Fire resistant materialsPutting safety at the heart of design

Fire safety is paramount when constructing new buildings. It is now even more at the forefront of design following revised fire regulations to address tragic flaws in some building construction.

The good news? Porcelain is Class A1 fire rated, which make Atria tiles the perfect answer to managing fire risk. You have the peace of mind that your tiles meet stringent fire safety regulations, yet still create an awe-inspiring space.

Fire safety regulations: Approved Document B

Porcelain meets the definition for non-combustible materials as set out in ‘Approved Document B (fire safety)’ for buildings in England under European rules. Ceramics, including porcelain, are therefore, considered Class A1 without the need for testing under Commission Decision 2003/424/EC of 6th June 2003.

What makes porcelain fire resistant?

Porcelain is excellent at absorbing heat without transferring it to neighbouring areas, which is vital in helping to stop the spread of fire throughout a building.

Its fire resistance comes from the material’s high density (2370 Kg/m²), combined with the manufacturing process which sees the tiles withstanding 1000 degrees Celsius. Being fired at such a high temperature renders porcelain tiles inert, which means that they will not emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a fire.

Atria tiles are also made with the best quality porcelain and free from additives that might produce dangerous compounds under extreme heat.

Stone Beautiful, practical outdoor spaces Case Study | North West Cambridge

Comprising much needed accommodation for Cambridge University and post-graduate students as well as sustainable private homes, phase one of this development aspired to create a community feel with a vast range of amenities and open space. Public areas included ground floor courtyards, a number of pathways and terraces.

Two 80m long walkways were lined with 1200 x 600mm Atria Venice Anthracite porcelain tiles creating an aspirational feel with minimal maintenance. Atria Roma Natural tiles in the 600 x 900mm format were also used on four of the terraces to perfectly contrast with the corten steel Planterline bespoke planters with inset iroko timber seating resulting in a stunning yet practical design.

All tile areas were installed on the Kinley aluminium joist support structure system, seamlessly covering extensive services. Residents now enjoy the open space lined with shopping opportunities, facilities and seating areas. This is a development for both the university and residents to be proud of.


Wood effect porcelain tiles Natural wood colour finishes incorporate a touch of the traditional into 21st Century design. Plank profile tiles allow you to create chic indoor and outdoor environments with the look of wooden floorboards or decking in standard and herringbone patterns.

Atria tile installationOutdoor installation for 20mm thick tiles – the Terrace System

Atria tiles are mounted onto Raaft adjustable pedestals and aluminium joists. If mounting on adjustable pedestals over 100mm in height, an optional fibreglass mesh backing is available upon request. Noggin pieces clip into place for extra strength, if required.

Tiles are loose laid upon the joist system, with 3mm tile spacers holding them in place. Without the need for grouting, you are assured of excellent drainage, and loose fitting means that you can easily lift up tiles to access services below.

Atria tiles ensure a lower environmental impact

Atria porcelain tiles are made from naturally occurring minerals and clays which are dry pressed and fired in a kiln. This high heat process ensures a top-quality tile that can stand the test of time.

It is this manufacturing process, combined with porcelain’s natural make up that mean Atria tiles have a lower environmental impact compared to many other alternatives. They do not contain harmful contaminants, nor will they absorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other chemicals from their surroundings. They are also low maintenance and can be easily cleaned using solvent-free cleaning products, so even when in place their eco-friendly status remains in tact.
