September 2009 COIN AUCTION-Auction and Mail Bid #7 [email protected] http://georgemanzcoins.com

Welcome to our latest auction, taking place at the Regina Coin Club’s 2009 Fall Show. The auction includes part IV of the Georg Manz Senior Collection (the father of the auctioneer) as well as Part VI of the Roy Miller Collection.

We offer a wide array of lots, from ancient Greek, Roman and Chinese coins to more modern world coins.

American coins include a certified 1888S Morgan silver dollar, as well as a 1900 Quarter Eagle in MS-64.

Canadian decimal coins are once again the strength of the auction, including a large number of hard-to-get varieties.

The 10 cents section includes two rare certified 1875H 10 cents, including one graded VF-30 by CCCS.

The 25 cents section includes a rare 1951 Low Relief graded MS-62 by ICCS.

The silver dollar section is the strongest section in the auction, with almost all coins having a variety mentioned on the certification. The highlight is a 1948 silver dollar with a die rotation and graded MS-60 by ICCS.

Gold coins include an outstandingly beautiful 1918C sovereign (ICCS MS-63), a 1914 $5 (PCGS MS-62), and three different certified Newfoundland $2 gold coins.

Errors include an 1875H 25 cents struck off center with a baseball cap type effect.

Rare tokens include Wellingtons with die rotations and clips, a Blacksmith token, a Devins & Bolton, and a one-of-a-kind 1885 Willow Bunch 50 cents token.

This diverse auction also includes counterstamps, encased coins, a hobo nickel, wooden nickels, a communion token, trade dollars, and commemorative and military medals.

Paper money is led by a rare Hudson’s Bay Company note and a 1935 English Small Seal $20 featuring Princess Elizabeth.

A nice collection of numismatic books, including several authored by legendary Hans Zoell, rounds out the auction.

We hope you will enjoy this catalogue as much as we enjoyed producing it.

Good luck with your bidding.

There is no buyer’s fee in this auction.

196. 1885 Willow Bunch token. C/S on 1797 British Penny. One Known.Counterstamped by Andre Gaudry in 1885 on a British 1797 cartwheel penny, this c/s token says it is worth 50 cents. Willow Bunch is an old Metis settlement southwest of Regina. During the Riel Rebellion, Andre Gaudry and more than 40 other Metis were promised jobs by Lt. Governor Edgar Dewdney to keep them from joining the rebellion at Batoche. The jobs never materialized but it kept Gaudry and others out of the war. Soon after the rebellion ended, Gaudry got the contract to construct the stable for the North West Mounted Police. Struck in 1885, the auctioneer speculates this c/s token was used by Gaudry to pay fellow Metis for their work in constructing the telegraph line. Gaudry is famous for several reasons including accompanying Sitting Bull from the Willow Bunch area to Fort Buford in the Dakota Territory where the chief surrendered to American soldiers; encouraging Edouard Beaupre, the 8-foot 3-inch Willow Bunch Giant, to join the circus business where he was employed by Ringling Brothers as well as Barnum and Bailey, helping to build the telegraph system across part of southern Saskatchewan, and having the contract to deliver mail to Willow Bunch and other areas. None of Gaudry’s tokens exist in the Willow Bunch Museum. Unlisted in any token or coin publication that the auctioneer is aware of. Two extensive articles will be published on this unique token: one in Canadian Coin News; the other in Numismatica Canada in the fall. Host coin in poor condition; counterstamp is EF. Extremely Rare.Minimum Bid $100 ..........................$250.
