Personal Statement

My name is Carmen Morbach; I will have a Bachelors degree in psychology from Argosy University

Online in December 2009 . I also have an Associate degree in nursing which I obtained at the University of Alaska, Anchorage campus. In my career as a nurse I have gained experience in several areas but my primary focus was in medical/surgical, oncology, and intravenous therapy. I worked both in inpatient and outpatient areas. The most satisfying part of my job as a nurse was the human element. Especially satisfying was my work in oncology where I counseled patients and their families in end of life processes and in the process of grieving. I found that I have much compassion for my fellow man/woman and that I have a gift of being able to provide comfort for those suffering from physical and emotional traumas.

As I embark in a new direction in my career I desire to use those gifts in a new way. As I consider the choices that are available to me in the field of psychology I also continue to have a desire to use my skills as a nurse as they relate to interactions with persons with mental disabilities. The best case scenario would be to incorporate the two disciplines. I would consider working in the prison system as a nurse/counselor or working for the veteran’s administration in their mental health clinic. I would welcome an opportunity to work with soldiers returning from active duty who are suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder and help them reintegrate in their communities. General counseling, life coaching, and mental health counseling is a satisfying work and a way to give back to the community for the blessed life that I lead.

Critical Thinking

Evidence of critical thinking is being able to think independently with insight, integrity, and fair mindedness.

It shows intellectual perseverance, being able to clarify issues and evaluate the credibility of sources.

It requires active listening.It requires careful deliberate determination of whether one should

accept, reject, or suspend judgment about a claim.I have these abilities and can apply them in my work.

My Future in Learning

Having been a nurse I have had opportunities for continuing education as this is required for my license. Aside from being required I found it also to be essential. Psychology as well as medicine is an ever changing field with new discoveries and new developments in treatment happening on a regular basis. This makes it imperative to be open to learning new things as this affects our patients and clients.

I will continue to take advantage of continuing education classes in whatever field I choose to work. There are conferences and workshops available to stay abreast of new developments and review that which I have learned. In my volunteer work as a counselor I have already discovered that I need to stay sharp mentally in order to be the best I can be for my clients. I will continue to seek opportunities for growth as I start work in my field. I have found that employers are very open to providing opportunities for continued learning including reimbursing the cost upon completion.
