The project – ATHENS BIOWASTE

Project Duration: Sep 2011 – August 2014

Participants: NTUA, ESDKNA, City of Athens, Municipality of Kifissia, EPTA S.A.

Methods of Awareness Campaign

Wide dissemination through local press & radio Focused on citizens:▫1st Phase: Letter of the Mayor to the participating citizens together with an informational leaflet

▫2nd Phase: Distribution of home caddies/bins & bags & one page brochure

▫3rd Phase: Feedback & supply of compost

initiation of separate collection

How the project can contribute to the waste management policy in Greece?

By demonstrating to other Municipalities how a separate collection system for biowaste can be planned and implemented

By initiating composting of biowaste in the greater Athens area, taking into account that 3 composting plants are to be constructed within the next years

By evaluating the compost quality in accordance with standards such as Eco-Label correlating it with different collection systems

By producing an innovative software tool which will evaluate the carbon footprint as well as the costs of alternative biowaste collection and treatment solutions.
