In addition to our supporters featured in this Dragon Community Review, we’d like to thank the following people that gave their time, talents and treasures to help KAPS.

Katherine Anne Porter School, or KAPS, is a free, charter, public high school located in Wimberley, Texas.KAPS is different from traditional high schools in many ways. As an open-enrollment charter, we bring together young people from towns like Blanco, Wimberley, Dripping Springs, Canyon Lake, San Marcos, New Braunfels, and Austin. Students come to KAPS for many reasons including smaller classes, alternative courses and an individualized approach to education.

Our students don’t always “fit the mold.” At KAPS, we embrace differences. Our music and fine arts program is outstanding. Many of our students are gifted musicians and artists, and love to share their talents. Our school looks different, too. We invite you to come by, step inside KAPS to visit and see for yourself the beautiful murals and art adorning our walls.

We have a caring team of highly qualified teachers and staff who strive to make the school — and every student in it — a success.

Meet OurPrincipalDr. Erin Flynn

Dear KAPS Community,I am honored and excited to take on the position of Principal for the Katherine Anne Porter School. I have served and worked for the KAPS community for the past three years as mentor, teacher, and the English Department Head. I have found a home within these well-loved, muraled walls and have both watched and contributed to the growth of this wonderful institution. I feel uniquely situated to serve as a leader of our school.I believe that there are many legitimate avenues a student can take after high school graduation. When a student has the choice to pursue an advanced degree in Higher Education, to become a car mechanic, to join the workforce, or to travel the world creating art, then we have done our jobs as educators. Our job is to make available multiple options for students, within a viable instructional framework, to make their own life decisions. It is this philosophy that pushes me to provide the academic excellence, cre-ative freedom, and life skills necessary for our students to make their own optimal, post- graduation, individual choice. I have witnessed this same desire in many of my colleagues for

our students. I want the opportunity to work together with my colleagues, students, and parents and lead us further into this vision by cultivating and retaining quality teachers, increasing student ownership of their educa-tion and school community, and developing our relationships with the communities we serveAs Principal, I would like to expand our Restorative program to our faculty, parents, and community at large. It is an essential tool for both relationship building and conflict resolution. Restorative Discipline is a prevention-oriented approach that fosters accountability and amends-making to resolve school conflict. We have been using this program through the use of circles in our classrooms, mentor groups, and staffings. This practice builds trust, transparency, and ownership; my goal is to increase the fre- quency of practice within our current discipline model. Already our school is beginning to get the recognition it deserves for being a compassionate, safe space for students and teachers alike. I want Katherine Anne Porter to shine as the example of Restorative Practice.

“As Principal, I would like to expand our Restorative program

to our faculty, parents, and community at large.”

‘I AM KAPS’…. When I first saw the KAPS slogan I thought, how cool that this community takes such ownership and pride of their school. Our teachers, parents, students, and administration all feel ownership of what we have built, as we should. I have learned from the board perspective that building and sustaining a char-ter school isn’t an easy task. We provide something standard public schools cannot: smaller student- to-teacher ratios, project-based learning, restorative justice programs, bus transportation reaching across seven counties, and all the while, we do it without facilities funding from the state. For now, while we push for legislation to be passed making state funding fair and equitable for charter schools, this is our story. We are the many faces and many voices that have built KAPS; our story and our pride radiating on the inside… need to shine on the outside. Since serving on the KAPS board ten years ago, I have relished the thought of a new facade for the school; a face to the community that better represents our high school and what we offer. Focusing on what was happening on the inside of KAPS was and still is, of course, the priority, so year after year the face of the school has been left without much improvement. This is changing for us in October, however, because believe it or not - I met a guy in the river! Talking about KAPS in the Blanco River opened a door for us with KVUE Cares and created an opportunity to apply for a grant. I have learned that, when opportunities like that present themselves, you leap.

We are excited to be updating the facade of our building this fall, starting with our KVUE workday on October 22nd. We will be adding signage and contrast to our building to break up the long flat facade and we will be creating a berm in the middle of our parking lot to help with flooding issues. By adding a wooden screen wall on top of our concrete stem wall, we will gain a new porch space in the front as well as address the safety issue of the wall itself. You will see more plants and soil being brought in, and we will remove our extra dumpsters, creating a more open, green and viable parking lot. We are also working to address runoff issues and looking at re-grading the asphalt to prevent further flooding in the foremost classrooms. We are so very grateful to KVUE Cares for this grant and to have the opportunity to share with the commu-nity of Wimberley our true pride and our whole story.

Let it shine!

We first met KAPS through Amy Crowell. She wanted to connect students with local businesses and was purchasing D’s Roastery coffee through Bountiful Sprout, an online farmers’ market. Her Entrepre- neurship class was writing Business Plans and visited the Roast House on a field trip. We support the KAPS mission to educate and empower students with knowledge, skills, and practices. Darrell showed students the coffee process from plant to cup and how to roast from light to dark. He described what a food manufacturer does and he explained the importance of quality control. Sandy showed which skills and personalities are suited for the roles of manager, manufacturer, driver, sales- person, website designer, and accountant. We discussed the pros and cons of owning your own business versus working for a corporation, as well as laws and business ethics. We talked about salary, how to increase profits, and if owning your own business is worth it. Texas Reality Check is a great resource for all students wondering, “How much money will I need to support my lifestyle?” and “How much money do people make in certain careers?”. Many students go to college directly after high school and switch majors multiple times without any direc-tion. We believe an education is more beneficial once students know themselves and which careers they enjoy. This is why communication with parents, career-matching assessments, internships, summer jobs, and connections with local businesses are vital.

We have many German friends who completed a ‘gap year’ and volunteered internationally or worked as teenagers before committing to a university. They were able to develop skills, ask questions, and observe professionals in order to make informed decisions. We volunteered alongside several Germans and we became interested in coffee while living in the Dominican Republic for two years. After returning to Texas, Darrell found a job in manufacturing but disliked the commute to Austin. He wanted to spend more time with the family and baby Isabella. Wimberley is an inspiring community because many people here have left comfortable jobs, take the risk involved with becoming entrepreneurs, and create businesses where the entire family participates. Sandy is a Spanish teacher, and we love to support schools for Career Day, Teacher Appreciation in May, field trips, or a coffee fundraiser. Let us know if you have an idea or need coffee for a special event. We have been in business since National Coffee Day on September 29, 2015. You can find D’s coffee at ten locations around Wimberley, including Wednesday Farmers’ Market, and Market Days. We also provide local delivery to your home. Visit dsroastery.com for our menu and educate yourself about coffee, the world, health benefits, and composting! We have fun gifts like mugs, tumblers, soap, gift baskets, and coffee rub for grilling if you follow us on Instagram or Facebook.

Looking for the Perfect Placein Central Texas?Consider yourself lucky if you live in Central Texas. What a great part of the state. I love the Hill Country, but especially my town, Wimberley. It’s the home of beautiful hills, trees, rivers, and streams. You can catch a movie at the Corral Theatre, swim at Jacob’s Well or Blue Hole, see live music at Inoz’ or Cypress Creek Cafe, or catch a play at the Wimberley Playhouse or the EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens. It’s even great to simply chill out and look at the stars. Wimberley is also the home of the Katherine Ann Porter School - a great place to foster the creative spirits of kids who are allowed to be themselves while getting a first-class education. As the father of three kids who attend KAPS, I am proud to be part of that vibrant community, and serve as a member of the KAPS Board of Trustees.I moved to the Wimberley a little over two years ago, and have gradually been expanding my business as a residential Realtor® in Hays and surrounding counties. I work with Realty Austin, and you may have noticed more and more of ours yard signs showing up throughout the area. Realty Austin is an amazing company to work with because it’s such a positive and forward-thinking group of people with big hearts. Since 2010, Realty Austin’s agents have volunteered over 9,000 hours, donated over $600,000 of their commissions, and raised over $100,000 from industry partners to support Habitat for Humanity, Foundation Communities, Austin Children’s Shelter, and other charitable organizations. I love serving my clients, whether it’s helping them to buy or sell a home, land, vacation rental, condominium, or other residential real estate. It’s always such a pleasure to meet new people, and to make deals happen. In case you haven’t noticed, it’s a great time to invest in real estate. Interest rates have been at a record low for a few years, while property values throughout Central Texas have been increasing steadily. As of late October 2016, just over 200 residences have sold this year in the 78676 zip code (Wimberley). The prices range from $39,000 to almost $8 million. Just over 80 vacant lots of sizes varying from 1/10th of an acre to 50 acres sold to date, with a range of $6,000 to $750,000. In other words, there’s something out there for just about anyone who’s looking to invest in real estate.

If you’d like to learn more about buying or selling real estate in Wimberley or beyond, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

What started out as a four-year-old going to a week-long summer day camp, has, eleven years later, turned into a passionate nationally ranked equestrian, the best thing to keep a teen girl focused and out of trouble, driven, and excelling through life.Alexandra Dishman, half of the dynamic duo known fondly as “Team Baby Bear,” and her series of six horses she has owned--and many more trained and com- peted with through the past eleven years--have all faithfully trained at Hunters Chase Farms on the east edge of Wimberley towards Driftwood, under Mary Laura Doherty and Katherine Deichmann. It all began when Alexandra attended a five-day day camp at HCF as a four-year-old. She requested to have a ‘horse-themed birthday party’ at the farm a month later, then requested one day a week lessons for her fifth birthday present, and now rides and trains there upwards of twenty hours a week, year round, and

as much as forty-plus hours a week in competition weeks.Through the journeys of Team Baby Bear, there have been two summers of USHJA (United States Hunter Jumper Association), Olympian trained EAP (Emerging Athlete Program) clinics she qualified for and attended (as the youngest participant in the Nation, ever), and three summers of qualifying for National Jumper Finals that culminated in attending and competing in two, resulting in a handful of wins in the summer of 2015. This road was never intended, it just kinda happened as a beautiful story and the journey unfolded along the way. ‘Team Baby Bear’ became a brand name that resulted in the acquisition of seventeen sponsors all over the nation and Canada to help in the support and road to National Finals. The three years of ‘point chasing’ to become #1 in the state of Texas and the Zone 7 (which is Texas and five southern states) meant lots of time on the road for Alexandra, her horses and her mother, Sara Dishman. Life on the road came with the challenge of keeping up with schoolwork, as she has never been a

home-schooled student. However, a partnership and the appreciation of the driven student Alex is in the equestrian arena, also spilled over to academics with her teachers and administrators at the two schools she has attended supporting her equestrian journey. Ten years at Wimberley Montessori School, and now her second year at KAPS, have proven to be the perfect match for also accomplishing dreams and goals outside the classroom. Alexandra finished her fresh-man year with a 4.66 gpa, and a ranking of #1 in her freshman class. There was a deep and special connection, noticed very early, between Alexandra and the beloved horses she encountered. Luckily for her, this has been able to develop into not only her sport, but her passion and a release from all stressors of life--a place to escape to. Alexandra was driven to excel in and perfect her chosen path with her equine partners through the years. In the English genre of the equestrian world, Alexandra initially showed and competed in the Hunter Division. However, through time, she soon

discovered the fast-paced and adrenaline-fueled Jumper Division was her calling. In her freshman year, she was also named a Varsity High School Equestrian Athlete by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF). In the fall of 2015, one of her horses, Nala, was shipped to President of USHJA Mary Babick’s farm in New Jersey, where she periodically goes to train with the two of them. Alexandra has trained and worked with Mary Babick through the past few years in the USHJA EAP programs and at her farm in New Jersey.Hunters Chase Farms, here in the community of Wimberley and Driftwood, offers lessons and trail rides from the beginner level to the professional level and everything in between. Additionally, HCF is the home of the Texas State Equestrian Team, coached by Katherine Deichmann. To continue to follow the journey and the story of Team Baby Bear, go to their community Facebook page, named accordingly.

She hopes to shape the lives of her students, both as a mentor and a role model of her own values. Just as KAPS aims to develop students academically, we work to nurture our students’ passions and individuality while encouraging them to reach their full potential in riding. We believe in supporting the Wimberley community and in supporting organizations that share our values of respect, passion for learning, individuality, and collaboration, so KAPS was a natural fit.

This is our fifth year as a KAPS family. My oldest daughter Bryanna Newton graduated last year, and is now attending Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. She was awarded an academic scholarship and she received several grants, which made college possible for her. Thank you, KAPS! Currently, my youngest daughter Brishen Newton is a sophomore, and has found KAPS to be a perfect fit after home- schooling for eight years, attending Montessori, and a Waldorf school. We love living between New Braunfels and Canyon Lake. It is a blessing that the bus stop is fifteen minutes from our home -- beautiful drive in the Texas Hill Country every day!I have a personal Shiatsu massage practice, I teach yoga classes, and I offer seasonal healing retreats that incorporate produce from my organic garden or local farmers. Teaching others how to heal themselves is my passion!

Learning how to heal yourself. Exercise regularly, eat foods in season -- organic if possible -- and reduce stress. Shiatsu massage allows a release of tension so healing can flow. In a session, the body is the guide, revealing what it needs:*Working directly on pressure points stimulates balance for internal organs.*As the pressure point is released, muscles relax.* Pressing the meridian (energy) channels then sedates the central nervous system. This balancing combina-tion creates inner peace while boosting the immune system. After 23 years of working with Shiatsu clients and prac-ticing yoga, the idea came to combine Shiatsu massage and yoga. My yoga classes combine the benefits of Shiatsu massage with yoga asana (postures), breath work, and positive affirmations to stimulate physical and mental health. As you move through each asana, you learn to apply pressure to your own acupressure pointsShiatsu and Atsu Yoga each work well separately. Together, they form a natural and easy self-care system that can make a difference in how you feel every day. If you would like, join my next Seasonal Retreat or one of my weekly yoga classes.

Rebekah Satyavati Newton studied Aikido, Macro- biotics (foods that heal), Feng Shui and Shiatsu while living in Japan; she also worked in a healing center to gain hands-on experience in applying those skills. She now offers Healing Day Retreats for each Season of the year. Each season affects our body and we can use that time to heal. In a retreat you learn which pressure points to use to nourish the organs of the season through movement, toning, and healing foods. Bringing balance to the physical body in turn balances emotions, helping us to act in life instead of react. It is my experience that our emotions create our health. If we all work on ourselves, and then work together, the world can be a much more peaceful place.

“Exercise regularly, eat foods in season, and reduce stress.”

Jesse Huth and his family have been associated with KAPS since 2002, when Jesse first donated chickens and photography equipment to the school and gave presentations on raising chickens to KAPS classes. As a homeschool student from age 5-17, we align with the KAPS mission “...to educate and empower... students with the knowledge, skills and habits to be successful and compassionate in school and in life.” Jesse encour-ages all students to pursue their individual talents and passions and stay true to themselves, and not worry about “fitting the mold”.Jesse, owner of Huth Avian Services, is a local bird expert, both in the form of chickens and wild birds. He began asking for chickens at the age of three, even though his parents knew nothing about raising them. By age six, he had his first flock.... by age nine he was featured on Texas Country Reporter and dubbed “Chicken Boy” and now has 22 years of chicken experience. He earned his B.S. in Poultry Science and his M.S. in Poultry Welfare & Behavior, both from Texas A&M Univ. As a Poultry Scientist he conducts expert consultations for those in need of guidance in raising Backyard or Commercial chicken flocks. He is also available to give Presentations for a variety of programs, classes, organizations, feed stores and

For the KAPS Yearbook Class, the yearbook we make is more than just an obligatory part of the high school experience. To us, it’s an exciting project that allows for us to express ourselves and create a time capsule of sorts for our peers. The yearbook class shows us the ins and outs of publishing, design, and editing. We are able to learn so much from our experiences that will easily translate into valuable skills for life after graduation. We manage schedules, plan and organize a layout, and create something that we get to share with the whole school! The Yearbook Staff is already hard at work this year to bring KAPS the best yearbook ever! We’ve already been busy, covering school events and working with software to create a yearbook layout! From the Taco Night Open House to the Freshman Retreat, we’ve been there, with a camera in hand. We hope that everyone is as excited as we are about the 2016-2017 yearbook, which will be out in the spring!

To truly understand Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union, you have to go back to the credit union’s begin-nings, to the foundation that started with little more than $45, nine members and a mission to improve people’s economic well-being. The credit union was the vision of military and civilian personnel who were looking for an institution that could be trusted, a financial union that would offer members service without taking advantage of their welfare. On Sept. 26, 1952, in a small corner of South Central Texas, the group of nine took their finances into their own hands, each depositing $5 and signing the application for a charter, establishing the credit union. A few weeks later on Oct. 6, 1952, the charter was approved by the Bureau of Federal Credit Unions, creating what was then known as Randolph Federal Credit Union – Brooks was later added to the name after expanding to Brooks Air Force Base. The beginning was challenging, albeit fruitful, gaining hundreds of members from Randolph Air Force Base and relying heavily on volunteer work from military and civilian workers. Just a year into RBFCU’s estab-lishment, the credit union was hit with tragedy. A fire ripped through the headquarters, nearly toppling the credit union and everything it set out to accomplish. RBFCU lost nearly all its files and had to rely on members’ copies of paperwork to reestablish accounts. The early years of RBFCU were met with obstacles, but the credit union and its employees showed resiliency in the face of adversity and rebounded. Just six years after the devastating fire, RBFCU reached it first $1 million in assets, and by 1971 that number sky- rocketed to $31 million and over 20,000 members. The word was out and membership was growing at an exponential rate.

Today, RBFCU has over $7 billion in assets and 55 branches but our goal is still the same; we put our members and the community first. Our goal is to put people’s lives and their financial well-being before all else. RBFCU is committed to helping others by donating to schools and various charities around Central Texas, including donations to more than 150 schools and universities in 2016. RBFCU consistently ranked among the top credit unions in Texas and the country. Our members and their families come first. Whether that means working to put a roof over a family’s head or help them get to work and children to school, we want our members to come to us with their needs. We pride ourselves in offering low-interest auto loans and complete care when it comes to buying a new vehicle. RBFCU also provides members with a one-stop shop for all home buying needs. We also want to help plan your future. We have financial advisors who can help set up your retirement and point you in the right direction when it comes to investments. RBFCU offers assistance with your child’s education through our savings options. We also give back. Since 2007, we have given more than $60 million in cash-back rewards to our members.RBFCU has come a long way from the beginnings that started with 10-foot by 10-foot office space, but one thing that has always stayed the same is our commit-ment to you. Our dedication to our members and to service is what keeps RBFCU at the forefront of credit unions around the country, and it will be what keeps us growing for years to come.

My name is Jennifer Sabatier. I am the mother of five children, two of whom have attended Katherine Anne Porter School. We felt instantly a part of the KAPS family when Cait began her freshman year in 2013. Having our daughter Summer there as a freshman this year, we recognize the many ways the teachers, administrators, and all the staff support the students and make KAPS a wonderful place. The school nour-ishes a culture of mutual respect between and among the students, faculty, and staff. There is room for each person to be unique, and all are welcome. We also really love to see the students have opportunities to explore their interests and take on leadership roles in their school community. We look forward to supporting Katherine Anne Porter School, its students and staff as they continue educating and enriching the lives of youth. For over twenty years, I have worked in the nonprofit sector. Eleven of those years have been dedicated to nonprofit business development. I have worked as a direct service provider for various social service orga-nizations including those providing programs in the areas of mental health, homeless youth, HIV/AIDS education, arts education, and youth mentoring. I have also served several nonprofit organizations as a board member. In 2003, I began my own company, NewBloomz, drawing on my experiences in the nonprofit social service and development arenas. NewBloomz has provided services that explore and develop new possi-bilities and potentials for my client organizations. People inspire me, especially those who open their hearts and often their homes to me, and tell me their stories of challenge, trauma, and survival. The magic, wisdom, and healing that happens when individuals

come together for a common purpose continues to impress and amaze me. NewBloomz’ current services are a response to those who have inspired me, and a reflection of my own renewal.NewBloomz currently provides opportunities for new growth and fulfilling potentials through Grief Recovery & Professional Facilitation services. Grief Recovery services are offered to individuals seeking healing from the pain of loss. We begin by establishing a safe, confidential, nonjudgmental environment. We examine the more than forty types of loss a person can experience in a lifetime. Regard-less of how recent or long ago your loss or losses occurred, it is possible to let go of the pain. The Grief Recovery process is an action-based program that involves the reading and writing assignments outlined in The Grief Recovery Handbook – 20th Anniversary Expanded Edition. NewBloomz Grief Recovery offers emotional sup-port, and just intellectual explanations. Our program

provides education, but more importantly it provides an opportunity to address your broken heart.Professional Facilitation services include workshops for various nonprofit boards and staff, helping them re-craft their organization’s mission and vision, assess their resources and build capacity, and reinvent their organization, roles, and responsibilities to better serve their clients. With experiences of training volunteers, educating youth, and facilitating diverse community groups toward common purposes, I currently offer

professional facilitation tailored to the specific needs of a variety of groups such as nonprofits, for-profits, professional groups, and community collectives.

Dragon Community Review - Fall 201630

Flood relief, volunteer/donations management, and youth development in the form of the summer program are just a few ways that Texas Conservation Corps at American Youthworks has interacted with the Katherine Anne Porter School and the Wimberley community. Texas Conservation Corps, an AmeriCorps program, offers service terms to 17 to 28 year olds that can range from a summer term to a year long term. The areas of service include trail work, disaster work, and habitat restoration on public land. TxCC’s Disaster Response

Morgan Howard, KAPS graduate of 2015 and TxCC crew member, said “It means starting off right out of high school with a job that gives me a hands-on experience with things and places I love. It means helping the community and learning things about myself at the same time.” when asked what a TxCC term of service meant to her.

Team served Wimberley in response to the Memorial Day Floods of 2015 by providing assistance in the field and in the Volunteer Reception Center. That same year, TxCC had its first KAPS summer youth crew con-sisting of recent graduates and incoming juniors and seniors from KAPS. Seven applicants were selected from KAPS to serve their community by complet-ing conservation projects in the counties of Hays and Travis. Examples of these conservation projects are planting native trees, removing invasive species, performing trail work, and public land improvement. For this past summer, TxCC recruited more students and recent graduates from KAPS for the summer youth crew. Projects included habitat restoration at the Austin Metropolitan Parks, the installation of cedar railings for Travis County Parks, and trail work at Cooper Lake State Park. Each summer term consists of two camping trips that are usually a week long. This

past summer’s crew went to Cooper Lake State Park and Brazos Bend State Park. Most of the TxCC youth participants are interested in learning more about the career opportunities in the field of conservation. TxCC’s project partners include the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, and local parks departments. With these part-nerships, TxCC is able to give its crew members a close look at what it would be like to work for these organizations. Texas Conservation Corps and KAPS plan to keep up the tradition of preparing students for the future while giving them a chance to enjoy the outdoors.
