The scientific knowledge required is all content you covered in GCSE science.

Read through the Applied Science bridging work and complete the activities, ensuring they are kept safe as this work will be required in your lessons.

All answers and research tasks should be presented on a word document, using ARIAL and size 11 font.

Where word is not available, students should produce clear, neat hand written responses to the assessments.

BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science:
