Becky Dittemore-Escalante, a 57-year old nurse who lives in Penn Valley,has been working with Kathy Kaplan,personal trainer at Anytime Fitness, torev up her lifestyle. Kathy has Becky

working up a sweat five days a week with cardio on the Adaptive MotionTrainer (AMT) machine.

At first my endurance was terrible.Fifteen minutes tops on the machine.Now Im up to 30 minutes, Becky

said.She also uses free weights, machines

and medicine ball exercises for strengthtraining.

One of the more challenging aspectsof the program for Becky has beennutrition. Her lifestyle makes it difficult to stay on trackall the time.

I had my grandkids over this weekend, so I splurgedon pizza and mac & cheese, Becky admitted.

An occasional splurge is sometimes unavoidable, butKathy encourages Becky to keep the portions under

control. Becky makes good use of Anytime Fitness website, Anytime Health, to input her food intakeonline so she can keep track of her calories and fooddensity.

She also enjoys using the Groove, a device providedby Anytime Fitness to keep track of calories burnedthroughout the day. Her Groove device vibrates whenshes been static for a while as an alert to start beingmore active. It provides her with an extra dose ofmotivation.

I love it. Its easy touse. It was vibrating atlunch the other day and I

was like, Come oneverybody, lets get

moving! Becky said.Her enthusiasm has helped her

achieve good results.Im very happy. Im seeing some

shrinkage! Becky said, excited. Kathyagreed about her clients progress.

Ive seen a big difference with her.She works hard so shes always sweaty,but shes definitely getting stronger andpushing it a little more now, Kathy said.

While counting cal-ories is working

for Becky, general awareness and food journaling-while less precise-is gettingMike Buttram goodresults as well.

Mike, a 21 year oldtheatre student at Sierra

College, has big goals. Weighing almost400 pounds, he joined Lighten Up! to kick-start a healthy new lifestyle and get trim.

With the guidance of Rich Smith,personal trainer atCourthouse Athletic

Club, Mike takes abasic approach to ahealthy diet.

Its not countingcalories. Im justbeing more aware ofportion sizes andcutting out a lot ofsugars. Ive stoppeddrinking soda altogether, Mike said.

Rich is putting Mike through a rigorous cardio

regimen, complete with running drills in the beachvolleyball pits at Courthouse Athletic and medicine ballsquat/throws, which work his full body.

I want him to keep his heart rate up, but with hisweight I also dont want to overtax his heart either. Wekeep things balanced, Rich explained.

Mike has worked his way up from two days per weekto four days per week or more. He has become morecommitted as he continues on and is determined tocontinue his regimen even after the thirteen weeks is up.

Only a few weeks into the program, Mike has already

lost 15 pounds. And hes gained a lot of confidence.You can see his cheekbones now, and you couldnt

when I met him [6 weeks ago], Richsaid. Plus, his whole confidence levelis through the roof. Hes got bouncein his step. He didnt have thatbefore.

The change in Mikes attitude isalmost as remarkable as the change inhis muscle definition. He smiles moreand walks tall, and his biceps havedefinition that he could not see

before.Im getting such great results,Mike said. Even after the thirteen

weeks are over, theres no way Imgoing to stop.

That kind of excitement anddetermination are exactly what Rich

likes to see. The amazing results Becky and Mike haveachieved are inspiring to the rest of us. They remind usthat no matter what your fitness goal, it is achievable.
