ASTROLOGY

The word astrology comes from the early Latin word astrologia, deriving from the Greek noun ἀστρολογία, which means 'account of the stars'. Astrologia later passed into meaning of 'star-divination' with astronomia used for the scientific term.Astrology is the study of the influence that distant cosmic objects, usually stars and planets, have on human lives. The position of the sun, stars, moon and planets at the time of people's birth (not their conception) is said to shape their personality, affect their romantic relationships and predict their economic fortunes, among other divinations.

ASTROLOGICAL SIGNS

What most people know about astrology is their "sign," which refers to one of the 12 constellations of the zodiac. This is a form of sun-sign astrology, which is the astrology upon which newspaper horoscopes are based.

It is probably the simplest form, because nothing more than the date of someone's birthday is needed to generate a sun-sign horoscope.

GIVING NAMES TO THE PLANETS

In the ancient world, humans lived mostly under an open sky. People in those long ago times sensed something beyond the physical lights in the sky, they sensed the spiritual energy radiating from them and considered them to be divine sources of power.

Even though it is not true, it appears to us Earthlings, that the sun, moon, planets, and stars revolve around our planet. And, that is what most people believed until recent times. Ancient humans observed the planets moving in a predictable pattern in front of a backdrop of stars that moved more slowly or remained stationary. The Greek, Sumerian and Babylonian priests and priestesses systematically gave the planets names of various deities according to each one’s unique energy essence. Each god had dominion over a particular area of human life.

Oddly, astrology seems to have sprung up all over the known world at about the same time, and the planets were all given basically the same influential characteristics in each civilization.

Each planet, regardless of what civilization named it, was known for identical or similar influences. For example in all civilizations who used astrology, Mercury was the god of communication, quick thinking, wise, and calculating; Mars ruled cutting, blood, war, anger; Jupiter was expansive, large and the king of the gods.

BABYLONIAN BEGINNINGS

The Babylonians are considered to be the first who started studying Astrology. Their astrological charts enabled them to predict the recurrence of seasons and certain celestial events. So in the beginning and for more than 2,000 years, astrology and astronomy were the same science.Babylonian astrology was introduced to the Greeks early in the 4th century B.C. and, through the studies of Plato, Aristotle, and others, astrology came to be highly regarded as a science. It was soon embraced by the Romans (the Roman names for the zodiac signs are still used today) and the Arabs and later spread throughout the entire world.

ASTROLOGY: FACT OR FICTION?

The interest in astrology has persisted throughout the centuries, occasionally falling out of favor but always rebounding. Today, with practitioners in nearly every country, astrology's popularity is stronger than ever. Some may regard astrology as superstitious nonsense and without scientific basis. Others acknowledge the gravitational forces exerted on our planet by the Sun and Moon and deduce that the planets have similar powers that can be charted through astrology. Still others maintain that the symbolism of astrology can provide a deeper understanding of ourselves and of events.

ZODIAC SUN SIGNS

Zodiac sun signs are grouped into four essential elements that when combined, create the world and allow life to flourish. Each of the 12 astrology signs falls under a specific element and the 4 elements help in understanding everybody's place in the world. The zodiac sign elements are Air, Water, Earth and Fire.Zodiac elements are extremely symbolic with the astrology sign that they represent and will help you gain a greater understanding of people's zodiac signs and what they do in life. The astrology elements are just as important to the characteristics and personality traits of a person as their zodiac sun sign.

ASTROLOGICAL BIRTH CHART

Once you have your natal chart (or astrological birth chart), you can learn about the positions of the planets and points by sign, house, and aspect. Digging deeper into the natal chart, people can interpret such things as the lunar phases, hemisphere emphasis, and so forth.
