Audible Topology: Revealing the Secret of Topological Quantum Matter with Classical Sound

A/Prof Zhang BaileDivision of Physics and Applied

Sciences, NTU

The concept of topology has revolutionized condensed matter physics by opening the door to topological quantum matter such as topological insulators, and its historical significance has been recognized by the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics. On the other hand, the emerging field of “topological acoustics” has shown that it is feasible to make classical sound to exhibit properties similar to the topological quantum matter.

In this talk, I will introduce the fundamental background and discuss how to reveal the secret of topological quantum matter simply with a speaker and a microphone.

Assoc Prof Zhang Baile’s current research interests include electromagnetic wave theory, invisibility cloaking, metamaterials, and acoustics. His works have been highlighted by many scientific magazines and public media. His many awards include the MIT Technology Review's global list of 35 Young Innovators Award in 2012, Singapore National Academy of Science’s Young Scientist Award 2014, IPS World Scientific (Physics Research) Medal and Prize 2016, and Nanyang Research Award (Young Investigator) 2017.
