Atlas LeadershipThe Atlas welcomes new executive director Douglas Yeuell.

The Atlas is pleased to welcome seasoned arts leader and longtime Atlas partner, Douglas Yeuell, to our team!

Doug brings to the Atlas 25 years of arts management and leadership; since 1989 he as served as the Executive and Artistic Director of Atlas arts partner Joy of Mo-tion Dance Center. His ability to leverage Joy of Motion’s “Dance is for Everyone” mission resulted in growing the organiza-tion from a one-room studio to a finan-cially strong performing arts organization

The Atlas is on the forefront of provid-ing programs that engage, enrich, and excite our community. In addition to diverse performances that bring excit-ing and thought-provoking experienc-es to over 100,000 patrons annually, the Atlas offers unique educational opportunities.

with 3 locations serving tens of thousands of children and adults every year.

Committed to the Atlas’ mission of fos-tering the artistic growth of professional and aspiring artists, Doug's key initiatives include maintaining a high quality roster of contemporary performances and part-nerships with DC’s vibrant and emerging performing artists in choral arts, dance, music, spoken word, and theater. He will also focus on enhancing current arts partners’ relationships within the arts community and at the Atlas. Doug plans to increase the Atlas’ profile in arts educa-tion through the development of outreach and educational programs.

Please come meet Doug this season. You can reach him at [email protected] or 202-399-6764 x160.

Theatre for the Very Young This innovative program for young theatre-goers does more than enter-tain. Children ages 1-5 enjoy lively, participatory performances that engage very young children and help to build communications, motor, and intellectual skills. This year five magical productions will be presented including Blossom’s Rainbow in April, a part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. A November weekend of interactive child-caregiver workshops will explore the concepts of dramatic play.

City at Peace City at Peace will start up again in the fall with a year-long program at the Atlas that culminates in an INTER-SECTIONS Festival performance. This unique youth development program uses the performing arts and a social justice curriculum to teach conflict resolution, examine identity, and fos-ter young leaders.

Atlas Stagecraft Training and Appren-ticeship Program (ASTAP) Since 2010 the Atlas’ stagecraft train-ing workforce development program has advanced adults in real careers. Three months of training and a paid apprenticeship offer students valu-able, hands-on work experience. As a result, nearly all graduates are regu-larly working in theaters, events, or hospitality fields. ASTAP will expand to grades 9-12 in 2015.

Support from dedicated funders strengthens these programs allowing the Atlas to contribute to our commu-nity and reach more people. To learn more, contact Claire Carlin, director of development at [email protected] or 202-399-7993 x109.

Arts Education at the Atlas

Page 4: Atlas Performing Arts Center Newsletter, 2014-08

Arts enthusiasts and students beat the heat at the Atlas—host to dynamic programs for all ages.

ADVENTURE THEATRE At Summer Musical Theatre Camp children ages 6-10 put on a full musical. The kids auditioned, re-hearsed, and performed the show within the two-week camp sessions. Many par-ticipants came from the Atlas neighbor-hood and there were familiar faces among the campers—several have participated each year since it began in 2010. Camper Lia Graham started out as an orphan in Annie four summers ago, then moved on to Becky Thatcher in Tom Sawyer, Charlie in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and this summer was the penny-pinch-

ing Mayor of Hamlin in Rats! a musical version of the Pied Piper story. One never knows…a future star could be getting started right here at the Atlas!

CAPITAL FRINGE FESTIVAL DC’s popular Fringe expanded to H Street finding a home in three of the Atlas’ theaters this summer. 29 productions including dance, puppetry, theatre, and music delight-ed thousands of guests, earned media acclaim, and were supported by scores of volunteers.

CITY AT PEACE The Atlas’ out of school program for teens and young adults enrolled 30 DC Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program participants. Using City at Peace’s identity and conflict reso-lution curriculum rooted in social justice to teach the performing arts, the program culminated in a series of performances at the Atlas and at area recreation centers.

Atlas donors and neighbors Amy and Eric Boger talked with us about why they’ve chosen to invest in the Atlas.

How did you get involved at the Atlas? We’ve lived in the neighbor-hood for several years and we are excited about our community. The Atlas is a terrific amenity. We’ve been impressed with the quality of the programming, energy level, and ex-citement both at the Atlas and in the neighborhood.

Why do you make investing in the Atlas a priority? We know that building strong communities requires time, energy, resources, and a variety of perspectives. While professional-ly we’re invested in health care and international affairs, it’s important to us to help our artistic communities thrive, too. H Street is a terrific place made up of lots of different kinds of people—we like how that’s reflected at the Atlas. My [Eric’s] mother is an artist, I enjoy the prospect of support-ing a range of performing artists and

I understand the importance giving them affordable space and support to explore ideas and produce their work.

What are you looking forward to at the Atlas this year? Really, we’re cu-rious about most things the Atlas has to offer. In particular, we have enjoyed everything the Rorschach Theater company has done and are excited for She Kills Monsters. Shining City looks to be an intriguing thriller. We want to check that out. We also love seeing music in the Lang Theatre, it’s such a great experience—so we’re look-ing forward to So Percussion in the spring. We are also looking forward to Haliu Mergia (world music) and The Welders play, Not Enuf Lifetime this fall. As our baby gets a bit older, we are excited to bring him to Theatre for the Very Young shows to introduce our next generation to the arts. Clear-ly, we have a diverse range of tastes and Atlas gives us an opportunity to affordably explore a wide range of offerings, not far from our home.
