I am beyond thrilled to be kicking off our Spring Musical Hairspray JR The following packet of information

contains an overview of the show a sample rehearsal schedule character descriptions and other goodies to

help prepare you Script amp Song Excerpts are separate and can be picked up in the R-PMS Choir Room as well

HOW R-PMS MUSICALS WORK ALL R-PMS CHOIR students (1) of (2) performance roles in the show

Baltimore Teen Chorus No audition required All rehearsals take place during the school daychoir hour with

the exception of DressTech rehearsals during show week Chorus members will learn all of the songs

choreography utilize props and help propel the story forward OR

Main Cast Character Students wishing to audition for a specific character role (ie a character that has spoken

lines singing andor dancing solos) must audition for the role Additionally students in the Main Cast must

attend all after-school rehearsals

Please Note Main Cast roles are open to ANY student at RPMShellipnot just students in Choir

If you are a Choir Student but are not cast or choose not to audition as a Main Character you will

automatically participate as a Baltimore Teen Chorus Members This is counted as a

ConcertPerformance Grade for Choir Class

If you are NOT a Choir Student and are not cast as a Main Character you may choose sign up to be a

part of the StageTech CrewVolunteer if desired

AFTER-SCHOOL REHEARSAL ATTENDANCE IF PARTICIPATING IN MAIN CAST (Sample Calendar Attached)

Weeks 1-6 (February 24 ndash April 2nd) Rehearsals are typically Tuesday-Friday from 3-530PM at RPMS

o Mondays are reserved as Flex Days amp for Special Projects Review etc

o There may be days when your character is not called to come in or you may only need to

stay for a portion of the dayrsquos rehearsal A more characterscene specific calendar will be given

out the 1st Week of Rehearsals

After Spring Break Rehearsal lengthen to 67PM and we move to the High School (busing provided)

TechShow Week Rehearsals (April 20th ndash 23rd)

SHOW DATES Friday April 24th 7PM and Saturday April 25th 2PM and 7PM

Main Cast Performers will be expected to attend every rehearsal that their character is called to as the show

will be put together in a short amount of time Students are allowed (2) excused absences (pre-planned

conflicts illness) except for Show Week Please be sure to fill out the Conflict Sheet when you audition

The Performances will be on Friday April 24th (7PM) and Saturday April 25th (2PM amp 7PM) All shows are

required to attend per the Choir Performance Calendar from September and will take place at the R-PHS

HAIRSPRAY- PLOTLINEHISTORICAL CONTEXT Itrsquos 1962 in Baltimore Maryland at the height of the Civil Rights Movement Tracy Turnblad a quirky

teenager with a plus-sized hairdo has a big dream to dance on The Corny Collins Show on national

television Her successful audition transforms her into a local celebrity but she faces discrimination

because of her weight her choice in friends and her hairdo Tracy becomes determined to use her

influence to push for social change and racial integration in the show

With memorable songs such as Good Morning Baltimore and You Canrsquot Stop The Beat the show

continues to be a widely produced musical Its timeless message that everyone should be treated

equally regardless of social cultural and physical differences is as relevant today as it was in the

sixties

Hairspray The Musical is a feel-good comedy and winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical

and Best Score as well as four Laurence Olivier Awards Hairspray was also made into (2) Films and (1)

Live TV Special on NBC

A NOTE ABOUT CASTING The Directing Staff is excited to bring this fun amp timely musical to the stage here in Rocket City It is our

goal to provide high-quality performing arts experiences that not only entertain but convey positive

messages that go beyond the stage in hopes it might truly impacts lives

As we prepare to tell this story within its historical context you will notice that some of the Character

Descriptions specify a certain race or gender We have decided to use the terms ldquoWhite Actorsrdquo andor

ldquoActors of Colorrdquo as well as ldquoMalerdquo andor ldquoFemalerdquo to describe our diverse vision for the Show

It has been common practice to consider any actor for any role in our productions in the past However

in the spirit of preserving the powerful theme of the story we will be considering these factors carefully

as we cast the production We believe that securing strong choices for certain characters is the best

way to honor the messages amp themes of Hairspray We are excited to see what learning opportunities

PART 2 PREPARATION

Look out for the Callback List on Thursday Evening (Email and on the Choir Blog) and plan to stay from 3-6PM on Friday if your name is on it

Even if your name does NOT appear on the Callback list we may have already cast you Please do not assume you are not in the show

You must attend Dance Auditions on Friday from 3-415PM if you hope to be in the show
