By JACK ALLEN NOMINATIONS—T h e r e are
few surprises in the Emmy award nominations for television's finest in 1961-62, approved this week by trustees of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Winners will be announced on a special telecast originating in Hollvwood. New York City and Washington. D.C., on the NBC-TV network and Ch. 2 at 10 Tuesday night, May 22.
OMISSIONS—Two of the best shows of the year, the orbital flight of Lt. Col. John H. Glenn Jr. and "Tour of the White House" with Mrs. John F. Kennedy, were removed from competition because of pooled network coverage.
With these two top stars of the season removed, betting on the best single performance, at least in the actress category, should be a cinch. We'll wager a used TV tube on Julie Harris for her performance in the "Hall of Fame" special. "Victoria Re-gina." last N o v e m b e r . This should be like a bet on the Yankees.
Julie's competition includes Geraldine Brooks for a "Bus Stop" episode, "Call Back Yesterday"; Suzanne Pleshette in

NO OLD-FASHIONED HAND WIRING AIL RCA VICTOR TVi ARE MADE THIS BETTER WAY FOR ORIATER DEPENDABILITY AND LESS SERVICE I
N o old-fashioned hand-wiring to com* loos* or ehort-cfrewt. RCA Security Sealed Circuit* or* trie most uniform, most dependable TV circuit* ewer developed .' So dependable, they're th* same type used by the VJ. Government for space •ateUitet and missiles . . . proved reliable more than 2* million times in RCA Victor TV sets!
"Shining Image" on "Dr. Kil-dare," a truly remarkable performance; Inger Stevens in 'The Price of Tomatoes," a Dick Powell show; and Ethel Waters, who also was very good in "Goodnight Sweet Blues" on "Route 66."
EIGHT PICKS—Eight nominations for awards in various categories were won by both "Victoria Regina" and the "Ben Casey" series. Scowling Vincent Edwards probably will win best series performance by sheer popularity.
He's up against Paul Burke of "Naked City"; George Maharis, "Route 66"; E. G. Marshall, "The Defenders", and another TV doctor, Jackie Cooper of "Hennesey." The popular Richard Chamberlain of "Dr. Kil-dare" failed to win a nomination.
We'll stick out a vulnerable neck and choose these others in the major categories:
Humor: Bob Newhart, against Andy Griffith, Red Skelton, "Hazel" and "Car 54."
Drama: "Victoria Retina." Opposition is "Ben C a s e y " : "The Defenders"; "Dick Powell Show"; "Naked City": "People Need People" on "Alcoa Premiere."
V a r i e t y : "Garry Moore Show." It's unfair to pit a good continuous series like this, Perry Como's show and Walt Disney's hour against such excellent specials on a one-shot basis as Edie Adams* "Here's Edie" and Judy Garland's show.
OTHERS — Music: "Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic in Japan." Opposition, "Bell Telephone Hour"; NBC Opera, and ABC's "The Thief and the Hangman."
Best series actress: Gertrude Berg. She faces Cara Williams, Donna Reed, Shirley Booth and a surprise entry, Mary Stuart of the daytime series, "Search for Tomorrow."
Best single performance by an actor in a leading role: Mickey Rooney in "Somebody's Waiting," a Dick Powell Show offer
ing. He faces s t r p g competition from Milton Befc in the dramatic "Doyle A g a i n s t the House," also oal Dick Powell, whose show camJkip with another nominee, Peter Falk in "The Price of TomatoJI." Others are Lee Marvin in If'People Need People" of "Alrioa Premiere" and James Donap in "Victoria Regina."
PICKS-Educalonal - v> . i- i i c affairs: "Close-uf* on ABC-TV, the beautifully done documentary series whicl is also up for program of the year with its "Walk in My Sl ies" segment. Other nominees are CBS Reports, David Briapey's Journal, Howard K. Smi| | , NBC White Paper, and A B C | "Wide World of Sports."
Single or seriel musical-variety performance:!Judy Garland, over Edie Adamsj Carol Burnett, Perry Como, Y|fes Montand's Children; C a p t a i n Kangaroo, over Leonard Bwnstein, " 1 , 2, :t—Go." "Shari Lewis Show," "Update" and tfelt Disney.
