Personal Statement

* It is time for me to change species and make a difference with Homo sapiens instead of animals.  * I have been a veterinary technician for thirteen years. * I have always had a gift for taking care of people and animals. * One thing I love the most about the medical profession is that

every day is never the same and you never know what the day will bring you.

* My psychology degree and veterinary technician degree have prepared me for working with many different types of people, personalities and life styles as well as different types of medicine.

* Having to deal with non-verbal patients half of my career has given me more patience to take the extra time to look for non-verbal cues to understand what my patients are telling me.

* My goal is to make a difference in one person’s life, so they can do the same.

Case Study

What do you think are the important skills that Jim should have to ensure that the client comes back next week?

Jim should show the client he is a caring, warm, respectful, and trustworthy so she feels comfortable enough to talk to him and come back for

more treatments. If he can show her their relationship will be to help her empower herself and learn new ways to deal with her feelings she will return for further sessions. He also needs to show her that he understands her culture and

how it will play a major role in her treatment success.

What do you think are the initial issues or anxieties that you will face while establishing rapport with your clients?

The first initial issues that I could face while establishing a rapport with the client would be the lack of culture knowledge. I would have to do a lot of

research to understand her culture and beliefs in order to fully understand where her thoughts come from and how to help her. “Effective counselors have

moved from being culturally unaware to ensuring that their personal biases, values, or problems will not interfere with their ability to work with clients who

are culturally different from them” (Covery, 24). Having knowledge and understanding of her culture will help create a better understanding of her

personality and increase the relationship with the client.

Research skill

AbstractAlcoholic choices among teenagers and how advertisement influence their choices. The student chosen for this

research are from two different school districts, ranging in age from 12-18 years of age. The total number to student in this study will be about 1500 teens from each school district to start, for a total of 3000 teens. The teens will be interviewed and given questionnaires about their choice of alcoholic preferences. The students will also be shown television commercials and alcohol advertisement. The hypothesis is beer is the alcoholic choice for teens because of advertisements. The research shows that boys prefer beer for alcoholic beverages, where as girls prefer mix drinks. Teens are at higher risk at bring exposed to beer advertisement and commercials during sporting events, concerts and other highly active young people events. Beer is the favored beverage among male drinkers and younger drinkers while wine is the top choice among female drinkers and older drinkers (Jones, 2007). The results suggest that because of the placement of the advertisement boys are more likely to drink beer. The advertisements for mix drinks are being geared toward girls. Doing more specific research will show the effect on beer and advertisements and explain why the male gender prefers beer to alcohol.

ResultsThe participants responses to the interviews and questionnaires were positive. Each participant answered all

questions to the best of their ability. When reviewing the questionnaires we will use the answers in the ANOVA statistic test to score the outcome of knowledge on beer brand labels. The design is a 2 X 3 factorial experiment, gender by beer labels, TV commercials and other interview questions. The outcome of the study showed that the male participants prefer beer to other alcoholic beverages and they had a higher exposure to beer. The female participants’ preferred mix drinks to beer because of taste. With supporting research articles it shows that beer is the preference of teens because of advertisement. My hypothesis, Beer is the alcoholic choice for teens because of advertisements can be proven with the supporting materials throughout this study. With more research one can prove which type of advertisement is most effective among teens and which beer band is most popular among teens. Having this information could show a trend in teen behavior among the choice to drink and advertisement.

Ethics and Diversity Awareness

1. Latino’s come from Central and South America populations. Latino’s are a diverse group of Spanish, Portuguese, Indians, Asians, and Africans.

2. They have gone through political movement, slavery, war, conquest and geographic movement.

3. Latinos place value on family and most have multiple families living in one house hold. 4. The majority of Latinos are more likely to own their home then rent them, but there is

tremendous variation across Latinos groups and income levels (Robinson-Wood, 2009). Most Latinos are likely to work in service occupations or in operator type of occupations.

5. They are less likely to work in agriculture type work and more likely to work in construction compared to the common thought.

6. There are a lot of mental issue that Latinos carries with them that can cause problems later, such as, cultural change, family organization, current ecological environment, and transitions.

7. Latinos has many common cultural values: intimacy, personal honor, faith in friends and family, respect, the development of trust, gentle people, pride, loyalty to family, collectivism, and religion.

8. Personal honor and family structure are highly valued within the Latinos community. “Marianismo is bases on the Catholic cult of the virgin Mary, which dictates that when women become mothers they attain the status of Madonnas and accordingly, are expected to deny themselves in favor of their children and husband (Robinson-Wood, p. 85)..

Ethics and Diversity Awareness

1. The African American people have struggled through their history to keep their culture alive.

2. The slave trade brought African Americans to many different parts of the world. Portugal was the first country to receive a shipment of slaves. There were slaves in African however they were seen in different ways.

3. When an African owned an African as a slave they are not plantation or mining, they are not striped of their culture or family heritage and it was not based on property.

4. When African Americans came to another country, they used their religion and spirituality to help cope with the change of the environment and stress of slavery.

5. It was not until Lincoln singed the Emancipation Proclamation that made slavery illegal that slaves gained their freedom. The 14th Amendment gave citizenship and the 15th Amendment gave the right to vote to African Americans.

5. African American families are run by female in the house hold with a large family network group. Family is of high value to African American culture with most family members helping each other out and living with each other.

Foundations of Psychology

Social Norm Assignment

To fit in or think outside the box? Every day we make decides to conform or not conform to our society. Conformity is when others infuse a person’s behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes in order to obey the rules to the social norm.

Conformity also occurs by the "implied presence" of others, or when other people are not actually present” (USC). To conform completely is a bad thing for our society and to an individual.

To conform to every aspect of our lives would cause one to not be an individual and the world would not have any new ideas to change our ways of thinking.

When everyone conforms there becomes no one who can think outside the box, see change or find a new and better way of doing their job, dress code, or living their life.

Page 22: Au Psy492 E Portfolio Terri Garrett For Slide Share Full

Foundations of Psychology

Conformity can lead to a lack of the truth and hinder a company or person who is making the right decision.

“People faced with strong group consensus sometimes go along even though they think they others may be wrong. In addition, they sometimes believe that the others are right, doubting the evidence of their own senses if the members of their group seem confident enough” (Kenrick, Neuberg & Cialdini,118).

When people conform to social norms they lose apart of themselves and have trouble identifying their true identity and thoughts.

Those who conform have a harder time fighting for their own beliefs and have to constantly defend themselves and their ideas within their every days lives.

Once people understand themselves then they have the power to not conform and live an open truthful life.

When a person conforms the decision can be either be a good decision or a bad decision depending on the person and the situation. In most cases people should choose to not conform to our society norm in order to experience change. However, there are some cases when conforming to get the job done can create a better product. When a person chooses to conform they should make sure they do not change their personal believes or ideas to compete the product. There is a fine line to walk when it comes to conforming to your environment.

Applied Psychology

Describe French and Raven’s five bases of power. Discuss each base in relation to David in his role as Senior Staffing Manager.

French and Ravens proposed five types of power: reward, coercive, legitimate, expert, and referent that shows power and leadership effectiveness.

Reward power is how an organization gives incentives for a desired behavior. An incentive can be raises, good work assignments, or vacations.

Coercive power gives the organization the ability to punish a worker by dismissal, non-appealing work assignments or dock pay. David is clear about his expectations and is fair with assigning work assignments.

Legitimate power allows the employee to think the company’s power is justifiable. Legitimate power is sometimes called authority. A boss has the authority to request an employee to work over time, but an employee’s does not have the same authority. David sets his employees work schedules and training schedules.

Expert power allows “employees to believe that some other individual has expertise in a given area and that he or she should defer to the expert’s judgment” (Muchinsky, 2007). The foundation of expert power is the perceived knowledge, comprehension, or ability of a person. An employee can be more skilled at ability then another showing they have more expert compared to another. These employees can be very valuable to a company.

Referent power is hard to explain or understand. “One employee might admire another, want to be like that person, and want to be approved of by him or her” (Muchinshy, 2007). Referent power can be effective by social and cultural factors, as well as age. An employee will identify with a group and might bend to the group’s opportunity.
