Protons (p) = have a positive charge (+1)

Neutrons (n) = have no charge (0)

Protons and neutrons make up the core of the atom called the nucleus.

Electrons (e) = have a negative charge

Atomic NumberEvery atom of a particular element contains the same number of protons.

The number of protons is equal to the atomic number.
