These respective innovations will be showcased during the CES Unveiled and Digital Experience events. This work potentially enables innovative and cost-effective capacitive touch modules. Atmel’s XSense flexible touch sensors will usher in a new era of user interface designs over a variety of sizes for consumer electronic displays. Notably, the flexible touch sensor allows capacitive touch to be wrapped around the side of a device, potentially eliminating the need for mechanical buttons that can wear-down when exposed to moisture and dirt. Today’s demonstrations with both flat and curved samples of Corning Gorilla Glass illustrate the compatibility of the Atmel XSense sensor with the industry’s standard chemically strengthened cover glass for touch-enabled displays. Atmel is confident that industrial designers can now develop touchscreens with stylish and contemporary form factors, without compromising reliability, functionality and optical clarity, even in the most demanding and rugged environments. “We are excited to coordinate with Atmel for this demonstration. These results further demonstrate Corning Gorilla Glass’ compatibility with emerging touch technologies,” said Paul Tompkins, director, commercial technology, Corning Specialty Materials. “Touchscreens in inventive, unique form factors are fast becoming an ideal way to differentiate new consumer devices,” said Jalil Shaikh, vice president and general manager of touch materials, Atmel Corporation. “These efforts allow our customers the ability to work with more flexible materials and damage-resistant glass. We look forward to an ongoing, collegial relationship with Corning.”

Atmel Showcases Next-Generation Touchscreens at 2013 CES

Revolutionary Industrial Designs for Smartphones, Tablets and Ultrabooks Using Atmel’s XSense Flexible Touch Sensors and Damage-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass

CES Unveiled 2013, Las Vegas, Nevada, January 6, 2013 - Atmel® Corporation (NASDAQ: ATML),

a leader in microcontroller and touch technology solutions, today announced that Atmel® Corporation

and Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) are demonstrating Atmel XSense™ flexible sensor

functionality on thin IT-sized and curved Corning Gorilla Glass form factors. These respective

innovations will be showcased during the CES Unveiled and Digital Experience events. This work

potentially enables innovative and cost-effective capacitive touch modules. Atmel’s XSense flexible

touch sensors will usher in a new era of user interface designs over a variety of sizes for consumer

electronic displays. Notably, the flexible touch sensor allows capacitive touch to be wrapped around

the side of a device, potentially eliminating the need for mechanical buttons that can wear-down when

exposed to moisture and dirt.

Today’s demonstrations with both flat and curved samples of Corning Gorilla Glass illustrate the

compatibility of the Atmel XSense sensor with the industry’s standard chemically strengthened cover

glass for touch-enabled displays. Atmel is confident that industrial designers can now develop

touchscreens with stylish and contemporary form factors, without compromising reliability,

functionality and optical clarity, even in the most demanding and rugged environments.

“We are excited to coordinate with Atmel for this demonstration. These results further demonstrate

Corning Gorilla Glass’ compatibility with emerging touch technologies,” said Paul Tompkins, director,

commercial technology, Corning Specialty Materials.

“Touchscreens in inventive, unique form factors are fast becoming an ideal way to differentiate new

consumer devices,” said Jalil Shaikh, vice president and general manager of touch materials, Atmel

Corporation. “These efforts allow our customers the ability to work with more flexible materials and

damage-resistant glass. We look forward to an ongoing, collegial relationship with Corning.”
