Audition Information

If you are auditioning for “ENSEMBLE”, practice the following:

*1. “Go, Go, Go Joseph” (3:24-3:51)

If you are auditioning for a male “LEAD”, practice the following:

2. “Close Every Door” (:54-1:27)

If you are auditioning for a female “LEAD”, practice the following:

3. “Jacob and Sons” (:21-:48)

“There are no small parts, just small actors.” - Konstantin Stanislavsky

*There are only a few “lead” roles, along with a TON of minor roles. Do NOT audition

expecting to be cast as a lead role! Plus, if not cast as a lead you will have a chance to be

featured! Exciting stuff!

* Make sure you read the character breakdown to get a better understanding of each role.

Audition Tips:

Practice, Practice, Practice! Look over your material well in advance and practice each

night. You will feel less nervous if you are prepared.

Do not expect to be cast as a lead. You may have acted before, but the directors are

casting students that they feel fit the roles best. You still are awesome, and we may need

your awesomeness to create an awesome ensemble.

Drink water! Did you know the water you drink today won’t hydrate your body

(especially your vocal chords) until at least the next day? Hint hint: Start now.

Get plenty of rest! You need rest to sing your best and to get your head in the game!

Eye contact. You may not realize it, but if you are looking at the floor or your paper the

whole time we may not be looking at you either. Don’t stare us down, but make us

WANT to watch you. You can even glance up at a spot on the wall above us if you are

nervous. Familiarize yourself with the lines and songs so you are able to look up.

Loosen up. If you don’t look nervous, you look more confident. Feel free to move a bit.

Volume. You may be wonderful, but if we can’t hear you we might think you can’t sing

or act from the script comfortably. Project your voice to the back of the room!

Diction. Spit out those words. Make every single word clear, down to every single letter.

Be yourself- stand out. The directors will see TONS of auditions for multiple days. How

can you make your short song and those few lines from the script pop? Personality!

Do your best. If you know your song and are comfortable reading the lines from the

script, then no worries- relax! You will be fine!

*Please note that everyone

needs to learn this song.

Character breakdown

JOSEPH: Male, (High Tenor, Vocal Range Low A to High G). Eleventh son of Jacob and Jacob’s favorite.

Looking for a strong actor with a confident but charming personality. Must move and sing very well.

NARRATOR: Female range, (Soprano with extended mix/belt range, Low F# to High G). The Narrator is

our host, and through word and song guides the audience gently through the story of Joseph and his

brothers. The narrator must be adept at both being the focal point and then “blending” into the scene.

We are looking for an excellent singer that can completely invest in the storytelling aspect.

PHARAOH: Male range, (Baritone, Low B to High G#). Pharaoh is the most powerful man in Egypt, and

considered a god on earth. He is in a strange psychological place and is desperately searching for the

truth in his dreams. The character is in style an homage to Elvis.

POTIPHAR: Male range, (Baritone, Vocal Range D to B). Potiphar is a rich, self-indulgent and

sophisticated Egyptian capitalist who buys Joseph as a slave. Needs to be a strong actor as well as singer.

MRS. POTIPHAR: Female, Strong Dancer. Mrs. Potiphar is an indulgent woman who likes to get her own

way, and thinks first and foremost about her own personal gratification. Also a part of the ensemble.

JACOB: Male, (Baritone, Low A to C). Jacob is the father of Joseph and his 11 brothers. He clearly favors

Joseph as the first son of his favorite wife, unwittingly causing the friction that exists between Joseph

and his brothers. Jacob needs to be a good actor, who can sing and move reasonably well.

JOSEPH’S 11 BROTHERS: Male roles, can be female.

(Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin), are jealous

of Joseph being their father’s favorite son, sell him into slavery, and ultimately realize their wrongdoing.

We would like to find actors who are skilled dancers and singers.

Specific Brother Roles:

REUBEN: the oldest, the one who is quickest to lie to Jacob.

SIMEON: the brother who is first to openly admit they created their own misery by selling off Joseph.

JUDAH: the first brother who lays down his life for his youngest brother Benjamin.

BENJAMIN: the youngest, most innocent.

BUTLER & BAKER: Male roles can be female, (Tenor). The Butler and the Baker both work for the

Pharaoh. They are both decent men in precarious situations. They need to be good singers and honest

actors. Double as brothers.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE: Will play multiple roles throughout the show including wives to Jacob and his sons

and citizens of Egypt. They sing and dance throughout the entire show. Looking for energetic singers

who move well. Featured roles and solos will come from the ensemble.

CHILDRENS’ CHORUS: Male and Female, sing and dance along with main characters throughout the

show. May double as other roles.

other justified actions will be taken.
