At a glance SEPTEMBER What is a Missionary?

“Not all of us do great things, but we can do small thing with great love.” - St Theresa of Calcutta

Prayer Intention for the Month: All Missionaries: That we may be missionaries in our own everyday lives, so that we may share God’s love with everyone we encounter. Focus Points:

What is a missionary? A person sent by Church authority to share the Gospel and/or provide aid (healthcare,

clean water, education etc.) among people in a given place or region Who are missionaries?

WE ALL ARE! Through the Sacrament of Baptism we are all missionaries. We can be missionaries right where we are by sharing God’s love with everyone we encounter.

What does a missionary do? A missionary is someone who knows and loves God, prays that all people will come to

know and love Jesus, answers the call of Jesus to go out to all the world to spread the Gospel

Being a missionary means sharing Gods love. In sharing God’s love we strive to help everyone live a happy and fulfilled life in knowing Christ.

At a glance OCTOBER World Mission Month & the Rosary

“Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” - St Francis of Assisi

Prayer Intention for the month: Global Solidarity: That we may use our talents to become instruments of Gods peace here on earth. Focus Points:

Mission Month: We celebrate Mission Month in recognition that World Mission Sunday is always celebrated the third Sunday of every October. Throughout the world, every Catholic Church will participate in a special collection to support the missionary works of the Church. This year World Mission Sunday will be celebrated on October 22.

Month of the Rosary: October 7 is the feast of the Holy Rosary. Throughout the month of October, Catholics are encouraged to prayer the Rosary to help grow closer to Jesus through the intercession of Mary. In particular we ask that, in honor of Mission Month, we pray the World Mission Rosary this month.

World Mission Rosary: To pray the World Mission Rosary, reflect on each area of the world. Green represents Africa, Blue for the Islands of the Pacific, White for Europe-home of

the Holy See, Red for the Americas, and Yellow for East, Asia. When you have completed the World Mission Rosary, you have given the world a big hug!

At a glance NOVEMBER Saints

“The saints were not superhuman. They were people who loved God in their

hearts, and who shared this joy with others.” - Pope Francis

Prayer Intention for the Month: Gratitude & Mindfulness: That we may learn to imitate the lives of the Saints and always listen to our Christian call to share our bountiful blessings with others.

Focus Points: What is a saint?

Saints model for living out our baptismal call: we learn how to follow Jesus more closely by looking to the Saints as our examples and models for living a Christian life.

Saint vs saint: We are all called to be saints. Saints with the capitalized “S” are those we know are already in heaven with Christ, and have been officially declared Saints by the Church through the canonization process.

Communion of Saints: Fellowship between Christians, living and dead. It also means that we are a community in communion in holy things and among holy persons. What is the difference between All Saints Day & All Souls Day? All Saints’ Day is November 1 and it commemorates the lives of all the saints that are in heaven. All Souls’ Day is November 2 and commemorates all those who have died.

“Nurturing and cherishing creation is a command God gives not only at the beginning of history, but to each of us. It is part of his plan; it means causing the world to grow responsibly, transforming it so that it may be

a garden, a habitable place for everyone.” - Pope Francis

Prayer Intention for the Month: Praying and Caring for our Planet: That we may always be good stewards of our planet and mutual home.

Focus points:

Being Missionary disciples means caring not just for people, but all of God’s creation. We must act as stewards of all creation, and care for our planet and natural resources.

We are responsible for caring for God’ creation, the earth (Genesis 1:26-28), but we are not in control of the earth. Rather it belongs to the Creator Himself (Psalm 24:1), who has made us His earthly stewards.

Creation story - Genesis 1: 1-31– Read this to remind us of the great care and design that God had in creating our planet.

“From Mary we learn to surrender to God’s will in all things. From May

we learn to trust even when all hope seems gone. From Mary we learn to love Christ, her son and the son of God.”

– St Pope John Paul II

Prayer Intention for the Month: Mary as our Role model That we may always be open to serve God and others, as Mary said yes to be of service to God. That our hearts may always be open to receiving and sharing love.

Focus points:

Mary, Patroness of Humanity: Patron saint of all human beings, watching over them with motherly care due to her role as the mother of Jesus.

Each person is precious, unique and loved by God, because God made us, that means we are all very special, and very important, no matter where we live, what we look like or what we have.

God invites us to show his love to one another. We experience God through our friends, family and even those who seem different than us. This means we have to treat people with respect and fairness. Love your neighbor as yourself.

St. Francis Xavier Ornament Craft

St. Francis Xavier is patron saint of foreign missions. He is a co-founder of the Society

of Jesus (Jesuits). He preached in Africa for a short time, but spent the later part of his

life preaching in India, Japan, and the Philippines. His feast day is December 3rd.

Because St. Francis is the patron saint for missions the ornament features the world.

It shows the areas which St. Francis preached. It also features a torch which

symbolizes his spreading the light of the Catholic faith.

To create this you will need:

• gray felt

• light blue felt

• yellow/orange felt

• dark brown felt

• green sharpie marker

• blue sharpie marker

• scissors

• glue (hot glue, felt glue, or tacky glue)

Gem Mines

In the Developing World, children mine a wide range of minerals – gold

and precious stones, zinc, coal, mica, and bauxite as examples.

Children are used in this work primarily because of their small size.

Rock quarrying, especially near booming cities and construction areas,

are hubs of child labor, as well as bonded and forced labor.

The following activity is designed to mimic conditions faced by children who work in gem mines in the Developing World. We recommend contacting parents to inform them of your intentions to engage in this activity with your students.

Materials needed: + Long, narrow and sturdy cardboard box in which a child of about six or seven years could fit. Use a larger box if needed to correspond to the size of older students. Seal one end of the box while keeping the opposite end open. + River rocks of various sizes (available in craft stores) + Small basket or container + Gold paint to mark special rocks + Chocolate coins or candy to be used as payment + Stop watch or watch with a second hand

Procedure: Place rocks (including only two that you have painted with gold paint), on the floor of the box toward the closed end. Dim the lights in the room. Ask one student to crawl into the box on his or her back (or belly), while carrying the basket / container and collect 10 rocks in 30 seconds.

The teacher (acting as “mine owner”), examines the rocks to see how many gold rocks were found. The student is “paid” (given chocolate) only for gold rocks; this fact is not divulged at the start of the activity. Repeat the exercise so that all students have an opportunity to “mine” for rocks.

Reflection Questions: + How does it feel being in a dark, enclosed space? + How did your motivation change

once you learned you would only be rewarded for finding gold rocks?

+ In the Developing World, when children are not paid for this work, it often means that they and their family will go hungry for a day or more. How do you feel knowing this?

+ For further study or reflection ask students to go on a web quest to find out information about their favorite gem, birthstone or precious metal, seeking information such as its country of origin, how it appears in its natural state, how it is collected from the earth, who gathers and / or mines for this material (children). Ask students to report on their findings.

Re-Creation Activities Get Crafty!

How can we cultivate and protect creation? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

www.

.org

Pope Francis encourages us to reject the “throwaway culture.” We want to be creators, not destroyers! Here are a few ideas to create fun instead of trash:

Homemade Bowling Alley Instead of throwing out plastic water or soda bottles, wash them out Fill them with a little sand, some pebbles, or water with food

coloring (the heavier the weight, the harder the game!) Arrange them in a triangle shape and bowl them over with a ball

Milk Cap Frenzy Save the caps from used milk jugs (how many colors can you collect?) Wash them off and keep them in a box Use them to build towers, or glue them to cardboard to make designs

Buckets of Fun Collect various shapes and sizes of wide-mouthed containers (frozen

juice containers, canisters, etc.) Paint or decorate them with bright colors Draw a number on each one to show how many points it’s worth Take turns tossing a ball, milk cap, or other object into the

containers to see how many points you can win Party On

Save empty toilet paper rolls (pick off any paper scraps stuck on there) Color or paint them with bright colors, stickers, beads, etc. Thread them onto a long string Hang them up whenever you celebrate a special occasion

Wrap It Up Save colorful fabric scraps or buy some from a thrift store Wash them and use them as gift wrap that keeps on giving: your

friend will be able to use the fabric later on another great gift!

Activity

On a map or atlas, trace the missionary journeys of St. Francis Xavier. Then, go on a web quest to find out more about those areas of the world. How many people there are Catholics today? How many missionaries are in those countries today? How do they – and the Church – serve the poor and the suffering?

St. Francis Xavier Who: Francis Xavier was born on April 7, 1506 in Spain. At the age of 19, he went to study at the University of Paris – and made a friend who would change his life, Ignatius Loyola. Both would become priests; Francis Xavier in 1537. Together, they would establish a religious community of men, the Society of Jesus – also known as the Jesuits.

Where: With little experience and just a heart on fire to tell the world about Jesus, Father Francis sailed, in 1541, from Portugal to that country’s colony of Goa on the west coast of India. He next went to Cape Comorin on the southern tip of India, where he introduced many people to the Catholic faith. A trip to the East Indies – to Malacca and the Moluccas – came before a journey to Japan, in 1549, making him the first missionary to preach the Gospel there. Father Francis’ greatest desire was to proclaim the Gospel in China, at that time closed to outsiders. Some stories even claim that he bribed a ship’s captain to smuggle him into the country. Once there, he became very ill and died on December 3, 1552. His body was brought back to Goa and buried in the first stop of his missionary journeys.

Wow! The only thing Father Francis took with him on all his journeys was his book of daily prayers, called a breviary, and a book of meditations. He was canonized together with his friend, Ignatius of Loyola, on March 12, 1622. He is co-patron of missionaries and the Missions along with St. Théresè of Lisieux.

Penny Wars

Penny Wars is a game to be competed between classrooms/homerooms or grade levels. The object is to get as many points as possible during the "war." The money raised during the penny war can be donated to a missionary of your choice. This is a fun way to encourage students to participate in Rice Bowl during Lent.

1. The project is run for at least five days. Ideally during an entire liturgical season (Lent or

Advent)

2. Each class or grade will need a large, enclosed container. A sealed, one gallon plastic milk

container, with a slit large enough to insert coins and bills, works quite well.

3. Each container is labelled with the name of the class teacher, a room number, or any

appropriate identification of your choosing.

4. The containers should all be placed in a central location where there is some adult

supervision. The school library or a location in clear view of the office staff are good

choices.

5. Students from class put their pennies into the containers of OTHER classes. Each Penny

reduces the number of points from that container.

6. Classes put non-penny currency (nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars, etc.) into their own class

bucket. Each silver coin or bill adds the number of points that coin or bill is worth to that

container. (e.g. a nickel is worth five points, a dime ten, a dollar 100, etc…)

7. Containers are emptied and counted daily. The total monetary amount of pennies is

deducted from the total number of other currency.

8. The totals for all classes are posted daily to encourage friendly competition. The totals

can be posted as tallies. A chart, blackboard or whiteboard, in a central location, works

well for these postings.

9. A rotating pennant or cup, given to the leading class each day, adds to the excitement of

the project. The pennant or cup can be retained by the home room or class with the most

overall points at the end of the penny war.

10. It helps to have a committee organized to count and roll the coins. Try asking a friendly

local bank to help with the service.
