Individuals are invited to dress in their finest witch andwizard wardrobes to participate in a costume contest fora Harry Potter gift basket. Photos of costume participantswill be taken throughout the day and then voted on by thepublic on the library's website until Tuesday, Aug. 1.Another gift basket will be awarded to the winning team inthe Harry Potter trivia competition.

In addition, witches and wizards are asked to bring anon-perishable item for the "Feed the Muggles!" FoodDrive. All donations will go to the Community ActionPartnership of Strafford County's food pantry. The driveis sponsored by OWLS, a local community service groupaffiliated with the library and a chapter of the Harry PotterAlliance.

Harry Potter Day is free and open to the public.

Road closures and parkingrestrictions in place for Sunday

road raceDover Police Chief Anthony F. Colarusso, Jr. announcesthe following road closures and parking restrictions for theSIX03 Summerfest 10K/5K Race event, which is part ofthe Dover Race Series. This event includes a combined5K and 10K course run simultaneously, starting at theDover Ice Arena (110 Portland Ave) and ending atPhilbrick's Sports (161 Portland Ave). On Sunday, July 30, 2017 at 9 a.m., the following streetclosures will be in effect, in the direction and during thetimes noted below:

From 8 to 11 a.m., Atlantic Avenue and Gulf Road will beone-way outbound only, towards Maine, from PortlandAvenue to Baer Road. Inbound traffic from Maine will bediverted onto Baer Road through Rollinsford;From 9 to 10:30 a.m., Portland Avenue will be open onlyto one-way traffic in the easterly direction from RogerStreet to Oak Street. Traffic from Rollinsford will bediverted north onto Oak Street at the Rollinsford town line.From 9 to 9:30 a.m., Oak Street will be open only to one-way traffic in the northerly direction from Portland Avenueto Broadway. Motorists should expect delays in these areas or beprepared to follow marked detours, especially while theroad races are ongoing between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Doverand Rollinsford police personnel and a number of eventvolunteers will be on hand to help manage the flow oftraffic along the race route.

Parking restrictions will also be in effect along PortlandAvenue east of Roger Street on the day of the event.

Dover Recreation is now conducting on online surveyabout the new Adventure Playground at Henry Law Park.The survey is looking for feedback about the how the parkis used and how it can be improved.

Out on Tuesday. Aug. 1Police Chief Anthony F. Colarusso, Jr. is pleased toannounce the Dover Police Department will participate inNational Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017 in HenryLaw Park. The event will take place from 4:30 to 7 p.m.and is free to the public. National Night Out is a time forcommunity members to meet with police officers, discussissues, learn what the police do, and unite with thecommon goal of crime prevention.

The public will be able to see some of the specializedequipment and vehicles that the police use to carry outtheir duties including the crime scene and mobilecommand vehicles. The Police Department's MountedPatrol and K9 officers will be at the event and interactingwith the public. National Night Out will also featurefirefighters and fire apparatus from Dover Fire andRescue.

"The Dover Police Department recognizes the importanceof community policing and working with local residents tosolve problems," Colarusso said. "National Night Out isan opportunity to interact with our community in a positiveenvironment and promote the power and value of police-community partnerships."

There will also be a dozen community organizations onhand to provide literature and other information related tohealth, safety, and wellness. Information on drugprevention, treatment and recovery resources, bike andseatbelt safety, violence prevention, and early childhoodeducation will be available to the public through variousbooths at the event. There will also be food vendors onhand.

National Night Out is an annual community-buildingcampaign that promotes police-community partnershipsto make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live.Dover's National Night Out is an opportunity for citizens tomeet and engage with their first responders.

Dover's National Night Out is a family oriented event andis affiliated with National Night Out, which involves over35 million people in more than 10,000 communitiesacross the nation.

Dedication ceremony slated fornew Parking Garage murals

The Dover Arts Commission and Seymour OsmanCommunity Center will hold a dedication ceremony fornew parking garage murals depicting the history of Doveron Friday, Aug. 4, 2017 at 5:30 p.m., at the OrchardStreet Parking Garage.

The Dover Arts Commission submitted a grantapplication to the New Hampshire State Council on theArts in 2016 for the creation and installation of mosaicmurals at the parking garage, the City's first public artinstallation.

The five mosaic murals, installed on each level of thegarage, were created earlier this year by children agesseven to 12 in an afterschool program at the SeymourOsman Community Center. Assembled under theguidance of Robert Rossel of Epping, a New HampshireState Council on the Arts' artist, each mural depicts aniconic Dover landmark. The icons were designed by PipClews of Portsmouth. The mural frames were constructedwith donated wood by building trades students at DoverHigh School.

The murals span Dover's history, including a gundalow,

the mills, Garrison Hill Tower, City Hall and the DoverPolice Mounted Patrol.

City of Dover and surroundingtowns to hold Hazardous Waste

Collection DayThe City of Dover, along with the towns of Rollinsford, Leeand Madbury, will hold a Hazardous Waste CollectionDay on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the City's Community Services facility, 271Mast Road.

The goal of Hazardous Waste Collection Day is to allowfor the proper disposal of household hazardousmaterials. Residents of the four communities can bring household hazardous waste to Community Services forsafe disposal.

The following household waste will be accepted: fertilizerwith acids; bathroom cleaners; brush cleaner; pesticidescar waxes/polish; disinfectants; corrosives; fungicides; creosote; furniture polish paint/stain/finish;insect spray; driveway sealers/tar; metal polish (leadand oil based); lighter fluid; flea powder; mothballs; rust preventative; pest strips/traps; gasoline;oven cleaner; solvents; pesticides; radiator flush; photochemicals; thinner/turpentine; poisons; roofing tar; rug cleaner; wood preservatives; pool chemicals;and wood strippers.

Empty containers are not hazardous. Please dispose ofthem in your regular trash.

Explosives, asbestos, latex paint, oil (new or used) andantifreeze will not be accepted.

Hazardous Waste Collection Day in Dover is forhousehold residents only. Proof of residency is required.

Central Avenue bridge workcontinues the week of July 31

Alternative parking available to downtowncustomers, businesses

Repair work to the Central Avenue Bridge will continue theweek of July 31.

The east side of the bridge has reopened, and work hasshifted to the west side of the bridge.

The contractor is currently on schedule to complete thework by Aug. 22, 2017.

During the work, there is no parking on the bridge. Thebridge sidewalks will remain open and accessible, withthe exception of brief closures necessary to complete thework.

Additional parking is available in the immediate area fordowntown businesses and customers. Both the OrchardStreet parking lot and public parking garage areavailable. The City has also arranged for 40 privateparking spaces to be available as public parking for theduration of the work. These spaces are located in theparking lot behind Oriental Delight and in the OrchardStreet parking lot.

The Central Avenue Bridge work includes the removal ofpavement, patching the bridge's concrete deck, repairingexpansion joints, and repaving the bridge.

Washington Street gas main workcontinues week of July 31

Utility crews will continue work to replace a gas main onWashington Street, from the Makem Bridge to LocustStreet, and along Central Avenue, from the lower squareto Kirkland Street.

While the work is under way, motorists should expecttemporary detours and delays. Work crews will be on siteMonday through Friday, approximately 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Aug. 2, 1644 - It was ordered by the Court that Elisabeth,wife of Mathew Giles, be whipped or redeemed with afine of 20 shillings for reviling words against some of themembers of the church.

July 28, 1665 - The treasurer was ordered to pay for thekilling of a wolf in the year 1663, "as appeareth in a noteunder the Constable's hands, in the hands of John Hall,Deacon, under the selectmen's hands," the money to goto the said John Hall, Deacon, and fifteen other persons,each to receive an equal portion. As the price for killing awolf was but 5 pounds. The share of each could not havebeen large, though it was very proper, as the town hadgiven its note for the amount, that the same should bepaid.

July 31, 1766 - Rev. Jeremy Belknap was invited topreach in Dover as an assistant of Rev. Mr. Gushing, andafter he had preached "as a probationer" for a month itwas unanimously voted by the parish to pay him onehundred pounds lawful money, yearly or every year, as asalary. Dr. Belknap afterwards purchased a house onSilver street where he lived during his ministry in Dover,which stood on the site of the Belknap school house, andwas taken down when the school house was built in 1854.The Belknap lot originally comprised the adjoining lot onwhich the house built about 1776 by Dr. Ezra Green,where Dr. Green lived until his death in 1847, and whichdid not pass out of the hands of his descendants until1876.

Aug. 3, 1829 - James G. Avery, a young man in theemploy of the Manufacturing Company, fell from the DryHouse, a distance of about 40 feet, surviving the accidentbut a few hours.

July 31, 1848 - Died, Alfred I. Sawyer, aged 49 - a usefuland enterprising citizen, and the founder of the "SawyerWoolen Mills."
