Attitude Glasses

COMPETENCY: Interpersonal Effectiveness

GOAL: Identify traits and behaviors admired in others

GRADE LEVEL: 2 5GROUP SIZE: 22 25TIME: 30 minutes

MATERIALS NEEDED: Books: Project Self-Esteem ISBN #0-915190-59-1, Story of the Magic Glasses pages 171 173.

Several pairs of glasses/ sunglasses with different frames

PROCEDURE: Discuss positive and negative attitudes. Ask the children what are positive and negative attitudes. Do they know people with positive attitudes? How do they act? Then tell them you have a story about some Magic Glasses that you want to share with them. After reading the story, ask if there was really magic in the glasses? Talk about the story and how the glasses were magic. Also, discuss how the boys treated the brother when he had a positive attitude. Brainstorm compliments that focus on character or inner qualities. Give the students a chance to volunteer to pick a pair of glasses and tell the good that they see in their classmates. Give the student time to give the compliments to the classmate. Then choose other students to take a turn seeing the good in others. I tell the students that they need to choose someone who hasnt had the opportunity to get compliments so that more people get a chance to be recognized in a positive way. Give as many students a turn as time allows. At the end of the lesson review the reason for the lesson: All people have positive traits, we just have to look for them.
