NARRABEEN TRACK UPGRADE IN 2017 / 18

Ministerial media release: Iconic Narrabeen athletics track

set to undergo $1.2 million makeover

13 December 2017

Sydney’s iconic Academy of Sport and Recreation at Narrabeen is

set to undergo a $1.2 million makeover of the athletics track

surface, grand stand and amenities which will benefit tens of

thousands of local and visiting athletes.

Minster for Sport, Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government is

investing in this significant overhaul one of Sydney’s oldest athletic

facilities to benefit thousands of grassroots and high-performance

athletes who use the facility each year.

“The Narrabeen Track is part of the success story of many of

Australia’s most prominent athletes, including Olympians Melinda

Gainsford Taylor and Annalise Ruby,” Mr Ayres said.

“More than 100,000 people visit the track each year including

around 90 school groups for athletic carnivals, and junior groups

for training and Little Athletics.

“Australia’s Invictus Games Team, National Wheelchair Games

athletes, the NSW Special Olympics team, and the Australian Men’s

and Women’s Rugby Sevens Teams also regularly use this facility

for high performance training.”

Narrabeen Athletics Track was developed as a staging camp for

Australia’s Olympic Team for the 1960 Games and the facility can

accommodate 450 people, and offers additional facilities for tennis,

basketball, cricket and swimming.

“The modernization of this track and facilities will instil a new sense

of pride in athletes at all levels from visiting school groups to high

performance athletes when it opens early next year,” Minister Ayres

said.

The $1.2 million upgrade of Narrabeen Athletics Track is set to

commence in coming weeks and is due for completion in March

2018.
