President’s Message

Glenn Capps

This was surely not good Camellia weather. Mr. “Unprotected” did not show up at some of the early shows, and I was surprised at the number of un-protected flowers at some of the shows. My yard sometimes did not produce enough to even think about going to a show. We in Fayetteville began to hope for some spring-like weather for our show, and we ended up with a great show. Officers and Directors were, again, invited to hold our Spring Board Meet-ing in Columbia on Saturday, May 1. The meeting began at 1:00 o’clock at the Denton’s home followed by the auction and a barbeque dinner. This meet-ing was well attended and plans were made for the September Convention at Litchfield Beach, South Carolina. Thank you to Mack McKinnon for working hard on the arrangements. We look forward to seeing everyone there. ACCS has received a very generous donation from the Directors of Mag-nolia Gardens. This was presented to our Treasurer at the Charleston show. I have expressed our “Thanks” to the Directors for this. Should you know any of the Directors of Magnolia please express our thanks to them, also. Looking for help is always a task. I have one of the largest one could have. I am looking for someone to fill shoes so big there is not even a size on them. Our good editor of the Journal has expressed to me and the board that he wishes to retire. We all said “NO!” Richard has done an outstanding job for ACCS. We have a publication that everyone is proud of. Now I will be the first to say Richard can’t be replaced, however we have to find a new edi-tor for the Journal. Please if you know of someone that might have some in-terest in the job please contact me. I have hired bankers, but this will be my first editor and believe you me I feel the pressure. I welcome all the help I can get. ACCS is sponsoring an ACS Judges’ Reaccreditation School at the con-vention in September on Saturday, September 18, 3:30pm-5:00pm. The in-structors will be Geary Serpas and Elaine Smelley. This is being offered at no cost. Please register for this through Bonnie Serpas [email protected], (803) 854-3171, and provide her with the following information: your name, address, phone number, email address and club/society affiliation with a sub-ject of “Judges’ School - ACCS Annual Convention.”

What Do You Do With Last Year’s Gib? Or

What You Should Not Do! By Mack McKinnon

I get many questions from club members about last year’s gib. Many ask if it

is usable again this year or can it be used on other plants. My standard answer is not to use old gib on camellias because we always have a fresh supply each year. I have been told over the years by gib experts such as Dr. Herbert Racoff that gib looses po-tency with time. Therefore, throw the old stuff out. Well, this year I did not follow my own recommendation entirely. I used fresh gib on my camellias, but I did not toss the old stuff. Back in mid-September, I mixed several ounces of 20,000 ppm gib with an equal amount of water and put it in a hand sprayer. This mixture was then applied to 3 of 10 cabbage plants, 2 of 8 young collard plants, and 2 mature tomato plants growing in containers. Results: (late October)

the tomato plants have out-grown the wire holders, but the fruit is small. No benefit.

the treated collard plants are a bit larger and taller than those untreated. No sig-nificant difference.

The treated cabbage plants are a problem. While the untreated plants have begun to “head” close to the ground, the treated plants have grown taller and are starting to “head.” If the heads are normal, I fear the stalk will not support the plant.

Conclusion: Throw the old stuff out!!!

Realizing the large number of seedling camellias that are being planted and grown throughout the country and desiring to have a method of evaluating the new seedlings, our vice-President for the Atlantic Coast, Mr. John P. Ill-ges, announced at the Annual Meeting of the American Camellia Society in Mobile, Alabama, in 1947, that he would offer a special medal for the best seedling camellia as soon as it could be arranged and a manner of choosing the winner could be settled on. Starting with the season of shows in 1948, an Award of Merit was offered for the best seedling shown in any show held under the auspices of the Ameri-can Camellia Society; and it was decided that to be eligible for the Illges Medal a seedling must have won this Award of merit, but not necessarily in the same year as the award of the medal. Although the seedling may be shown by anyone at any show sponsored by the American Camellia Society, the actual medal will be awarded to the originator of the variety. The first Illges Medal will be presented at the close of the 1949 season. Therefore, all awards of the Award of Merit must be reported to the Chairman of Awards (W. T. Wood, 564 Mulberry Street, Macon, Georgia), so that the new variety will be listed as being eligible for the Illges Medal. A sport will not be eligible for this award. The Board of Jurors will consist of judges who have traveled widely in the camellia belt and have seen or have definite information regarding the merits of these seedlings, and their decision will be final. To be eligible, the seedling must have been introduced or disseminated since 1944. The seedling must also be registered with the American Camellia Society under the rules of the Society governing registration. The rules as outlined above are temporary, and changes will be made as found necessary to make the award more workable. The dies for the medal are being produced by the Medallic Art Company of New York City, whose personnel and facilities are exclusively devoted to medallic reproduction of sculptors’ models. The company was founded forty years ago by French medalists who brought to this country the traditional art-istry that is possible only with the continental system of family devotion to a single art or trade. Miss Esther C. Coogle, artist in the Biology Department and the College of Agriculture of the University of Florida, furnished the original sketch from

CELEBRATION

On January 15, 2010, the Aiken Camellia Society celebrated its 60th An-niversary. The festive event was held at the beautiful Aiken County Historical Museum and was attended by upwards of 50 people. The evening was en-joyed by current members of the society, special guests, and out-of-town judges for the annual Camellia Show the following day. After welcome and opening remarks by President Jim Dickson, Lee Poe read minutes of the first Aiken Camellia Society meeting and reflected on the insight of some of our Aiken Camellia Society organizers. He, also, displayed a book of the Aiken County registered cultivars on which he and several other members are working. The Honorable Fred B. Cavannaugh, Aiken Mayor, presented a proclama-tion establishing January 15, 2010, as Aiken Camellia Society Day. This proclamation will be recorded in the archives of the City of Aiken, South Carolina, and will stand for years to come. Many attendees received beautiful framed pictures of replicas of the win-ning blooms of the first Aiken Camellia Show held in January 1952. The award for best in show under glass went to Ville De Nantes, while the award for the best bloom grown in the open went to Lady Clare. The evening presented a glimpse into the parties and culture of camellia lovers over half a century before. It was proclaimed by many who were pre-sent as one of the most memorable occasions our society has held in recent years.

It was proclaimed by many who were pre-sent as one of the most memorable occasions our society has held in recent years.

which Miss Margaret C. Grigor developed the sculptors’ models. Miss Grigor as a student of Walker Hancock at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia for five years. While there, she designed several medals, includ-ing the Mount Holyoke College Alumnae Medal and the Garvan Medal for the American Chemical Society. She won a traveling scholarship to Europe in 1937. She specializes in medals and relief plaques, having designed, among others, the American Transit Safety Award and the Judge Theodore Rosen Memorial Plaque. A member of the Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and former member of the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Miss Gr;igor has exhib-ited medals, figures, and portrait busts in several Philadelphia galleries and at the National Academy of Design and the National Sculpture Society in New York, as well as in other parts of Pennsylvania and in Massachussetts. Since leaving the Army, where she served as an officer in the Women’s Army Corps, she has designed the Goldberg Memorial Plaque and has worked in the field of medals and portrait busts.
