Coming in JanuaryGifted by OthernessIn many church communities, LGBTChristians are in the awkward positionof trying to explain themselves to twomutually hostile audiences. On the oneside, the LGBT community is oftendeeply suspicious of anyone connectedwith Christianity. On the other side sitsthe church, which often wishes thatgays and lesbians would go away, or atleast disappear into the woodwork qui-etly. But the LGBT community has aunique vocation in today’s church, oneof challenging the church to be inclu-sive of all God’s children – the centralmessage of the Gospel. How can “LGBTotherness,” viewed as a gift, shed lighton the “otherness” to which allChristians are called? What are the dis-tinctions among tolerance, acceptance, affirmation, celebration? Please joinHerbie Lanoux and Gretchen Chateauto discuss the gifts and challenges theLGBT community offers to All Saints’and the church at large. Series is basedon Gifted by Otherness: Gay and LesbianChristians in the Church, by L. WilliamCountryman and M. R. Ritley.

On Christmas Eve, James Marshall, baritone soloist, will accompany the All Saints’ Choir and orchestrafor Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on ChristmasCarols at the 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. choral preludes(preceding the 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. services). The work is a single movement consisting of theEnglish folk carols The truth sent from above, Come all you worthy gentlemen, and On Christmasnight all Christians sing.
The choir will also perform select movements from Geoffrey Bush’s A Christmas Cantata.Bush (1902-1998) was a British composer, organist and scholar of 20th century Englishmusic. For the cantata Bush chose a number of well-known, mainly English traditional carols. Several of the carols settings use traditional melodies, yet there are often unexpectedand subtle harmonic touches, either in the accompaniment or within the choir. The carolsare never overwhelmed and their simple direct spirit is retained.

Going green for the holidays can help your wallet aswell as the world, which makes green the new whiteor blue for Christmas 2011. Here are some ideas:
u Give the gift of time – make a home-cookedmeal, babysit, perform routine chores, or simplyenjoy something you both like together (sports events, movies, theater) makes a wonderful holiday gift.
u Give food – everyone needs to eat and you canhelp your recipients enjoy better meals by givingthem locally grown fruits, vegetables, cheese, etc.And the best part is you can save the shippingcosts for distant relatives and friends by usingwww.localharvest.com for local farms by localeacross the country or www.georgiaorganics.org forGeorgia. And of course, there’s always All Saints’ CSA partner, www.moorefarmsandfriends.com.
u Support their favorite cause – make a donation (most aretax deductible) to your friends’/family’s favorite charities. The economic downturn has been very hard on most non-profits, so your gift will be doubly appreciated.
u Make your own – some of the best gifts are those wereceive directly from the hands that made them. Gift making is a wonderful holiday tradition for the whole family, from making artwork, to ornaments, to baked goodsto potting live plants. It’s one way the kids can really begin to experience the joy of giving, even on a small allowance.
Greening Christmas
If none of these ideas work for you, there are thousands of great ideas as close as your computer. Googling ‘greenchristmas’ returned 76 million ideas so you’ll need to beselective, there’s sure to be something for everyone, eventhe scrooges on your list!

Several months ago, some of the clergy got together to discuss a growing need in our parish. We noticed severalfamilies in our community that worship and fellowship withtheir kids who have special needs. This is not news, ofcourse. Like any Christian community, we are blessed withan abundance of diversity in our parish, many different facesin which we can see the many different faces of Christ.
We started talking about this part of our diverse communityand decided to start a special worship service for familieswith kids with special needs or, as Geoffrey puts it, “any kidwith special energy.” It is important to us that this servicenot be a divider in our community, or a way to further isolatea portion of our community that might already receive messages of being “other” or “less than”. Instead, our hopewas to create a space where all kinds of ways to worship Godwere offered and lovingly accepted, a supplement to our reg-ular worship schedule where every type of person and familywas given the very particular message that they are perfectand made so by a loving God who never makes mistakes.
We found Rhythms of Grace, a worship curriculum created
Rhythms of Grace, Worship With Special Energyby Linda Snyder and Audrey Scanlan for exactly this purpose. We had our first service on November 13 in the chapel, which we cleared of chairs to make a wide open safe spacefor playing, dancing and worshiping. It was a marvelous,Spirit-filled occasion with over 30 kids and adults. We heard the story of Joseph and his brothers, we made ourown colorful coats, we bounced a parachute and celebratedEucharist. We closed it with our new “signature” song, This Little Light of Mine.
It is our intention to hold a Rhythms of Grace service on thesecond Sunday of every month at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel. We are always looking for new members for our little community-within-a-community. The service is open toeveryone at All Saints’ and beyond that needs just this thingfor their own worship life. We always need volunteers toread, play, sing and shepherd (and set-up and clean-up!).
For more information on Rhythms of Grace or to volunteer in this beautiful new initiative, contact Noelle
at 404-267-4276 or Noelle@ allsaintsatlanta.org.
