L-Shape Great for easy, efficientmovement andcontinuous counterspace. Naturally allowsfor a dining area, orcan open into anadjacent living area.
U-ShapeVery accessible layoutfor a single cook, butcan also accommodatetwo. Routes trafficaway from the kitchenfor undisturbedefficiency.
Kitchen Layout
The most efficient kitchens are designed around a “work triangle” – the classic, imaginary path between therefrigerator, the cooktop/rangeand the sink. The idea behindan efficient work triangle is tominimize wasted motion suchas extra walking and reaching.
Even though today’s kitchenshave additional, secondaryfocal points (microwave, dishwasher, etc.), the work triangle is still a good way toevaluate and streamline yourbasic layout. Some things to consider:
For best results, each side of the triangleshould be no longer than 9 feet and noshorter than 4 feet.
Allow for at least 18 inches of counterspace on each side of the sink forcleanup and loading the dishwasher.
Allow at least 15 inches of counterspace near the refrigerator for unpacking groceries.
Provide 3 feet of counter space beside the range/cooktop for foodpreparation. If two cooks will be working at the same time, double the space to 6 feet.
Also be sure to provide the necessaryspace for your family’s specific storageand eating-area requirements.
6
Here are the primary types of kitchen layout, along with the benefits of each.See which of these layouts generally works best for your family and lifestyle.
G-ShapeAdding on to a U-Shape layout canprovide an extra section of cabinets andappliances, or create aconvenient spot fordining or serving.
Corridor or GalleyCreates a very efficientworkspace for a singlecook, but will becramped for two.Good way tomaximize space in asmall area.
One-WallIn this layout, thework trianglebecomes asingle line. This optioncan reducethe kitchenarea andopen theroom forentertaining.
IslandsIf your layoutpermits, astrategicallylocated islandcan add counterand storagespace and/orallow room fora cooktop orsecond sink.

Sketching YourExisting Kitchen
Before you lay out your newkitchen, use a pencil and thegrid sheet we’ve provided tosketch your existing kitchen.Your sketch doesn’t have to beperfect; but it will give youand your Lowe’s KitchenSpecialist a starting point forcreating your new kitchen plan.
Room Dimensions
Begin by sketching the outline of yourexisting kitchen, first indicating thewalls and their dimensions andlabeling them Wall #1, Wall #2, etc. (See the sample sketch.)
Then indicate the windows, doors, major appliances, sinks andother “fixed” features, along with theirdimensions – plus the location ofelectrical switches, outlets andplumbing.
Elevations
To record height measurements, draw elevations of each wall as if youwere viewing it straight on. (Numberthe wall elevations to correspond withyour original floor plan.) Be sure toinclude measurements for allwindows and doors on each wall. (See Elevation, Wall #1, diagram.)
How To Measure Doors
Width – Measure from the outside edge of trim to the outside edge oftrim. Record these measurements inyour sketch.
Height – Measure from the floor tothe top of the door trim. Record thesemeasurements in your sketch.
How To Measure Windows
Width – Measure from the outsideedge of trim to the outside edge oftrim. Record these measurements onyour sketch.
Height – First measure from the floorto the bottom of the window’s apron(the lower-most moulding underneaththe window sill.) Then measure theheight from the floor to the top of thewindow trim. Record thesemeasurements in your sketch.
Plumbing
Locate the centerline of the sink(s),and measure its distance (along thewall) from the nearest corner; transferthis measurement to your sketch.
For each fixture, note whetherplumbing enters through the wall orthrough the floor.
For gas appliances, locate their centerlines, and indicate theirmeasurements on your sketch.
Electrical
Indicate the location of all electricaloutlets (and their voltages) on yoursketch. Also include the locationof all phone, cable TV and Internet outlets.
If you want to go the extra mile, tryyour hand at drawing a lighting plan, indicating the location of your lightfixtures: over the sink and under thecabinets, as well as any general overhead fixtures. If not, simply referto your lighting checklist to start adialogue with your Lowe’s KitchenDesign Specialist.
Note: If you anticipate relocating your plumbingor electrical outlets, consult with a contractor toensure that the new location is feasible and meetslocal building codes.

Drawing Key
This is a guide to help you draw the basic kitchen components. Thesymbols here represent a sampling of standard widths and depths ofcabinets, appliances, sinks and other kitchen components. They’re scaledto match the grid.
Draw the outline of the room on the graph paper on the next page. One bold grid square equals one foot.
Note the location of existing plumbing, power outlets, phone jacks, computer connections, etc. on the outline.
Experiment with different layouts to see your options. (See perforatedpage in the middle of this book.)
Transfer your layout to the graph paper in the planner.

Sketching Your New Kitchen
Now draw an overhead sketch of your dream kitchenon the grid sheet we’ve provided. Again, your sketchdoesn’t have to be perfect, just a reasonably accurate depiction of your design. (See the sample sketch.)
Things to Consider:
Will any walls be relocated?
Will the sink or appliances need to be moved to create more efficient workstations?
Would you like to add an island, peninsula, or work space?
If the answers to any of these questionsis “yes,” be sure to indicate this onyour sketch. Feel free to note anyother ideas that you’d like to discusswith your Lowe’s Kitchen Specialist.

Now that their three young boys were in school, this couple’s kitchen had become outdated.
New work areas, morestorage space (includinga place for backpacksand jackets) and moreefficient applianceswere at the top of thewish list.
New cabinets, featuringa Bisque glaze andbeadboard styling, replaced the old ones, and a freestanding hutch(in a darker, contrastingfinish) created a customtouch while furtherexpanding storage.
New solid-surface countertops in a rich pattern, along with atumbled-tile backsplash, addedwarmth and visual interest. Atriple-bowl sink enhanced mealpreparation and clean-up.
A cooktop and double wall oven replaced the old range and freed up space for amatching desk with file drawers– providing a convenient nichefor paying bills and storingrecipes and cookbooks.
Recessed and undercabinetlighting was installed to providemuch needed illumination ofspecific areas and tasks.
Other efficient new appliancesincluded a large-capacity, tall-tubdishwasher and a space-saving,countertop-depth refrigerator.
