You are probably tired o people asking, What do you want to be when you grow
up? Some students know exactly what they want to do, but most havent got a
clue. The idea o choosing a career is intimidating, and it eels like its ar in the
uture. Theres little time in the commotion o classes, activities, sports, work, and un to
think about what career you want to pursue ater graduation rom high school or college.
It pays, though, to take the time to think about your uture career. The truth is that

sense. I you choose a career direction now, you can select classes and activities that will

do in lie. Thats what you should want, too.
So the time is right to take charge o your lie and
think about the uture. You need a plan o action
or how to get rom where you are today to where
you want to be in a ew years: starting out on a
personally and proessionally rewarding career.

Lets start with some basicsteps you should take toget organized, plan or the
uture, and start on the road to success.

First, you need to gure out some things aboutyoursel. This step can be as simple as writing downa list o your interests (like video games or rockclimbing), your hopes and dreams (like helpingothers), your talents (like writing or math ability),and your weaknesses (i youre squeamish at thesight o blood, or example, you might not want
to be a doctor).
Follow up on this inormal exercise by takingsome ormal assessments to determine your
interests and abilities. Common assessments
include the Kuder (www.kuder.com), Bridges (www.
bridges.com), Career Cruising (www.careercruising.
com), COIN (www.coinedu.com), and Myers-Briggs
(www.myersbriggs.org) tests. These tools give most
o our students some career exploration awareness
by the time they enter eighth or ninth grade.
Ask your principal or counselor about the career
assessments available at your school.

Once youve learned about yoursel, learn moreabout your career options. There are thousands
o occupations out there o which you may never
have heard, and others that do not yet exist
because the technologies have not been developed.
Fortunately, there are plenty o resources (see inside
back cover) or you, and they are as close as the
nearest computer.
One o the most helpul is the Occupation and
Skill Computer-Assisted Researcher (or OSCAR,
or short) rom the Texas Workorce Commission.
It is a vast database o inormation about hundreds
o proessions. You can nd OSCAR at www.ioscar.
org. Another good place to start is O*NET (www.onetcenter.org).
Gather inormation about what you can earn in
the careers in which you are interested. Find out
whether the careers you are considering have a
promising utureare they adding or losing jobs?
Check out the education youll need to enter
those careers.

Create Your TAP
Once you have a better idea o your interests andabilities, you are ready to plan or high school andbeyond. The Texas Achievement Plan, or TAP, is yourplan or preparing or the career o your choice.
First students choose a cluster, then a particularoccupational goal. In the eighth grade a student mightchoose Construction and then later become interestedin a narrower feld such as a building inspector orConstruction Manager.
The program o study you chooseyour plan
does not stop with graduation rom high school,A student could then pursue a two-year degree as adesigner or a our-year degree as a landscape architect.
You should set up a TAP that takes you throughcareer preparation after high school, revising yourblueprint as needed as you go along. If your career plansinclude college study, ask your counselor about testsrequired for admission to college, such as the PSAT,SAT, or ACT.
seek Out special Program
Many Texas schools oer innovative programs toprepare students or specifc career areas. Theseinclude career and technical education (CTE)programs, academies, and magnet schools. Once
youve decided on a career direction, ask yourcounselor about special programs in your area that
may provide related experiences in your chosen career.Samuel Odamah enrolled in the architecture
program at the University o Texas at Arlington,having ound his career calling at Dallass SkylineCareer Development Center, a high school with careerprograms in a number o dierent felds.
Skyline is one o the ew schools in the countrythat oer programs in architecture, Odamah says.In some careers, Skyline students could even getproessional certifcations or licenses right in highschool. It was a great place because you could fnd outwhether you really wanted to enter a career.
Odamah says that the career cluster system atSkyline taught him the value o planning or his career
and his lie. We learned about planning ahead, hesays. Those who plan things ahead o time dont haveto catch up. Its just a matter o what a person wantsout o lie. Planning gives you a betterplatorm or success.

Career Clusters& Prgrams f Study ?WHAT ARE
Acareer cluster is a group o occupations and broadindustries that share certain eatures. The Architecture& Construction cluster, or example, includes architects,
carpenters, and electricians. Texas has adopted 16 careerclusters (see back cover), the same ones designated anddeveloped by the U.S. Department o Education. As thegraphic below shows, within each cluster are programso study, which are more specic groupings o similaroccupations. Think o a program o study as being like acollege major. In Architecture & Construction, you mightchoose to ocus on Design/Pre-Construction in high schooland college.

Be aware that demand or workers and the wages paid inArchitecture & Construction are both closely linked to the Texaseconomy. While times may be good at one point, an economicdownturn can lead to layos. The way to protect yoursel is todevelop skills that make you unique in the job market.

In Architecture & Construction, be ready or interesting workand good pay. But keep in mind, Cagle says, that you owesomething to the proession as well. Throughout history, sheobserves, buildings have always aected culture as much asthey have refected it. Architecture is as much art as it is science,and I think theres a tremendous responsibility to enhance thecommunity with artistic design.

What do you need to do to take advantage o the hiring boom inArchitecture & Construction?
Its really good to have a knack or science and math, but youalso need to be procient at reading and understanding, saysarchitect Lynne Cagle, now a project coordinator o trade andindustrial education at the University o North Texas in Denton. A
successul career in construction or architecture depends on yourability to work with others, and that requires people well-inormedin all subjects who can get along with almost anyone.
A sense o history, art, and architecture history is important,says Cagle. Then theres also the marketing aspect o these careers,so a good business sense is helpul. Basically, there are a lot opeople in this eld who are good at being generalists.
Construction is a lot o teamwork, Niemann adds, so Iwould think anyone who enjoys being part o sports teams andthings o that nature would develop strong teamwork skills.Communication is the most important aspect o this eldace-to-ace contact, not just email.
Work Wae
Salaries in both architecture and construction depend on theamount o training you have, the years o experience, and howmuch responsibility youre willing to assume. The pay inconstruction depends on your level, says Anthony. Carpenterscan make $38,000 a year. Masons might make approximately$42,000. And o course, i you get into management positions andownership, its going to be much higher. Going into a companyater a reputable our-year university as a junior project manager,
youre going to start out right out o school at about $50,000a year.

When you think about what its like towork in Architecture & Construction,imagine a team o people all pushing
toward a single goal. The group includesworkers with a wide variety o talentsbuildingdesign, interior design, landscape design,project management, cost estimation, roofng,plumbing, electrical work, bricklaying, heatingand air conditioning, building maintenance,and many other talents. Everyone plays a part inbringing a building project to completion.
Charlene Anthony, executive director oHoustons chapter o Associated GeneralContractors o America, notes that theteam is united by a common sense oaccomplishment. Theres a level o pride inthe industry, driving around your communityand knowing youve helped build it, she
observes. Thats the resounding thing I hear,whether its building a place o worship orhomes or shopping centerstheres a senseo satisaction in having helped build yourcommunity.

Building projects usually start with anarchitect and project planners.
Architecture is a lot more complex thanmost people believe. Its not just putting lineson paper, notes architect Lynne Cagle, nowa project coordinator or trade and industrialeducation at the University o North Texas inDenton. Its the ability to translate what thoselines will look like once a building is built.Architects envision what no one else has seen.This is the largest orm o visual arts.
But architecture is not just about art, shesquick to explain. Its also about unction.

buildings can be just as complicated andimportant as those made on the largerscale. Interior designers make critical

In the summer o 2004, Pilot PointHigh School student Kate Ticknerentered Huckabee University, a high
school internship program sponsoredby the Fort Worth architecture frmHuckabee, Inc.
The nine students at HuckabeeUniversity (now called NextGeneration Design Institute) ormedthree teams o three in a week-longcompetition or scholarship money.
Our project was to design a high-end, multiuse retail/housing, restaurant/park development along the coastline atGalveston, Tickner recalls. We had toully develop a typical housing unit and
then design the retail, restaurant, andpark amenities.Tickners team won the competition.

Apprenticeship training is a commonentryway into careers in construction.Participants earn certicates in skills such ascarpentry, masonry, and electrical work.
Gary Strouz, training director o the ElectricalApprenticeship Training Program in Houston,says his program combines on-the-job training
and classroom studies to produce top-notchelectricians. Contractors generally pair up one
journeyman electrician witheach apprentice.
Strouz says there are similarprograms in the Houstonarea or plumbers, pipetters,
carpenters, insulators, heavy machineoperators, bricklayers, and paintersanycrat thats on a construction site.
Though there are training programs orstudents still in high school, Strouzs programrequires a high school diploma, as well as prooo a passing grade in high school algebra. Youhave to do mathematical calculations to do
