Research vessel Callista is a highlight of our Science of the Sea Experience, where you can learn more about our blue planet’s fascinating oceans – the life they support and the conservation efforts being made to preserve them. Have a tour of this fascinating ship, watch live footage from the remote autonomous vehicle (ROV) filming beneath your feet and take a look at plankton through a microscope.

RNLI boats BERTH M698Shannon class lifeboat (14-18 September)The latest class of all-weather lifeboat to join the RNLI fleet. She’s the first modern all-weather lifeboat to be propelled by waterjets instead of traditional propellers, making her our most agile and manoeuvrable all-weather lifeboat yet. Designed entirely in-house by a team of RNLI engineers, the RNLI harnessed cutting-edge technology to ensure this new lifeboat meets the demands of a 21st century rescue service, building on systems developed for her big sister, the Tamar class lifeboat.

B-class Atlantic 85 lifeboat (19-23 September)This inshore lifeboat is one of the fastest in the RNLI fleet. Named after Atlantic College in Wales, where this rigid inflatable lifeboat was first developed. Introduced into the fleet in 2005, the Atlantic 85 is the third generation of B class lifeboat and is gradually replacing the Atlantic 75.

Scaramouche The Scaramouche Sailing Project is a youth sail training programme that since its beginning has broken new grounds in sailing. It began in a disadvantaged inner London State School, Greig City Academy, and set out in 2014 with the aim of promoting sailing as a long-term interest for 11-19 years old teenagers who otherwise wouldn’t have had access to the sport. It was the brain child of teacher, Jon Holt, and with the assistance of a key member of the crew, current YJA Young Sailor of the Year Montel Fagan-Jordan, it set about turning a sailing dream into a reality. With the hard work of a group of 14 teenage students, it has raised enough funds to buy and restore a former Admiral’s Cup yacht, the 45ft Scaramouche. Having completed all of

the qualifying races in 2016, the crew then sailed into the history books by finishing 142nd out of 360 entrants in the Rolex Fastnet Race 2017. It was the first ever state comprehensive school to compete in the race.

Suhaili BERTH M169

In 1969, the same year as the first Boat Show, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston became the first person to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe non-stop, sailing aboard the 32ft Suhaili. Designed by William Atkins, her design is based on the Norwegian sailing lifeboat designs of Colin Archer. Building of Suhaili started on a slipway in Bombay Docks in 1963 using teak throughout and she was finally launched in December 1964. The word ‘Suhaili’ is the name given to the south-east wind by Arab seafarers in the Persian Gulf. No one would call Suhaili a greyhound, but she is solid, strong and a very good seaboat.

Lively Lady BERTH M169AFollowing a nine-month restoration, Sir Alec Rose’s iconic sailing boat, Lively Lady, is on display at the Show. In 1967-63, Sir Alec Rose single-handedly circumnavigated the globe aboard Lively Lady. A greengrocer from Portsmouth with a passion for single handed sailing, he set sail on 16 July 1967 returning 12 months later on 4 July 1968 having circumnavigated the globe, stopping off in Australia and New Zealand.

Kaskelot BERTH M540Explore Kaskelot’s historic desks and stories of adventure. Built in Denmark by renowned J Ring Andersen Shipyard in 1948, at 46.6m she is one of the largest wooden ships remaining in commission. In recent years, Kaskelot has starred in blockbusters including Return to Treasure Iland (1986), The Three Musketeers (1993), Amazing Grace (2006), Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Poldark (2016). Her return visit to the Show offers you a rare chance to experience first-hand the magic of one of the last classic wooden ships afloat.

Radio Sailing PoolWhy not test your sailing skills on dry land and heard to our fantastic new Radio Sailing Pool set in the heart of the Arena. Free to all visitors, with everyone able to sail our Dragon 65 racing yachts along with some other new models to discover. There will be open sailing sessions, as well as a chance to have a short race or set a time around the course to see how you measure up to other sailors at the Show.

Get AfloatGet all the family enjoying a range of watersports, with the expert team at Rockley Watersports on hand to offer guidance and top tips. Activities available include the ever-popular Stand-up Paddleboarding and dinghy sailing.
