Bar codes

The striped pattern is code for a number. The number is scanned and sent to a computer in

the shop's office. The computer sends a message back saying what

product it is, what size it is and its price. The price itself is not in the barcode because it

changes from day to day and shop to shop. If the machine cannot read the barcode, the

assistant types in the number.

Electronic Points of Sale

Every checkout is a computer. They are called Electronic Points of Sale

(EPOS) They give itemized receipts (the name of each

item is on it). They add up the total. They automatically take off any discounts. They take away the amount sold from the shop's

stock level automatically.

Self Scanning

Some supermarkets give those customers with store accounts a bar code scanner they can use themselves.

They scan things themselves as they put them in their trolley.

This means they do not have to go through the normal checkout. Much quicker.

But what is the problem for the supermarket?

Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT)

You don't have to use cash! Your bank card is scanned. You enter your security number (PIN) The supermarket is then allowed to take that

amount of money straight from your bank account. Easy!

But don't tell anyone your PIN!

Stock Control

So the EPOS counts the things that are sold automatically.

If the number of an item gets too low, the main computer automatically sends an e-mail to the warehouse.

The first thing the workers know that they are out of stock is when the delivery lorry arrives!

Some workers have small hand scanners to make sure the shelves are never empty.

Loyalty Cards

Regular customers can apply for a card. The customer gets prizes, discounts and

information about special offers. The supermarket finds out about the customers

views and needs and can send publicity to them.
