Cross Country Overall Team Finish: 1st in LIS, 2nd in StatesHead Coach: Dave Bloor Assistant Coaches: Jim Hicks, Jon Molz, & Ann TrippCaptains: Mary Frances Buoyer, Taylor Clevinger, Barrett Haynes

2010 was going to be a challenging year for the St. Catherine’s Cross Country team. We only had two of our top 5 runners back – Ali Doswell and Taylor Clevinger. But those two were about as reliable as you can find. We just had to find 3 more to make up a scoring team of 5 runners. Keeilah Moseley showed great promise last year as a 7th grader and she ended out being our strong #3 runner. Newcomer sisters, Rosemary and Annabel O’Hagan, were very impressive in our early season workouts and became our #4 and #5 runners. Randall Ackerly (a good track runner who we finally convinced to try cross country) and Whitney Busch (a much improved runner over last year) gave us the depth to make us a formidable force in cross country. The team was captained by Taylor Clevinger, Barrett Haynes, and Mary Frances Buoyer. This was Mary Frances’ 7th year in cross country and Barrett’s 6th year so we had plenty of experience to lead us. Taylor, in her 2nd year, was just plain fast. The improvement every runner showed throughout the season paid off with the program’s 21st LIS Championship.

Varsity Field Hockey Overall Team Record: 20-1-2 LIS Record: 7-0-1Head Coach: Don Warner Assistant Coaches: Aubrey Lawrence, & Corbin Dunlap Captains: Anna Sauer, Peyton Smith, Helen Warner

The Varsity Field hockey team had a successful fall season in 2010 resulting in the program’s 2nd LIS Championship and 3rd VIS State Championship. All 26 players earned a start during our championship run. We followed up an undefeated LIS regular season with a 3-0 win over Collegiate in the LIS finals. One week later we followed up with a dramatic 5-2 win in the State Finals, coming back from a 2-goal deficit to roll over Norfolk Academy. Our regular season LIS record was 5-0-1, and we finished 20-1-2 overall. Individual accolades include: All LIS: Amanda Kim, Anna Sauer, Peyton Smith, Kali Vicars, Helen Warner, All-State Tournament Team: Kaki Jennison, Peyton Smith, and State Tournament MVP Emma MacLeod, D1 All-State Team: Amanda Kim, Helen Warner, and Kali Vicars- State Player of the Year, with (hopefully) some Richmond Times Dispatch All Met selections to follow.

Junior Varsity Field Hockey Overall Team Record: 14-0-2Head Coach: Susan Taliaferro Assistant Coaches: Holly Moreland & Molly Meem Captains: Mary Elizabeth Moore & Sally Smith

Although the St. Catherine's JV field hockey team was rather a young team with 16 freshmen, five sophomores and one junior goalkeeper, the team was extremely talented and successful. The Saints finished their season with a 14-0-2 record, the first time the team has gone undefeated in many years. We tallied a total of 35 goals for the season, 14 assists and only 5 goals against. The Saints averaged just over two goals per game. There were ten different goal scorers and many of the goals came off of penalty corners. Sophomore Sally Smith scored ten of the goals accompanied by freshmen Sasha Walmsley who had nine goals. The Saints took 128 shots on goal for the season and earned 142 corners which on average comes out to eight shots per game and nine corners per game. This was an outstanding hockey team that got better every day. Every player in this team contributed to our success and it was always fun and exciting to watch them play.

Middle School A Field Hockey Overall Team Record: 9-2-1Head Coach: Linda Southworth Assistant Coaches: Alexandra Eagan & Charlotte CharltonCaptains: BB Vozenilek, Libbie Warner

The Middle School “A” field hockey team began the season with three returning players from the 2009 team. Mariah Merhige, BB Vozenilek, and Libbie Warner formed a strong nucleus for the 2010 team and brought strong skills and capable leadership to the young team. Each player demonstrated a strong work ethic and a desire to learn. With every game, the team improved in their tactical understanding and began to work together as a unit in order to find success. Our leading scorers were Mariah Merhige, BB Vozenilek, Haley Tucker, and 7th grader Carmen Manganello. Co-captains Libbie Warner and BB Vozenilek anchored our defense along with our 7th grade goalie, Haley Gullquist, who had 38 saves for the season. The team posted 7 shut-outs and ended the season with a record of 9 wins, 2 losses (both to J.V. teams), and 1 tie.

Middle School B Field Hockey Overall Team Record: 6-2-1Head Coach: Page Farmer Assistant Coach: Shelby KingsleyCaptains: Katherine Custer, Hollyn Schoeffler, Frances Tyler

The Middle School B field hockey team had an outstanding season. With an overall record of 6-2-1 the girls worked hard in practice and even harder in games. The girls not only improved individually, but they really came together as a team to be reckoned with. The coaches are proud of the team’s effort and progress. The solid foundation of skills and fitness should pay off next season. We hope to see everyone out next fall!

7th Grade Field Hockey Overall Team Record: 4-2-3Head Coach: Kerry Sallee Assistant Coach: Gina Gordon

The St. Catherine’s 7th grade field hockey team enjoyed a fun and exciting season marked with great competition and positive individual, as well as team improvement! With our special team mantra, “D 2 S 3" , the girls made it their mission to always give 100% and leave everything on the field. Each girl made contributions to the team effort. Additionally, and most importantly the girls proved to be examples of sportsmanship– showing maturity beyond their middle school years while always motivating and supporting the team.

With an overall season record of 4-2-3 (w-l-t), the season opened with a big win against Millwood that set the bar high for practices and games to come. In the middle of the season, the girls battled hard against STAB, traveling to Charlottesville for a redemption game on the turf where they played their hearts out. Battling rain, game delays, and postponements the girls never lost focus and captured the ever sought after win against Collegiate. Often asking for extra practice, this group of girls showed their passion and love for the game throughout the season – any coach’s dream! What a truly fun and exciting season we had. Expect to see great things from everyone on this team in the future!

Varsity Tennis Overall Team Record: 18-2 LIS Record: 9-1Head Coach: Richard Peyton Assistant Coach: Pontus HiortCaptains: Anne Peyton Leitch, Callie Whitlock

Following three consecutive second place finishes in the state tournament, the St. Catherine’s varsity tennis team was finally able to capture its first state championship. The girls capped yet another very successful season with a dramatic win against Collegiate in the state finals. During the regular season, the Saints showed time and time again how balanced and deep the team was. Despite losing our number two and three players from last year, the team stormed through the regular season with only one loss, a 5-4 decision on the 2nd rotation of league play against Collegiate. Because of this, the team knew going into the LIS Championship that it was going to be a close contest. After several days of good tennis, the LIS crown went to Collegiate by virtue of one single point. However, we did not let this setback deter our state tournament hopes. After a first round victory against Bishop Ireton, we eliminated a strong Potomac team in the semi-final, which set the stage for yet another showdown with the Cougars. In an almost eerily similar match to last year’s final, it came down to the very last doubles match. The two freshmen Caroline Jones and Charlotte Bemiss were able to secure the state championship after a dramatic tiebreak. All of the girls on the team should be commended for a fantastic year, but we would be amiss if we did not recognize the immense contributions of seniors Callie Whitlock and Anne Peyton Leitch who have been integral members of this team for many years. Although they will be missed next year, the team still has a strong core of returning players, so the future still looks bright for Saints tennis.

JV Tennis Overall Team Record: 9-3Head Coach: Chip Collingwood Assistant Coaches: Josh Hartman & Laurie MarshalekCaptains: Garland Kughn & Katherine Maloney

The JV tennis program continued its winning ways with a highly successful 9-3 2010 season. Highlighting the season was a convincing road win against a talented Norfolk Academy squad and a late season victory over St. Stephen’s/ St. Agnes. Both wins typified the best qualities of this year’s Saints roster as they were true team victories that featured equal measures of singles and doubles success. A cohesive group from the outset, this team, ranging in ages from 7th grade to high school junior, embodied the very best of St. Catherine’s athletics and through their tireless efforts improved upon their already impressive talents.

Varsity Volleyball Overall Team Record: 18-3 LIS Record: 15-0Head Coach: Anna Prillaman Assistant Coach: Kim Harris Captains: Catharine Cain, Audrey Fain

St. Catherine’s Varsity Volleyball finished off a memorable season with an 18-3 overall record, a perfect LIS record, St. Catherine’s first ever LIS Championship, and a state berth for the first time in program history. Senior captains Catharine Cain and Audrey Fain led the Saints through each hard fought match. The season was highlighted by a dramatic four set win over arch rival Collegiate in the LIS tournament final in front of a packed house in the Kenny Center. It was an amazing day for Saints volleyball! It is worth noting that Catharine and Audrey began their volleyball careers in 7th grade when only 5 girls came out for the team. This may be where their leadership and determination began to grow, they recruited enough friends for St. Catherine’s to have its first MS team. Now the program fields 3 full Middle School teams every year.

JV Volleyball Overall Team Record: 13-4Head Coach: Quinn Simmons Assistant Coach: Joe Schinsky Captains: Hayley Foster, Kyle Johns, Emily Vaeth

This was an outstanding season for the St. Catherine’s JV volleyball team. Comprised of 14 talented girls, we finished our season with a 13-4 record. Working hard to accomplish our season long goals of individual improvement, communication on and off the court, having a winning record, and playing like a team, these girls worked extremely hard to accomplish these goals. These efforts should translate into continued strength at the varsity level. The coaches are proud of the team’s success and the girls should be proud of their success as well!

Middle School “A” Volleyball Overall Team Record: 6-6Head Coach: Lassiter Stone Assistant Coach: Jennifer McIntosh Captains: Kristen Cashwell, Mary Kate Crook

The Middle School "A" Volleyball Team had a very successful and very exciting fall season!! The team, made up of 8th graders and two 7th graders, was led by captains Mary Kate Crook and Kristen Cashwell. Anyone who witnessed any of our games this season would agree that this team was such a joy to watch and to cheer for as they fought for every single point in every game. The improvement they showed throughout the season was impressive. Even when playing against high school teams, this group of young ladies stepped up to the challenge and came ready to play!!Veteran players Elise Fuller, Celia Stone, Townley Neal and Luly Dickinson showed great skill and improvement until the very last point each game. Tina Dickey, Madison Wilkinson, and Bri Miller were new to the sport, but by the 2nd game, it certainly did not seem that way! Bri, Townley, Virginia Fralin and Kristin Cashwell dominated at the net with blocking and hitting. And who can forget the setters!! Alexandra Daniel, Mary Kate, and Celia rocked the court with fast hands, calm nerves, and a wonderful ability to run the game. Also, Alexandra could not be stopped when it came to her serving. We are so very proud of all of them. With a 6-6 record and a 3rd place finish in the Middle School Tournament, the MS A team had an awesome season!Thank you to all of our amazing parents for your support and LOUD cheering section! To all of our great girls, don't forget, "Sign Out" and SLAP THE FLOOR!!!.

Middle School “B” Volleyball Overall Team Record: 2-7Head Coach: Steve Cambisios Assistant Coach: Shelley Campbell

Middle School “B” Volleyball claimed its own identity from the first practice. The team renamed itself “Team Soup” in honor of Coach Shelly Campbell. With many first year players, the team started learning the basics and played most matches against more experienced Middle School teams. After losing the first five matches, Team Soup recommitted itself and showed tremendous improvement winning two of the last four matches. While the team had a losing record, everyone who watched their progress this year has commented upon the teamwork and improvement that they displayed on the court. Though the record may not show it, they had a winning season.

7th Grade Volleyball Overall Team Record: 7-2Head Coach: Gage Harter Assistant Coach: Virginia Satterfield Captains: Maddie Gunter & Katie Turner

The Seventh Grade “A” team finished an impressive season with a 7-2 record. Each player improved immensely and had a great time learning the game. An example of the team’s progress happened during the last match of the season. The team had just won the first game of the match, but the players were not satisfied as they huddled before the second game. Each player acknowledged that the team had not given its best effort, and win or lose, that was what mattered the most. They went on to play harder and with more determination and effort in the second game to end the season on a high note. Congratulations Seventh Grade “A” team!
