THE PHILATELIC MASTER BEHIND THE STUART HARDY COLLECTION.

In the early 1980s another Australian Philatelic Legend, Ken Baker (100 this year), told me that if ever I was to receive a

well rounded philatelic education I needed to spend time with Mr Stuart Hardy. Ken made the arrangements and thus

commenced many of my philatelic pilgrimages to Adelaide. I would love to have a penny for every cup of tea that the

wonderful Mrs Beryl Hardy made in our day long discussions of all matters stamp related.

Colour, printing errors, varieties and cancellations were produced to advance my education. No collector equals Stuart

in his sublime articulation of the merit of a cancellation upon a stamp. He would express, with passion, the beauty and

aesthetic balance in a “super fine used” stamp.

Stuart wished, when that time came, for his collection to be broken down and auctioned for every collector to have the

opportunity of acquiring one of his many treasures. Be it a $100 specimen or many of the others with values into the

thousands, all coming with the providence of “Ex Stuart Hardy Collection”. Within the 3 auctions in 2012 & 2013

Collectors will see gems come into the market for the first time in many years, items such as;

In the KGV Side Face series there are unique items such as the 1d Red Die 2 No Watermark used, the 5d Perf ‘OS’

block of 4 printed on gum with inverted watermark and the 1d Red Die III Perf ‘OS/NSW’ ‘CA’ monogram block of 6 with

the bottom left unit imperforate at base. Amongst the other super rare items are such items as the 4d Blue Harrison

one-line imprint, the 1d Violet imperforate on 3 sides, the 5d Black-Brown, the 4½d Die II CTO Imprint block of 8, the 1d

Orange-Brown (G78) Perf ‘OS’ Die II, mint block of 4 of the 1918 Cooke Large Multi printing of Rose-Red (G102) with 3

major varieties thereon and such classic varieties as the 4d Violet ‘Line Through Value’.

Amongst the KGV Commemoratives there is a complete sheet of the 5/- Bridge and the ‘unique in private hands’

Imperforate miniature sheet of the 3d blue Kookaburra.

The upcoming Kangaroo & Map auction will include the £2 Small Multi mint block of 24, the 10/-, £1 & £2 1st watermark

‘JBC’ monogram singles handstamped ‘Specimen’, the £2 perf large ‘OS’ used and, Stuart’s favourite stamp, the mint

£1 Chestnut and Blue 3rd watermark perf ‘OS’ which happens to be a sideways watermark. The strength in

representation of varieties in the Roo’s (mint & used) in my view makes this one of the finest collections to come onto

the Australian market in over 50 years.

Stuart collected stamps from age 7 until his departure at 96 in 2011. There are many varieties identified within the

‘Australian Commonwealth Specialist Catalogue’ due to Stuart’s masterful philatelic labour. He was an accomplished

philatelic Judge with service in Australia, New Zealand and Japan. We, as collectors, have all benefited from his love of

the Hobby. Stuart was a proud Life Member of the PS of South Australia and a long time member of the Southern

Districts Philatelic Society

In my view Stuart’s greater strengths lay in his role as a Family Man. He lived and worked through the Great Depression

of the early 20th Century. In his early 20s he studied and became a pharmacist. He served his Country in WW2 in New

Guinea & Borneo rising to the rank of Lieutenant. He loved the Australian outback and nature, tennis, bowls and for

some strange reason supported the Adelaide Crows.

His integrity was flawless and his guidance to many collectors over the years is incalculable. In the world of philately Mr

Stuart Hardy will always be remembered as one of the great Australian empirical researchers in light of his 89 years of

contribution to the hobby. To many he was a ‘Man amongst Men’.

With fond memories and respect on behalf of many.

Michael DRURY.

Stuart Edward Hardy

Stuart Hardy was born just before midnight on the 31st December, 1914,

the second son of Bertha Emma and Henry Edward Hardy.

His early childhood at Victor Harbour, where his parents operated a large

holiday guesthouse, was very happy and gave him an enduring love of

natural places and wildlife.

After the family’s return to Adelaide, times were prosperous, with his

father’s building and land development business doing well. In 1926,

Stuart’s parents took the rare adventure of an overseas trip, visiting

Europe, the Middle East, Asia and America by ship. Stuart’s interest in

postage stamps had begun at the age of 7, and he was keen to collect

the stamps and postcards sent home by his parents from the exotic

places they visited. In later life he maintained an interest in the collection of postcards and correspondence, and

he became a keen traveller too.

Life continued to be comfortable until the sudden collapse of real estate values and rents in the Great

Depression of the late 1920’s undermined his father’s business, and causing the loss of all his properties

including the family home. Stuart was forced to leave school to become an errand-boy at a chemist shop. At the

age of 15 the young Stuart took some powerful lessons from these experiences. He resolved never to borrow

money, and never to be poor again.

Stuart decided that he would study to become a pharmacist. Because of his age, and his lack of a leaving

school qualification, he needed to pass the Pharmacy Board’s strict entrance examination for Adelaide

University. He spent every spare moment in study. Still only 15, Stuart was one of only five to successfully pass

the exam, and he began a Pharmacy apprenticeship in 1930.

Stuart’s father died in 1931. After his death the family was evicted and had to live temporarily with relatives.

Bailiffs took everything of value. To survive, Stuart’s mother rented a large house and filled it with paying

lodgers, providing all meals and laundry.

Stuart excelled during his Pharmacy course, topping the final year. After qualifying, he worked as a pharmacist

until the outbreak of World War Two. He immediately enlisted. After the bombing of Darwin, Stuart was

transferred to Katherine. He was promoted to Lieutenant, responsible for securing and organising all of the

medical supplies for a field hospital. Stuart served in New Guinea and Borneo, where he was part of the ground

force landing at Balikpapan.

On army leave during 1944, Stuart married his girlfriend, Beryl Gardiner after a 7 year romance. During their 54

year marriage, they had four children, Lynette, Christine, John and Kathryn.

After the war, Stuart used his army savings to purchase a run-down chemist shop, which through long hours and

great dedication, he built into a highly successful pharmacy. Most of his customers were pensioners or other

Page 8: Auction 16 - Part 1

people experiencing hard times and he became their friendly and respected adviser. He became the dispenser

for the Hindmarsh Community Hospital and worked closely with the local doctors. He worked in his business

until the age of 68, and never took a day off for any illness.

Stuart was always a keen and active sportsman. As a young man, he played cricket and ran with the Adelaide

Harriers. He played competitive and social tennis for 50 years. He was an avid football follower, attending all

Sturt Football Club matches, and later supporting the Adelaide Crows. At the age of 70, Stuart reluctantly gave

up tennis to take on the challenge of lawn bowls, which he pursued for more than 20 years.

Philately was his constant interest for his entire life. Before the war he had joined the South Australian Philatelic

Society. His pursued this interest even during World War 2, as opportunities arose. One example was a fine

collection of Japanese Occupation Dutch East Indies stamps and letters, assembled at Ambon, purchased with

tins of bully beef.

In the post war years, Stuart continued to build and refine his collection. In 1970 he won his first gold medal at

the Cook Exhibition in Sydney. He again won a gold medal in the National Exhibition in Adelaide. He also

competed and judged at a number of international exhibitions in New Zealand and Japan. Stuart was a proud

life member of, and donor to, the Philatelic Society of South Australia and the Southern Districts Philatelic Society

and he enjoyed the companionship of fellow philatelists who became his life-long friends.

Stuart was respected by everyone as a philatelic authority and he was consulted by many other experts. The

willing and generous sharing of his knowledge about a hobby he loved was always greatly appreciated.

When Stuart retired in 1983 at the age of 68, he and Beryl travelled extensively through Europe, America and

Asia. They were among the first western tourists in China where they attracted lots of attention. Stuart loved the

Australian outback and travelled through many remote places. He drove around Australia twice as well as

journeying twice to Africa, joining camping safaris and staying in game parks.

After the setback of Beryl’s death in 2000, Stuart made the most of his last decade, remaining positive, self-

reliant and sharp witted. He was still putting together lots for club auctions at the age of 94. He passed away

peacefully on April 16th 2011.

Stuart had a long and full life, making the most of his experiences and opportunities. His steadfastness and

determination were forged during his challenging teenage years. He was honourable, knowledgeable,

uncomplaining and quietly proud of his achievements. He had an adventurous spirit, and was courageous,

dutiful and wise. Stuart always had the welfare and best interests of his family and friends at heart. He enjoyed

their love, respect and affection.

The magnificent collection he amassed over many decades is a true legacy of his contribution to the world of

Australian Philately and his desire to share it with as many collectors as possible when he could no longer enjoy

it is a testament to the character of the man.

We, his children, believe that Stuart’s example continues to show us how to lead a full, positive and respectful

life.

He was a fine man.

HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM OUR CATALOGUE[These notes are offered as a guide to understanding the information given as symbols.]

1. Firstly, we have the lot number. If it has a P after the lot number then ithe lots is illustrated in the catalogue. All lots have atleast 1 illustration on our website, and many will have multiple illustrations.

2. The second column contains a symbol, which represents the item(s) in the lot:** Mint, unmounted o.g. * Mint, mounted o.g.V Used, Very fine. F Used, FineG Used, Good H Used, HeavyU Used, quality unspecifiedW Unused, no gum D Piece

* Cover, card or S Stamp (“Postmarks” lots)PS Postal Stationery B Booklets or Booklet Panes

3. The 3rd column contains the general description of the lot and should be self-evident with one exception. When a cataloguevalue is extrapolated the value is followed by a ↕, e.g. $2000↕. Typical extrapolations are 40% of the catalogue value forhinged mint when the catalogue only provides values for MUH, 200% for MUH when the catalogue value is for mint hinged.

The following notes apply specifically to postmark description.

Whenever possible postmarks will be described in full, except that the top portion of a postmark is only spelt out when itdiffers from the post office name or requires some clarification. Bracketed shaded text within a description indicates thatthese characters cannot be read, while greyed characters are hard to read or are only partly present, as is the case whenpart of the postmark is on the edge of a stamp. Very large or small letters are represented by large and small fontsrespectively; small fonts are particularly used to indicate the presence of small nylon wheels in the datestamp. The followingexample illustrates these points:

'[POST] OFFICE/21DE86/GARAH'.

After the forscription of the postmark we will indicate the overall quality of the cancel with a bracketed 2 character code. Thefirst character is A-D where A is a fine clear postmark through to D which is barely legible. The second character is a numberfrom 1 to 4 where 1 is complete including all the frame through to 4 where only 25% or less of the cancel is visible. Forexceptional strikes we will further qualify the quality code with a ‘+’ and for items which are light etc the code will be qualifiedwith a ‘-’.

For postmark lots the condition of the postmark is the most important aspect of our descriptions. Minor defects in the stampor cover are mentioned only when the value of the item is significant. Naturally, major defects will always be described.

4. The symbols in the second column, and the illustrations of lots, form part of the lot description.

5. The last column is the estimate. The reserve is almost always 75% of the estimate and bids below the reserve will notusually be considered.

6. No GST is added to the hammer price. The vendors have accepted responsibility for any tax payable.

7. We use the following standardised abbreviations:o.g. original gum opt(d) overprint(ed)d/s datestamp cds circular datestamph/s handstamp mss manuscript; handwrittenERD earliest recorded date LRD latest recorded dateo/o opened-out RLabel registration labelM/S(s) miniature sheet(s) PPC picture postcardimpt imprint mtd mountedprovl provisional wmk watermarkLDL large dateline (postmarks) SDL small dateline (postmarks)TLC,TRC,LLC,LRC Top Left Cnr, Top Right Cnr, Lower Left Cnr, Lower Right Cnr

How to Get the Most from The Phoenix Website.

While quite a number of our clients make full use of the many benefits our website provides, it is

obvious that most do not. So we are taking this opportunity to reintroduce these benefits to you.

The homepage provides an introduction to the current auction, or highlights of the next auction as

appropriate and there are menus to provide different ways of accessing the auction lots.

Within each auction menu there are six submenus:

1. In Lot Order - this provides you with a lot order index to the auction by section headings. Simply

click on the section and it will take you straight to that part of the catalogue where you can see

each lot in order with its full description and all its images. The estimate and starting price and a

box for your bids are also displayed. Wherever the starting price is displayed it is always exactly up

to date.

2. By Country - this provides a cross reference listing by country. You don’t need to go backwards

and forwards from the index to the catalogue listing anymore.

3. By Topic or Theme - the same as by Country but organised by topic or theme, and there are

hundreds of themes.

4. Description Search - this is used for wild card searching through auction lots. This is very

powerful and to get the most out of it please email us with search requirements so that we can set

it up for you.

5. Image Gallery - this displays every image in lot order. It is a great way to browse an auction.

6. Bulk Bid Entry - this enables you to enter your bids as a batch. So when you have worked out

all your bids you can just enter them on this screen rather than finding each lot and entering them

one at a time.

When you sign on with your Client Code and Password the full benefits are opened up to you.

There are 2 entries at the top of the auction submenues. These are:

By Collecting Interest - this shows all the lots which match your collecting interests.

My Image Gallery - this provides you with just the images for the lots you are interested in.

We ask you for your collecting interest so that we can provide you with these quick and easy ways

to view just those lots that are likely to be of interest to you.

Menus on the top right will vary from person to person and can include any of the following:-

1. My Details - this is where you change your details and preferences

2. My Auction Bidsheet - this is the most important screen we have. It appears the instant you

enter a bid and it allows you to manage all your bids from the one screen. It always shows the

exact status of all your bids.

3. My Auction Vendor Lots - When you are a vendor this screen shows all your lots in this auction

with their current status. You always know exactly the situation with your lots.

4. My Mail Register - this shows you the details of every mailing with dates of mailing, registration

numbers, mailing addresses and which invoices are involved. It also tells you whether just an

invoice was sent or whether your lots were sent as well. Now you don’t need to call us to see if

your lots have been mailed. It is all here for you when you need it.

5. My Invoice Register - this provides the details of every invoice and you can drill down to every

lot on every invoice with their full descriptions and images. You always know exactly what is on

every invoice.

6. My Receipt Register - this provides a list of every consignment we have received from you. It

shows you every lot from each consignment with its full description and images, what auction it was

sold in and if it has not been sold what auction it is in. When you have large consignments spread

over multiple auctions it is just the screen to enable you to keep track of everything.

My Auction 16 Bidsheet.

As we said earlier My Auction 16 Bidsheet is the most important part of the website when you

have placed bids in the auction, because it provides everything you need to manage your bidding.

With this screen you can change your bids, add limits to ensure you don’t overspend, enter Credit

Card details or other special instructions. And it always shows you the current status of your bids.

The lot is highlighted when you have the top bid so it is easy to see the current situation with your

bids.

As well as being able to modify your bids there is a +5% button which increases your bid to 5%

above the current starting price. At the bottom of this webpage there is also a field to globally

increase all your bids by any percentage amount. Very useful when your bids are all way below the

starting price or you want to give yourself that extra level of safety.

The website is there to help you get the most when dealing with Phoenix Auctions. We hope you

take a little time to use it to your advantage. Remember that we are always happy to help if you

have a problem or questions.

Terms and Conditions:These are found on the rear of your printed bidsheet and on the Phoenix website. At this auction

Buyer’s commission is 15% ( plus GST.)
