athletics 2012-13 was another great year for Spartan Athletics. We won a team state title in girls hockey, an individual state title for track with Drew DiMaiti, and had two state finalists in football and softball. We also had Catholic Central League North finalists in baseball and golf, as well as having two teams with 20 or more wins: girls basketball with 21 and softball with 20. Have a safe and fun summer and we will see everyone in August for tryouts for fall sports.

ENGINEERING 8/5Campers use syringes and water to test hydraulics, then put those principles to use by creating robotic arms that would pick up an empty water bottle. Every group made a working arm!

TECHNOLOGY 8/6Campers jumped right into programming with LEGO Mindstorms. Students learned how to use parameters and loops to create programs that allowed their robots to draw a square, follow a line, and even race! Thanks to our Raytheon volunteers from St. Joseph’s in Wakefield, Mr. Bett and Mr. Murphy.

SCIENCE 8/7Campers mapped their own ocean floors after learning about theOkeanos Explorer, the only ship whose sole responsibility was learning more about Earth’s largely unknown oceans. The fluid theme carried on into hematology, with campers viewing slides of various types of blood cells. Thanks to alumna Pat Gorton for volunteering with us.

MATH 8/8Students used principles of geometry and pressure to create rockets and test their launching conditions based on the PSI of air pressure and the angle at which they were aimed. Some rockets traveled 150 feet! Thank you to Northeastern RE-SEED volunteers Eric Reid and Stu.

SMH Night with the Navs!

St. Mary’s students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends came together around America’s pastime last night! Despite an intense rain shower after the third inning, Spartan Pride was in full force.

The St. Mary’s Dance Team performed before the game, followed by the first pitch thrown by our own Alison Butler ‘13, Boston Globe Athlete of the Year. Jackie Lavin ‘14 gave a beautiful rendition of God Bless America during the rain delay to keep the team in high spirits.

St. Mary’s alumni enjoyed catering by John’s Roast Beef and an excellent view of the game among friends. Various student groups were recognized during every inning, and all who purchased a St. Mary’s ticket were entered in a raffle to win an iPad. Congrats to Desirae Parker ‘16, the lucky winner of the iPad. She is all set for St. Mary’s Digital Citizenship this fall!

The Navigators wore special pink jerseys in support of cancer awareness programs provided by The Pink Angels. Our own Headmistress Regan wore her #1 jersey and was a part of the silent auction to giveaway the jerseys at the end of the game. Proceeds of the auction benefited The Pink Angels and their programs. St. Mary’s parent Cheryl Matsubara (daughter Athena Matsubara ‘16) is with The Pink Angels; what a great collaboration.

The Navigators have been an excellent partner to St. Mary’s and we are so pleased to have joined them on Sunday in a celebration of Spartan Pride!

CATHOLIC SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAM INITIATIVEGrace Cotter Regan, Head of School; Dr. Mark DiFabio, Assistant Head of School and Principal; and Jade Henne, Marian Division Administrator; participated in a two-day conference at the Wylie Center in Beverly, Mass. St. Mary’s was selected to participate in a year-long initiative with eleven other schools from across the country. The conference focused on mission, data, brand management, academic standards, performance, operational vitality and professional development.

The Roche Center for Catholic Education, a Boston College Program within the Lynch School of Education, created the Catholic School Leadership Team Initiative: Transcending the Challenges. Grounded in the National Catholic Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Schools, the program will engage school leadership, board, faculty and school stakeholders focusing on leading and transforming successful Catholic Schools.

TEACHER TRAVELSMrs. Renzi traveled to Turkey with her husband for the second time.

“When my husband Paul and I left Turkey five years ago, we promised that we would return. Although visiting the ruins of Troy was exciting, walking on the same stone streets that St. Paul walked on in Ephesus and visiting the site where Mary is believed to have lived and died filled us with peace and wonder. The Muslims revere Mary and call her Mother Mary. We traveled along the Silk Road and visited a caravanserai, an architectural masterpiece where merchants and their camels would spend the night in safety. In the region of Cappadocia, 4th and 5th century monks carved dwellings and churches into the rocks. Beautiful frescoes from that time still adorn the walls. The Turkish people are the most friendly and generous we have ever encountered in our ravels. Their smiles and laughter are contagious.”

Are you working on an exciting project, adventuring around the world, or learning something new this summer? We want to hear about it! Email Communications Director Sam Lipscomb ([email protected]) with photos and stories. We will feature them in upcoming Spartan Weekly Updates or other publications!

As part of the Digital Citizenship | School Store communication in early June, there was an announcement regarding the change in the payment process for school fees starting in the 2013–14 school year. With the school store officially closed, all school fees will be paid using the FACTS system. We are communicating with you in advance to ensure that you plan accordingly for the payment of these fees in mid-August to minimize any issues with the fee payment process.

In order to use the FACTS system, you must activate the FACTS account that was set up for you as part of the tuition payment process in mid-June. For those that have already activated your account, thank you! You have already provided FACTS with the payment account information for all payments to St. Mary’s. This information is securely stored in the FACTS system and is not accessed by anyone at St. Mary’s.

If you have not activated your account, please do so immediately. As part of the activation process you provide and authorize FACTS to charge your bank or credit card for payments to St. Mary’s. All payments will be posted to the FACTS systems, so this will be your source to track balances due to the school and payment information.

The steps for the process are as follows:

1. Fees will be loaded into the FACTS system based on your child’s or children’s grade level

2. Payments for fees will be scheduled to be withdrawn from the same account tuition payments are made from using the FACTS system

3. The target date for fee payments is August 15

4. There will be a follow-up process for any payment issues that may be subject to the FACTS payment penalty fee of $30.00 and any additional fees from your bank

The fees that will be withdrawn via FACTS are as follows:

Fee Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8 Grade 9 Grade 10 Grade 11 Grade 12Technology $ 25.00 $ 25.00 $ 25.00 $ 25.00

Fee Definitions

There have been some questions about the communicated fee charges that are being billed and paid via the FACTS system on August 15. Below are brief descriptions for each of the fees to help you understand what they cover. All fees in the past would have been paid for by parents in the school store at the time you purchased your student’s books. There is only one new fee this year (Mobility Fee) and all other fees existed in prior years.

The fee definitions are as follows:

1. Technology Fee (was the Keyboard Fee) This fee existed last year and is to cover all the text books used in Computer Science classes (Grades 6–9).

2. Art Fee This fee existed last year is and is to contribute to the costs of supplies used in Art class (Grades 6, 7 & 10)

3. Senior Art Fee This fee existed last year is and is to contribute to the costs of supplies used by the student in Art class (Grade 12 only). There are a limited number of students taking the class, thus the reason for the higher fee.

4. Testing Fees This is the fee for the standardized testing given in late fall each year.

5. Mobility Fee This is a new fee for the software currently being installed as part of the iPad registration process at St. Mary’s. The software is used for communicating and sharing data between the school and the students via their iPad. This is the first year the fee has been assessed.

6. Science Books To cover the costs of science text books that are not in an e-book format. The fee is for four books, one for each marking period.

7. College Fair Fees charged to offset the transportation costs for juniors to attend college fairs.

8. Yearbook Cost of a yearbook for Marian Division and junior/senior yearbooks. Junior high yearbooks are given to all students, whereas the fee covers the high school yearbook for junior and senior classes.

9. Graduation Fee This fee is to cover the cost of your student’s cap and gown for the graduation ceremony as well as other costs incurred as part of the graduation ceremony.

As we finalize procedures we will continuously post news to STMARYSLYNN.COM. Stay tuned!

ST. MARY'S SUMMER READING FORM

As your teacher for the new school year, I can't wait to get to know you, what you think, and how you feel about

things. One way that will help me learn about you is to find out your personal reactions to what you read.

Using the heading below and the instructions and examples given, complete your double-entry response journals on

loose-leaf paper. You need to keep a journal for each book that you read this summer. You need a minimum of ten

excerpts from each book you read.

These excerpts should span the entire length of the book. They should cover the beginning, middle and end of the

book. Obviously, your personal responses should be the longest part of each entry.

These journals will be collected by the various subject teachers on the first full day of classes. These jOUrnAls

mUsT be hAndwrITTen, nOT TYped! These journals will be your first grade for the new school year in each of the

subject areas.

"A sloop was loitering in the distance, dropping slowly

down with the tide, her sail hanging uselessly against the

mast and as the reflection of the sky gleamed along the

still water, it seemed as if the vessel was suspended in

the air."

FrOm me - how I feel, what I think, what

this shows, etc.

Acceptable

I chose this passage because I could definitely picture

the sloop in my mind. I could see the boat barely moving

in the water as the tide was going out. Also, I love the

author’s choice of words like loitering, this really makes

the sail seem as if it’s just hanging around, the way a flag

hangs off a flagpole when there’s no wind.

Unacceptable

when my family and I go to Cape Cod I love to sit on the

beach and watch the boats go by.
