Sun 30 Dec HOLY FAMILY 1 Samuel 1:20-22.24-28; Psalm 84; Luke 2:41-52 Today's Gospel presents a family in crisis, running for their lives, fleeing to a foreign country… a scenario we know all too well in Africa. God commands us to welcome the stranger (even as if they were the Holy Family). Sat 29 Dec (St Thomas Becket, BM) 1 John 2:3-11; Psalm 96; Luke 2:22-35 God often chooses those who are neither powerful nor influential to lead or show the way. In today's Gospel, Anna and Simeon point the way to the light. God chooses each of us, in our own small ways, to do the same today. Fri 28 Dec HOLY INNOCENTS, Ms 1 John 1:5–2:2; Psalm 124; Matthew 2:13-18 Today we are reminded of the sanctity of life, and we remember and hold in prayer the many children who suffer because of the malice and indifference of those in positions of power, authority and influence. Thu 27 Dec ST JOHN, AE 1 John 1:1-4; Psalm 97; John 20:2-8 The fragility of our era is that we don’t believe that there is a chance for redemption; for a hand to raise us up; for an embrace to save, forgive, flood with love; to put us back on our feet. We need mercy. Wed 26 Dec ST STEPHEN, 1ST MARTYR Acts 6:8-10; 7:54-59; Psalm 31; Matthew 10:17-22 “Lord Jesus, recieve my spirit." These last words of St Stephen are a beautiful expression of his unwavering faith. We know not the time nor the hour when we might be called upon to pray these ‘famous last words'. Tue 25 Dec NATIVITY OF CHRIST Isaiah 52:7-10; Psalm 98; John 1:1-18 Looking beyond the childhood wonder and family gatherings, beyond the lights and the celebrations, let us sit for a moment in silence – listening. In the stillness of our hearts, may the newborn child come. May the love, joy and peace of the Christmas Season remain with you and your loved-ones throughout the coming year, from all of us at RPP A GAIN IN today’s Gospel, as in all the Gospels for this Advent, John the Baptist is a central figure. Perhaps we could call John the model of an Advent person. So often, thanks to the secular world which wishes to hurry us onward to the fun of Christmas, we find Advent an uncomfortable time. We want to hurry quickly to the child in the manger and forget about repentance and the ‘purple’ time of Advent. John forces us to wait. He waited. He waited the nine months that any child waits in the womb. For him, as for all of us, the womb was a place of safety, of warmth, of nourishment, of growth. The angel Gabriel tells Mary that her elderly cousin Elizabeth is six months into her pregnancy. The fact that a woman who has never been able to have a child, and is now beyond the normal age of child- bearing, is pregnant is given as proof to Mary that what has been said to her will come about. Nothing is impossible with God. Mary then sets out to be with Elizabeth. In this, there is the simple human kindness which we expect of Mary. She realises that to have a child so late will be difficult, painful, frightening for Elizabeth, no matter how much joy the child brings with him. Also she perhaps sees in Elizabeth someone else in whom and for whom God is doing something extraordinary. Elizabeth and she will understand one another’s situations and fears. Both need support. From Elizabeth, too, perhaps Mary seeks reassurance and confirmation of the truth of the angel’s message. She will receive the courage to set forth on her own journey. This is the reality of any visitation. It is so easy to see visiting someone as being something which is an act of kindness, that we are doing it only for the person we are visiting. Today so much of visiting has been replaced by a text or a WhatsApp. Only in Skyping someone and talking to them do we get a little sense of what really happens in a visit. Because truly, a visit is not only a one-way street. We also benefit from visiting someone. We are enriched. Even if it is only to witness how someone copes with a difficult situation, to be encouraged by their bravery, their acceptance. As Mary approaches Elizabeth, John the Baptist leaps for joy in his mother’s womb. Already, even with three months still to go until he is born, John has already accepted the mantle of his vocation. He is rejoicing at God-come-among-us. He is already pointing to Jesus and saying, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God.’ Like John, we are called to be Advent people. We are nurtured in the womb of our faith. We grow in the midst of our community, learning, supported by the love we discover and being led to discover through it, God’s love for us. And we are called to leap for joy, recognising Christ in our midst, pointing out the Lamb of God for others to follow with us. Our faith provides others who are searching or faltering with reassurance. Statue of the Visitation at the Church of the Visitation in Ein Karem, Israel

AGAIN IN today’s Gospel, as in all the Gospels for this Advent, John the Baptist is a central f igure. Perhaps we could call John

the model of an Advent person. So often, thanks to the secular world which wishes to hurry us onward to the fun of Christmas, we f ind Advent an uncomfortable time.

The ange l Gabr ie l te l l s Mary that her elderly cousin Elizabeth is six months into her pregnancy. The fact that a woman who has never been able to have a child, and is now beyond the normal age of child-bearing, is pregnant is given as proof to Mary that what has been said to her will come about. Nothing is impossible with God.

Mary then sets out to be with Elizabeth. In this, there is the simple human kindness which we expect of Mary. She realises that to have a child so late will be diff icult, painful, frightening for Elizabeth, no matter how much joy the child brings with him. Also she perhaps sees in Elizabeth someone else in whom and for whom God is doing something extraordinary. Elizabeth and she will understand one another’s situations and fears. Both need support.

From Elizabeth, too, perhaps Mary seeks

reassurance and confirmation of the truth of the angel’s message. She will receive the courage to set forth on her own journey.

This is the reality of any visitation. It is so easy to see visiting someone as being something which is an act of kindness, that we are doing it only for the person we are visiting. Today so much of visiting has been replaced by a text or a WhatsApp. Only in Skyping someone and talking to them do we get a lit tle sense of what really happens in a visit. Because truly, a visit is not only a one-way street. We also benefit from visiting someone. We are enriched. Even if it is only to witness how someone copes with a diff icult situation, to be encouraged by their bravery, their acceptance.

A s M a r y a p p r o a c h e s Elizabeth, John the Baptist leaps for joy in his mother’s womb. Already, even with three months still to go until he is born, John has already accepted the mantle of his vocation. He is rejoicing at

God-come-among-us. He is already pointing to Jesus and saying, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God.’

Like John, we are called to be Advent people.
