ARCHITECTURE AS CELEBRATION OF THE MUNDANE...

Architecture, for me, is a constant renovation, in which the new entity or concept clashes with

existing past, whether the architect wants to acknowledge it or not. Understanding the history

of the site is essential, both for designers and users. Architecture to me is not about the

complexity of form, structure, or order. Good architecture operates through functional spaces

and offers its audience great experiences. It can be appreciated at a foundational level. The

best architecture does not have to be extraordinary, rather, it should be composed of the

most basic and most simple things: the mundane that exist among us.

ARCHITECTURAL INTERESTS...

I am highly interested in building tectonics, and the ways that different materials can come

together. I believe that architecture is art painted with light and enhanced natural elements;

while the form, structure and materials are its canvas. With this portfolio, I hope to have the

opportunity to learn more about the tectonic thinking in architecture through materials like

metal and glass, as well as ways to improve the quality of natural experiences in my work.

The project is a structurally stable tree

house built with basic wood construction

techniques. Located in the Redwood National

Park, the structure rests on a medium sized

redwood tree, approximately four feet in

diameter. Redwood Tree House is designed

with double-height glazing for maximum

natural light. The sleeping loft can be opened

to the outdoors through a operable skylight.

Cross-bracing is used to preserve the

aesthetic and functionality of the design.

COMMUNITYSTUDIO

The proposed design art community on the intersection of

Apache and Terrace, where the students and professionals can

live and inspire one another through the courtyard space created.

The design is to incorporate a north-facing community studio

into the students’ apartment that is housing 24 units (8 two-bed-

rooms, and 16 one-bedrooms). The south facade of the building

is equipped with a system of perforated metal shutters to protect

the units against the unpleasant solar exposure of Arizona. With

double height ceiling and operable openings, the studio has a lot

of opportunities to further explore.

The task was to reprogram the Avondale Youth

Center into a professional development Center

for the youth in need, aged 14 to 21. The existing

center was used as the starting point of the

design, architecturally and conceptually. The

new center will collaborate with local restaurants

and culinary institutes to teach essential skill

sets that will improve the teenagers’ lives. The

existing center was preserved and renovated

as the culinary school’s classrooms. The design

is an minimum-expensed addition that houses

the remaining program: garden, kitchen, and

dinning area. The center is open for visitors

to experience the educational environment,

and cuisine prepared by the training youth of

Avondale.

Designed for a retired government worker in Ha Noi that

enjoys reading and spending quality time in the home

with his family, the house contains a living space with

maximum natural light and ventilation. As is commonly

found in the high-density cities of Viet Nam, the house

is a reinterpretation of the multi-storied box. Designed

on a limited budget, the big task was to bring a modern

design into a historic neighorhood through using vernacular

materials.
