    WHAT IS ALL ERTA?

Allerta is an open source typeface designed for use insignage. Allerta was designed to be easily and quicklyread from a distance. Each letter exploits the most uniqueaspects of that individual letter so that each charactercan be easily distinguished from any other.

Allerta has been released as an open source project so

that those countries, communities, and/or organizationswithout a proper signage system may have a way ofquickly designing and implementing one. While Allertais complete with a large character set, because it is opensource, modification and expansion is encouraged.

For the more urgent of circumstances, Allerta Stencil andan accompanying kit have been designed so that signagecan be created with nothing more than the kit of letters,a can of spray paint, and the nearest available substrate.Although the stencil kit may allude the finer points of ty-pographic spacing, it is intended to serve the most basic

purpose of signage: guiding people towards their desti-nation or towards assistance.

The name Allerta is derived from the origins of the wordalert (adj. swift, v. to advise or warn). The Italian originallerta literally means on the lookout.

TALL X-HEIGHTThe lowercase letters are proportionallyvery large in comparison to uppercaseletters to allow for larger letterforms andgreater counter space.

OPEN COUNTERS & APERTURESThe negative space is just as important asthe positive space when identifying a let-terform. Allerta maximizes that negative toincrease legibility.

EVERY LETTER IS DIFFERENTFor example: the lowercase l can be easilydistinguished from the uppercase I

ICONS INCLUDEDThe icons included are ideal for supple-menting message on signs with symbolsrepresenting things like food and aid.

    THE ALLERTA KIT

The kit is a physical collection of letters created by lasercutting Allerta Stencil into cardboard and using a simpledieline for each letter. The dieline is used to create alocking mechanism, so that each letter can be locked into

the next. This makes spray painting one message on mul-tiple substrates quick and easy.

The physical kit only exists as a prototype at the moment, but the files needed to create a kit are included in thedownloadable file. Kits can be hand, laser, or die cut.
