Volunteers pull the Visitor Caboose into Modern Times!!!! The Brightness! It Burns! The caboose sports a facelift with bright fresh paint from last fall, new reflective letters, and a refurbished sign. Blip Printers from Twin Falls (Lisa, Brad & Chad) worked with us to get the lettering exactly right. Thank you to those who generously donated last year to help cover most of these expenses. We are continuing to update the Caboose. Mike McFadyen has worked to get all the interior and exterior lights working. He fashioned a cone for the flag spot and extended an LED light to highlight the sign at night. The flagpole also needed some essential TLC, which the McFadyen family -- Mike, Rhonda, Alex, Cameron, and Samantha -- took care of. Mik`e also created clips to hold the brochures upright. More updates are planned -- stay tuned. If you would like to help, make checks to Caboose Tourist Information Center, P.O. Box 403, Fairfield, ID 83327 or contact a committee member. Thank you. Caboose Committee: Pam Berndt, Lorrie Brand, Nancy Dettori, Marilyn Amen, Mike McFadyen, Clarence Stilwill and Shari Simon. ❦

Hümongous ATV Rally Came to Fairfield Last Weekend!!! Uh, Wöw!

ood heavens!!! How many of those ATVs were there last weekend? Eight million? Eleventeen thousand???? Something like that. Anyway, the Fairfield Off-Road Stampede

surpassed expectations for their big weekend rally, sold out way in advance, involving an exquisitely organized ATV road run north from Fairfield into the Big Smoky and South Fork watersheds, followed by a musical and social event in the Fairfield City Park. Wow! Did I say Wow? Where did they all come from?????

Camas school students worked as volunteers at poker run stations, earning something like $1,500 for school activities and team uniforms! And Camas EMS reported one run-related injury: a fortunately innocuous bee sting! ❦

Brief Lives (Camas Style) by Tracy Perry, Class of 1957

The Wheat Field. And Sitting On My Butt. “I moved to Fairfield in the summer of 1954 when my father Virgil Perry took a job with the State of Idaho Highway Department. I joined the Musher Sophomore class of 1957. We lived next door (to the west) of the Armitage family. One summer evening, we were in our front yard, enjoying the cool breeze. Joe Armitage walked by headed west and asked me if I was busy. I told him no and then he explained that he was headed for the Mormon well west of town. The water pump that supplied water for the Mormon wheat field was pumping sand and they needed help to divert the sand and save the crop. I asked him how much it paid and he said it was all volunteer work. I told him I couldn't work for nothing, and he walked away. My dad then asked me if I was going to sit there all night on my butt while those folks needed all the help they could get! I grabbed a shovel and went on toward the well knowing full well that he was absolutely right!

The whole crew worked our tails off until about 4 a.m. We contained the sand flow and saved the crop! I went home feeling pretty proud! The next afternoon, Bishop Kay Pond from the Mormon Church came by our house. He said that if I would work that hard, all night, with no pay, he thought I would make a good hired hand for his farm northeast of Fairfield and get paid a decent wage. (The going rate was $6 a day for a 12-hour day, including lunch!) He put me to work, even though I was not a member of his congregation. I worked the entire summer right up to time to go back to school My dad taught me a good lesson that night! I didn't graduate with the Class of '57 but I am now a Volunteer Junkie, working with five organizations here in Colorado! No one has any sand to move! Thanks, Dad!” ❦
