large turnout of students and their families, faculty and staff
celebrated the opening of Cal State Hayward’s Annual Juried Student Exhibition at the University Art Gallery with a barbeque and an awards ceremony May 12. The exhibit of paintings, photo-graphs, sculptures, electronic and mixed media art, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 3 p.m. until June 4. For the days of June 1-4 the exhibit will be open every day. “The student art exhibit brings students together and is a time for them to see what (their classmates) are up to,” said Carol Liang, the gallery’s assistant curator. “Since it is juried, it encourages students to act with a competitive spirit and it is the only student show we have each year.” This year the “juror” that selected the 39 pieces of art in the show - out of 70 entries - was
CSUH News Servicesal State Hayward’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present
its annual festival of dance and one-act plays, the XARC Festival, June 3- 6. This year’s springtime ritual, produced by advanced students, will provide two different pro-grams offered by the seven direc-tors and one choreographer. Each bill will feature four short performances of 10 to 20 minutes. The first bill will be performed Thursday, June 3, at 7 p.m. and Sat-urday, June 5, at 8 p.m. The second bill will play Friday, June 4, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, June 6, at 2 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door or may be reserved by calling the CSUH Theatre Box Office, (510) 885-3261. Thursday and Saturday perfor-mances will begin with a dance number, “The Race,” choreo-graphed by Vickie George. George and lighting designer Rachael Fishman will make the lights dance along with the performers. Jeremy Aluma’s original adapta-tion, “Juliet in Gaza,” based on Shake-speare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” explores a relationship compromised by the political and cultural conflict in Israel. The performances continue with Naomi Wallace’s monologue of an Iraqi war survivor, “The Retreating World,” directed by Rubie Lodin. David Ives’ comic concept piece about an im-probable science experiment, “Words, Words, Words,” directed by Julie Col-lins, will conclude the evening. Friday and Sunday performances will begin with a performance art piece by Jesse Miller, “Q47.” Dawn Monique Williams and her cast will offer “The Beauty Inside,” by Catherine Filloux, a dark comment on the plight of women in fundamentalist Turkey. David Toda will provides the fes-tival with another original adaptation of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers. Todad’s “Polifany” asks what would have happened if Romeo and Juliet had lived to confront the playwright who made them famous. This set of performances will con-clude with Dacia Maraini’s “Crime at the Tennis Club.” Marissa Keltie directs this teeth-bared confrontation of the sexes in an unlikely setting. Julie Ball is stage manager for both bills and Jose Rivera will provide the sound. The festival will be performed in the Studio Theatre. Tickets are $5 for those with uni-versity ID. General admission is $8, $6 for youths and senior citizens.
Fariba Bogzaran, assistant pro-fessor in consciousness studies at John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley. Lanier Graham, curator of the University Art Gallery, chooses a different juror each year to main-tain variety and fresh outlooks about art. “The most important judge of your art is you,” Graham told stu-dents at the awards ceremony. He said that he would like to see more students who are producing electronic art submit their work for consideration in future exhibits. Gift certificates and cash prizes, from $50-$400, were presented to artists with work shown in the ex-hibit, including donations from pri-vate businesses, the CSUH Friends of the Arts and other donors. In all, 30 awards were presented. “I think the student exhibition generates more excitement than the faculty exhibition,” said Marie Reyes, who has a photograph displayed in the exhibit. “There was a good turn-out with lots of good pieces, and it was humbling to be surrounded by so many good artists.”
