NIGHT VISION BASICSNIGHT VISION TYPES

ATN makes two different types of night vision devices based

on two different kinds of technologies. The most common of

the two is image intensification technology, which is what most

people think of when they talk about night vision. This kind of

device uses whatever ambient light is available and amplifies it

into a visible image.ATN also makes night vision devices based on thermal imaging

technology. This type of device can detect heat, or thermal energy.

Sometimes referred to as infrared viewing, thermal imaging devices

can be used in total darkness, and are effective in environments

where smoke, fog, and solid obstacles might obscure ones view.

IMAGE INTENSIFICATION NIGHT VISIONAt the heart of this type of night vision device is the image

intensifier tube (IIT). The tube gathers existing ambient light

(including starlight, moonlight or infra-red light) through thefront lens. This light, which is made up of photons goes into a

photocathode tube that changes the photons to electrons.

The electrons are then amplified to a much greater number

through an electrical and chemical process. The electrons are then

hurled against a phosphorus screen that changes the amplified

electrons back into visible light that you see through the eyepiece.

The image will now be a clear green-hued amplified re-creation of

the scene you were observing.

THERMAL IMAGINGAll objects, both natural and manmade, emit infrared energy

as heat. By detecting very subtle temperature differences o

everything in view, infrared (or thermal imaging) technolog

reveals what otherwise would be invisible to the naked eye.

A thermal imaging device uses a special lens that focuse

infrared light into an array of infrared detector elements. Thdetector elements create a detailed temperature pattern called

a thermogram, which is translated into electric impulses. Th

impulses are sent to a signal-processing unit, a circuit board wit

a dedicated chip that sends the information through an electroni

display component. The resulting image will appear in variou

colors depending on the intensity of the infrared emission.

HOW FAR YOU CAN SEEThere are a few variables that can affect the distance you ca

see with a night vision device. The larger the object the easier i

is to see is one obvious factor. The degree of detail you can see

from a given distance will depend in part on the type of device yo

are using.

Lighting conditions play a large part in determining distanc

range. The more ambient light you have (starlight, moonlight, an

infrared light) the better and further you will be able to see. Yo

can always see further on a night when the moon and stars areout, than when its cloudy or overcast. We typically state that yo

can tell the difference between a male and a female or a dog and

a deer at about 75 to 100 yards. However, if you were lookin

across an open field and there was a half moon out you could se

a barn or a house 500 yards away.

ATNs Smart Technology is designed to increase ease of use

and extend battery life. It consists of a proximity sensor that

automatically turns the unit on when put into viewing position,

and shuts off when no longer in that position. The user never has

to worry about turning the scope on or off. Our Smart Technology

system automatically senses when the unit is no longer in useand shuts down into sleep mode, reducing the need to constantly

replace batteries.

TOTAL DARKNESS TECHNOLOGYOur Total Darkness Technology gives your ATN device greater

night vision range and better viewing capability. Models with this

technology have an infrared illuminator that throws out a beam

of infra-red light thats near invisible to the naked eye, but can be

seen through a night vision device. This gives your ATN precision

optics device the capability to see in total darkness.

RED ON GREEN RETICLE SYSTEMYoull never lose sight of your crosshairs due to darkness wit

ATNs Red on Green Reticle System. Our illuminated reticle has

10-position rheostat that adjusts brightness from a well-define

black reticle for favorable light conditions, to a glowing red reticl

for low light conditions.

PROSHIELD LENS COATING

ATN has developed a proprietary lens coating thats designedto allow for maximum light transmission and durability. Th

Proshield coating is a compound mixture that makes our lense

resistant to scratches, condensation, static, and glare.

ATN IMAGE INTENSIFIER TUBESWeve developed a range of Custom Grade Tubes (CGT

designed to meet the demands and expectations of our internationa

customers. Engineered for significantly enhanced performanc

over current 2nd generation IITs, our CGT tubes deliver the bes

performance-to-cost ratio in the marketplace. (State Departmen

export license may be required.)

Our High Performance Tubes (HPT) are engineered fo

significantly enhanced performance over current 2nd generatio

IITs. Our HPT (FOM 1400) tubes deliver 3rd Gen performance at

2nd generation cost. (State Department export license required.)

Our FOM 1400 (3I) and FOM 1600 (3N) Tubes are designed to

DEVICE CLASSIFICATIONS

NIGHT VISION DEVICE GENERATIONS

Night vision devices are categorized according to the technical

specifications of the image intensifier tube. The term generation

or Gen is the accepted standard for both military and commercial

grade night vision devices. They can be designated as either a 1st,2nd or 3rd generation unit.

1st generation is currently the most popular type of night vision

in the world. Utilizing the basic principles described earlier, a 1st

generation unit will amplify the existing light several thousand

times letting you clearly see in the dark. These units provide a

bright visible image at a low cost, which makes them a popular

choice for boating, observing wildlife, or providing security for the

home.

2nd generationis primarily used by law enforcement, and has

a variety of other professional applications. Consequently, 2nd

Gen. units are more expensive than the comparable 1st Gen. units.2nd generation devices have an additional micro-channel plate,

commonly referred to as an MCP. This added component allows

2nd generation devices to amplify the light many more times than

1st generation, producing a brighter and sharper image.

CGT/HPT:The CGT/HPT types of Image Intensifier tubes are

engineered for significantly enhanced performance over current

2nd generation IITs. They are Multi-Alkali compact 18mm format

MCP Image Intensifiers. They have increased sensitivity, resolution,

Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), and the Modulation Transfer Function

(MTF). These improvements produce an exceptional image clarity

and brightness.

3rd generation units contain a sensitive chemical, gallium

arsenide, within the photocathode. The result is an image thats

brighter and sharper than 2nd generation units. An ion barrier film

is also added to increase tube life. 3rd Gen. provides the user with

excellent low light performance.

One of the most important specifications of any thermal imaging device is frame rate. This refers to the number of frames per

second that can be viewed by the device. The lower the frame rate, the choppier the motion. Conversely, the higher the frame rate,

the more precise the motion. This is especially critical in weapon scope applications that require precise and quick acquisition.

Standard professional thermal systems come in 30hz (Fast Imaging or FI) while many commercial viewers run at 9hz (Standard

The ATN NVM14Multi-Purpose Night Vision Monocular is a high performance modulanight vision device. The NVM14s great flexibility makes it an ideal choice for use by elit

units, military personnel conducting Close Quarter Combat and Urban operations, tactical la

enforcement teams and security-conscious civilians.

The ATN NVM14 can be handheld, head-mounted, and can be attached to a helmet o

weapon. Compatible with most IR laser aiming/illuminating devices, this model defines mult

mission versatility. This high performance unit enables walking, driving, weapon firing, shor

range surveillance, map reading, vehicle maintenance, and administering first aid durin

nighttime operations.

The ATN NVM14 is also equipped with ATNs Total Darkness Technology featuring a built-

infrared light-emitting source that increases visual range when ambient light is minimal. Th

NVM14 format can easily incorporate Gen 2+, CGT, HPT and 3 gen. image intensifier tube

allowing this unit to easily meet the budget requirements of police, military, search/rescu

teams, private security agencies and security conscious civilians. The ATN NVM14 ensures

tactical advantage for any military, LE or civilian user operating at night.

ADVANCED FEATURES

Built-in IR Illuminator. The built-in IR Illuminator with flood lens and with the IR indicatI

within the FOV for use in total darkness.

Camera Adapter. Provides nighttime photography or video-shooting capability (M37x0.7I

and M52x0.75 connecting screw threads).

Automatic Brightness Control. Even under unsteady brightness conditions, the AutomatI

Brightness Adjustment System always keeps the IIT brightness level constant.

Bright Light Cut-off System. Bright Light Sensor for the conditions when too much light I

detected by the system. The indicator warning light within the FOV. When the light sourc

disappears, the unit will turn on automatically.

Dual Power Capability. The Included Battery Adapter allows the NVM14 to accept eitheI

the 123A Lithium or standard AA batteries.
