OHIO ALUMNI LOVE ATHENS
Athens denitely holds a special place in my heart. I feel
like its my home away from home. Since my rst visit in
1993, I knew Athens was a special place. Its one of the
reasons that, seven years later, I chose to attend Ohio
University. And its one of the reasons I continue to visit
year after year.
Each time I return, I look forward to seeing the people
who welcomed me with open arms with I was an
undergrad. I also love discovering new things to do, new
restaurants to try and new places to stay.
Athens is denitely not a been there, done that kind of
place. To me, its more like a been there, cant wait to
come back destination.

BE YOUR OWN GUIDE
Walking Tour of Historic Uptown Athens
On this 10-block tour of Uptown Athens, youll pass many buildings and
former residencies that are of historic, human and architectural interest.
In 1797, the rst settlers traveled up the Hocking River and settled on land
that is now Athens. When Ohio University was chartered in 1804, it was
expected to attract more settlers to the area. On this tour, you will visit
buildings that were once hotels, banks, churches and merchant stores, all
in the heart of Athens. Start at the Athens County Historical Society at 65
North Court Street and begin your step back into history.
The Ridges Cemetery Nature Walk
Nature lovers and history buffs unite on the Ridges Cemetery Nature Walk.
Recently restored, the 1.3-mile nature walk winds through the grounds
of the old Athens Lunatic Asylum (now known as the Ridges). Make your
way to the top of the trail to famous Radar Hill, where the views of Athens
County are well worth the hike! Access to the Ridges Trails can be found
across from the Dairy Barn Arts Center on Dairy Lane and near the ball
eld on North Ridge Drive. While youre exploring the Ridges, stop in at
the Kennedy Museum of Art, which is free and open to the public. You can
check out the architectural beauty of the building which once served as the
administrative center for the former Athens Lunatic Asylum.
Historical Marker Tour
Established in 1805, the history of Athens County is steeped in coal, clay,
bricks and the American Pioneers. Some of this history has been recorded
on Ohio Historical Markers. They commemorate specic sites, events and
sometimes even people. There are nine Ohio Historical Society Historical
Markers and several privately erected markers in Athens County, and a
great way to explore Athens County!
The Ridges Self Guided Tour
Katherine Ziff, author of Asylum on the Hill, released an informative
guide on how to tour the Ridges. The guide takes you back through history
on a descriptive tour of the buildings that was once home to the former

The Dairy Barn ArtsCenter
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the
Dairy Barn was once a functioning part of the Athens
Lunatic Asylum. Built in 1914, the Dairy Barn wassaved from demolition by a group of local citizens, and
has grown to host over 15,000 visitors each year. The
Dairy Barns top-notch exhibitions and programs, its
reputation in the international arts community, its
close proximity to Ohio University and its picturesque
setting make it an important stop on the itinerary of
many visitors. Dont miss the Dairy Barns Gift Shop,
which carries a wide variety of local, regional and
national artists work.

2013 Quilt National
Headlining this years Arts calendar is the 2013 Quilt National
competition. This juried competition results in the nations
premiere gallery exhibit of art quilts, on view at the home of Quilt
National, the Dairy Barn Arts Center. Set in a historic dairy barn
that was once part of the Athens Lunatic Asylum grounds, the Dairy
Barn Arts Center has hosted the Quilt National Competition everyother year for the past 24 years.
Quilt National was intended to demonstrate the transformations
taking place in the world of quilting. Its purpose was then, and
still is, to carry the denition of quilting far beyond its traditional
parameters and to promote quiltmaking as what it always has been
-- an art form.
The works in a Quilt National exhibit display a reverence for the
lessons taught by the makers of the heritage quilts. Many of the
works hold fast to the traditional methods of piecing and patching.
At the same time, however, the Quilt National artist is intriguedby the challenge of expanding the boundaries of traditional quilt-
making by utilizing the newest materials and technologies. These
innovative works generate strong emotional responses in the viewer
while at the same time fullling the creative need of the artist to
make a totally individual statement.
The 18th biennial juried exhibition of contemporary art quilts
will be on view at the Dairy Barn Arts Center May 24 through
September 2, 2013.

Athens County GeoTrails
What better way to discover the hidden gems in Athens County than to
complete our GeoTrails? With this popular pastime on the rise, weve
launched a brand-new geocaching trail every summer. Our three active
geotrails are the rst trails formed in Ohio and the only fully handicap-
accessible trail in the nation! And if thats not enough incentive, well
even give you a custom-minted GeoCoin when you complete the AthensCounty History GeoTrail! For your convenience, the Holiday Inn Express
in Athens has a special discounted rate just for geocaching. All you have
to do is mention geocache to get the discounted rate.
Heres what a fellow Geocacher has said about our trail:
Spent the day caching on the Athens Geotrail. I had a great time, and
saw many wonderful sights. The people were so friendly. At the dam
near Burr Oak, I met a man from the Army Corps of Engineers, who told
me about all the trails and the dam. My favorite was Chris, the Pawpaw
man, who I was so excited to talk to, but also in a rush because the sun
was going down. Thanks to everyone who helped put this trail together,
it was a great experience! I took from it many memories and many
places that I want to return to! - SpeedCity
