WHICH came first, the chicken orthe African? Secondly, why did theAfrican decide to cross the roadwhen he could clearly see that thepedestrian light was red? Andfinally, while leisurely strollingacross that road – completely ignor-ing the enraged BMW driveralready late for her spa facialwaiting for him to pass – why didn’tthe African stop to fix all the pot-holes he clearly must have spottedalong the way?

Asking these and other stereo-typical questions is The Modern

African, a one-man satire starringThoko Masikini. In it he playsProfessor Wilbert Xaba, esteemedAnglophile scholar and author ofthe best-selling book How Black Is

Too Black? Performed as a lecturegiven by this ostentatious academic,the viewer is presented with whatthe Zambezi Times (according toProf Xaba) purportedly called “athorough investigation into thepost-colonial identity crisis of the21st century African”.

Artificial hair integrations(weaves) involving the sewing oftracks of hair into a woman’s scalp,dialects involving the swopping of“Rs” with “Ls” – Robert becomesLobert, for instance, and showing ablatant disregard for other people’spersonal spaces by talking at the topof their voices in taxis, everythingis fair game in Prof Xaba’s book. A

modern version of a medieval courtjester, he’s able to make severalsobering observations about oursociety through his comedicmisdirection.

While white audience membersmight find themselves unsure howto respond to hearing a black per-former joke of how Africans likefried chicken, sport large derrieresor struggle with the concept ofdemocracy, be assured that the cor-rect response here is to laugh. Bothat the preposterous stereotypesregarding Africans that continuesto persist in our society as well asover recognising those stereotypi-cal views you yourself might beguilty of at times.

Describing The Modern African

as a “TED talk dunked in a glass ofChardonnay and mixed in with areally strong Vicodin”, Masikinifurther breaks down the fourth wallby not dimming the house lights forthe first part of the performance.Appearing on stage clutching aglass of wine, he begins by directlyengaging with viewers through ref-erencing current events – such as

the University of Pretoria’s black-face incident or The Rocky Horror

Show’s return to Cape Town – inorder to dispel the notion that thisis a traditional theatrical experi-ence. No one sits in the dark andthere is no separation betweenviewer and performer. Everyone ispart of the show.

“I wanted to make fun of the per-ceptions people have had about meover the years. Perceptions like I’melitist. I’m a coconut. Or that myparents are billionaires in Malawi,”says the Malawian-born Masikiniwhen asked what inspired the pro-duction. A former UCT graduatewho previously made notableappearances in The Colonel Bird

and An Absolute Turkey under thedirection of Chris Weare, he addsthat The Modern African is aboutasking questions. “I think peopleare so comfortable with illusionsthat the truth somehow has lost itsappeal and has become somethingboring. Frightening. A source ofconflict.”

He is a delightful, witty youngactor. From the way he pours him-self a cup of tea to the way heshouts, “Catherine, next slide!”each time his character moves on toa new topic, there is an intelligenceand controlled campness to his per-formance that has him win overviewers from the moment he stepson to stage. With Prof XabaMasikini has created a characterwith longevity and with the poten-tial to reach beyond traditionaltheatre’s boundaries. I can easilysee him appearing as one of the actsat the next Cape Town ComedyFestival, for instance, or even

presenting a more focused versionof the show as part of an actualTED talk event.

As a resourceful writer with aknack for social observation, itwould be great to also hear in futurewhat Masikini has to say about theother elephants in the South

African room. White privilege.Structural apartheid. Culturalmisappropriation.

This could be the beginning of avery successful (and necessary)theatre franchise revolving aroundProf Xaba’s “research”.

An exaggerated, tongue-in-cheek

and thoroughly entertaining pro-duction, it’s inspiring to see The

Modern African end off by rollingup its sleeves in preparation for thework that awaits.

Fugard takes on therole of Oupa, a retiredSouth African teacherliving in self-imposedexile in SouthernCalifornia, and is joinedonstage by Baker,playing his grandson,Boba. During the courseof one afternoon spenttogether, Oupa andBoba leap across agenerational divide toteach and be taught.

Inspired by Fugard’srelationship with hisown grandson, Gavyn,this intimate play hasdeep autobiographicalroots.

“People have begunto ask in the past coupleof years whether mystorytelling has shiftedfrom the political to thepersonal,” Fugardmused. “My answer hasalways been – once youreach 80, the time hasarrived for a little bit ofhousecleaning. Afterall, as Oupa says at thestart of the play, ‘Thefinal landscape iswithin.’ “

Concert gets it right, jazzy in our backyardsArts writer

THANKS to the growing popularityof the Jazz in the Native Yards con-cert series, NY Arts has now addedSunday afternoons to its calendarfor jazz lovers.

At 3pm this Sunday, the youngtrumpeter Mandla Mlangeni withhis TRC (Tune Recreation Commit-tee) – Keenan Ahrends on guitar,Nicholas Williams on bass guitar,Clement Benny on drums and guestartist Bokani Dyer on piano – willkick off the first Sunday jazz chill atthe SKY Lounge 6, Ny 6 Gugulethu

(behind the Gugulethu Mall). Inkeeping with the spirit of themonth, the gig will pay tribute towomen.

Formed last year, Jazz in the

Native Yards is an initiative ofNative Yard Arts (NY Arts), a town-ship-based arts organisation thatoffers an underground scene forlive music in the welcoming ambi-ence of township bars, taverns,restaurants and even backyards.

“The Native Yards is a situationthat South African communitiesfind themselves in after almost70 years of separate development.

In 20 years of democracy, many whohave been brought up and schooledin the townships haven’t been ableto get out, mainly because of theeconomic reasons.

“The prospects for many peopleare bleak, hence the NY Arts per-formances encourage confidence,focus and purposefulness throughart,” says Koko “Cokes” Kalashe,one of the co-founders.

While live music is the initialplatform, says co-founder LuvuyoPhillip Kakaza, NY Arts also incor-porates other artistic genres suchas visual arts, theatre and dance,

with mini-festivals planned for laterin the year that will showcase allartistic expressions.

Apart from performance andexhibitions, workshops in stagecraft, sound engineering and light-ing are planned. NY Arts believesthat the arts offer a leverage for eco-nomic growth in disadvantagedcommunities.● Tickets for Sunday’s gig are R50.
